I was curious how many people here had participated in the Christie's or It's A Wrap Star Trek auctions? I was just watching the History Channel special on the Christie's auctions (which, if you have not seen it, is a must) and recently read that almost 1000 people have purchased lots from the IAW auctions. If you participated, when did you jump in? If not, were there reasons you did not do so beyond the costs of the items?

I was there in New York for the Christie's auction a couple of years ago. The viewing in Rockefeller Center before the actual auction was amazing. Christie's displayed everything like a museum, and you could examine almost everything up close. Very classy. I didn't buy anything, but there were a few things that I wish I could have afforded.

I have a few Trek props in my collection, but I've never been a part of the huge auctions they've had.

Bought one item from IAW off of Ebay. I made the mistake of not asking about shipping cost before winning the item. They charged me $180 for shipping. A friend at UPS told it it cost them under $30 to ship. I'll not buy again.

How did they get away with that??? You'd figure a number of people would be calling them up and complaining if that's a regular practice.

Many of the heavier items, such as set pieces, have hefty shipping costs. The Borg Alcoves (of which there have been several) weigh a few hundred pounds, and the shipping on those must be murder.

This was not that big. It came in a box the size of what you normally receive a micro-tower PC in and weighed less. It was fragil, but I've received china and crystal by UPS before and "fragil" did not up the shipping. They cannot tell me handling cost $150.

One of the guys who was inthat History Channel show is a good friend of mine. I would have loved to be there but the prices on some of those things were too much for me. If I'm lucky I can scrape together a few hundred dollars a year to go to a convention or two. But tens of thousands of dollars, it would be nice but well beyond my means

Most I paid for a prop was 200 bucks. I bought one of those PADD display read outs. It's just a sheet of transparency that looks like a computer display read out. You can actually see it in Insurrection when Picard and Geordi are walking to Main Engineerring to check on Data, they walk by an officer holding a PADD with the display. It has a map of the Briar Patch on it.
Most I paid for a prop was 200 bucks. I bought one of those PADD display read outs. It's just a sheet of transparency that looks like a computer display read out. I think it's funny that what paramount expected to get for the whole auction they got for just the model of the Enterprise. Just shows you how much they underestimate how many fans they realy have

About a year ago, I won a great Andorian costume that was used in ENT's "Proving Ground", and reused, with a new matching cape, in "Terra Prime".

A few weeks later, I won an elaborate Tellarite costume (ENT's "Babel One") that included the fatsuit (ENT's "Divergence" and "In a Mirror Darkly, Part I"). Plus, the same week, a ST: TMP leisure shirt from Epsilon 9.

A few months ago, I scored a ST VI Federation blue sash from the Khitomer talks.
Have been very happy with everything from IAW. My only mistake was combining the Tellarite and TMP costumes into one parcel, as the combined amount went over $AU 1000 and I was hit with Australian Customs duty, and GST, and a processing fee as i'd now become an "importer". had they been in separate weeks, they'd have arrived through regular mail.

I bought a couple of items from It's A Wrap. The only thing I didn't like was the almost 2 month wait after the auction was over before they shipped anything, and the excesive shipping costs.

^^^^This was a very common complaint. They got terrible feedback on EBay and actually cleaned up their act after a while. Now they usually ship in a week or so, but they really had to learn about customer service the hard way.

I participated. Registered. Had $9,000 ready. Was on-line. Even bid a few times. Did not get a damn thing. The IAW stuff was either too junky, or, I missed the stuff I really wanted. They had 4 of those square glasses that where originally candle holders turned upside down, the ones they used all 7 years and Sisko used in "Pale Moonlight" that went for $180. I'd give $150 for just 2 of them right now.

I participated in the Christies auction. I bought Avery Brooks' Sisko red and black uniform, Seasons 1-5. It's a great display piece, on a mannequin that I got free through a friend. When going, I knew I wanted to come away with something that just says 'TREK' when you see it, and this fit the bill. Of the 5 captains, I believe I got the uniform for the least amount, so that makes the cost a bit easier to swallow. I had the cash and didn't need it to survive, and had worked for Paramount for over 12 years and felt like I should have something to remember that time.
It was a fun and exciting experience, and now when I watch Avery during any episode of DS9 from those years, I can say 'I Have That!' and look across the room and admire it and share the fun with friends and family.
