Something at Comic-Con - This rocks

Paramount Pictures will not be putting on any panels or bringing any stars to Comic-Con this year. They may do some viral stuff. But their big titles G.I. Joe, Star Trek, Transformers 2 and The Last Airbender won't be out til 2009. Last year Paramount kicked off Iron Man at the Con, which played big there. "The timing was off this year," said one Paramount spokesman.

UPDATE: Paramount spokesman Mike Vollman just called me to say: "We have a vibrant and exciting schedule of activities planned for Comic-Con." The studio will be unveiling a number of marketing materials on these pics.

Re: Nothing at Comic-Con - This sucks

Not a complete surprise, I suppose, given the long lead-time remaining, but still...

No longer than the lead time for "Iron Man."

I imagine this translates into "we don't have anything to show that we think would produce a real positive buzz."

Re: Nothing at Comic-Con - This sucks

This is a huge misstep for the studio. Doing something at Con the year before a major movie comes out always generates a grass-roots buzz. By next year, Star Trek will have been out in the theaters for a couple of months, what the hell would be the point of a panel then? It won't help the ticket sales and it won't generate any buzz. It's like foreplay after you've climaxed.

Sam you need to get your own stall.

With Sombreros on it. Possibly a Pez dispenser.

I don't know...I would have been satisfied with a panel of Abrams, Kurtzman, Orci, Scott Chambliss, and maybe an actor -- Bana, Pine, or Urban this time -- and all they would've needed to bring with them were some production stills showing some sets, a better shot of the Enterprise, and stills of some actors in uniform. I'm sure they have those materials ready to be viewed...or maybe that is more than Abrams wants to reveal.

You know, I wonder if Abrams decided he wasn't going to show us anything.

Maybe they're not comfortable with the expected fan reaction to those elements, outside of the context of a very finished film presentation.

That's a shame. I was looking forward to getting some juicy info. I wonder how long longer it'll be before we actually get something substantial?

There is a certain amount of stuff floating around out there that's been effectively suppressed by Paramount or is being withheld by various entities out of concern at being "shut out" of official press participation in Trek events sponsored by Paramount (jfxonline alluded to this a while ago). Expect the self-imposed embargo on that kind of thing to disintegrate in the next two to three months - one entity will start reporting, and then the deluge.

Re: Nothing at Comic-Con - This sucks

Transformers and Cloverfield were promoted long before they came out. Even Indiana Jones. What's the deal Paramount.

Re: Nothing at Comic-Con - This sucks

Oh whatever. Even if there was a panel it would just consist of Abrams and Orci going on about how "big" and "epic" the movie is and how it's not quite a prequel, not quite a reboot, but a combination of the two and not even being similar to the two. You know, the same things they've been saying for the past two years we've known about this movie.

Fuck sakes, I just want some info about this movie. Even fake info is better than the no info we currently have. That would give us something to talk about. Due to the lack of info, everyone has resorted to photoshopping sombreros into pictures, but they'll soon grow bored of that. What then?
