GET SMART - Discussion and SPOILERS

Saw the Agent 23 thing coming pretty early on.

Though I did get a kick out of him snatching the $18M spy-fly out of the air and crushing it.

Knew Hymie the second he came in, though I didn't recognize Bill Murray's cameo right away.

Saw it Friday. It was not a perfect movie by any stretch of the imagination. It was, however, a lot of fun. It did make me decide to get off the fence and finally make an investment in the complete series from Time-Life.

Do remember right that in the series Hymie was an "evil" robot/a villan's robot that was converted to work for CONTROL and that Max and Sigfried were (more or less) on friendlier terms?

I saw it with my wife, who has never seen the original, and we both loved it. I was very pleasantly surprised - given the reviews, I had fairly low expectations, but I thought it really nailed the spirit of the original. The packed theater I was in seemed to really like it - people were roaring with laughter at the gags, and the crowd seemed pretty happy with it when the movie was over.

One thing struck me, though - was there a love scene between Max and 99 (when they were in Russia) that was left on the cutting room floor? He shows up at her hotel room in the morning with a rose and breakfast, and there was a line about "last night" and to me it suggested that they had spent the night together. Or maybe I just missed something ...

I think it was more of an emotional connection between the two than an actual consummation.

Gotta save SOMETHING for the sequel. ;)

You're right about Hymie. As for Max and Siegfried, they were hardly friendly. They were mortal enemies and intense rivals.

I think he was just trying to be charming with breakfast. And I'm pretty sure the "last night" line referred to her confession about why she had to get a new face, with the joke that 23 assumed the same thing you did when he heard Max say it.

Well, in 99's flashback there's one of Max entering his room, something we didn't see. Seems to me something was cut there and 99 never rebuffed or reacted to comments 23 made re:them having sex. I took it to mean they did share a night together.

And, Christopher, I thought I recalled Max and Sigfried having a respect for one another, maybe not a friendship, but I think I recall Max inviting him to his and 99's wedding and was disapointed when Sigfried declined.

Season 5 showed a LOT of diceyness in the integrity of the characters (such as it was)...due, in no small part I suppose, to the fact of Feldon's pregnancy it was written around.

Saw the movie Tuesday. It was fun. Nothing great. Though I don't think a comedy's made me laugh as hard as There's Something About Mary, so it's been a while (the American Pie trilogy had its moments though).

Never seen Get Smart before, so were none of the photos (99 had a framed photo of... her mother?) "cameos"?

Also, I think that might be the first time I've seen Anne Hathaway on the big screen. Though I thought she was hot as hell (as a minor?) when she made her acting debut with "Get Real."

I liked it a whole hell of a lot more than I expected to. Definitely worth a second viewing. I loved the sequence toward the end where Max drives all three of the original Smart cars, finally getting bitched out by Bernie Kopell. Awesome.

I have to say I remmember it like Trekker, that they were more "cordial" or whatever you want to call it. Enemies yes, but it definitely had a more friendly air about it.

One other thing about this movie that didn't paly quite right for me was the relationship between Max and Chief. In the original series, Max was much more of a pain in the ass for the Chief, and you could see the Chief being a lot more irritated with Max. With the movie, it was almost a more fatherly-son relationship. I'm not saying it didn't work, it was just a little different.

I liked it, but going in I wanted to like it more than I did. Smiles, some laughs, and I was definitely not bored, so I still recommend it and I still like it, but I thought I was going to see something I liked even more than this for some reason.

I knew this movie had layered nods that I just didn't know about. I knew the one car from the museum but didn't realize they paid tribute with 2 other vehicles as well.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the cameo by Bill Murray as the agent in the tree. The guy barely comes out of his self-induced exile.

I thought it was a very entertaining comedy. They're rare and seldom that I actually enjoy one, but Steve Carrell is very likable and the supporting cast is great too. I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel.

I mentioned the Agent 13 cameo upthread (and pointed out I didn't realize it was Murray until the credits...see post #101 to be specific).

He's got BIG personal problems involving drugs, alcohol, sex addiction, and a pending divorce as a result, apparently. Too bad. :(

That was fantastic! I also loved Patrick Warburton as Himey. Classic!

NO NO NO NO NO! This movie was just fine as it was. One of the things I said to my friends as we were walking out of the theater was that it was nice that unlike most movies (especially remade/updated/reimagined franchise films), they didn't try to plant seeds or leave things open for a sequel. Much as I loved it, I'd like it a whole lot better on its own.

Well, as an analyst Max maybe worked out well for Chief. Maybe as an Agent Max gets more and more on the Chief's nerves. ;)

I actually liked that they didn't play up the old Adams/Platt relationship. It wold have been derivative. The more fatherly place the Chief had in regard to Max was much more refreshing and led to a pleasing resolution toward the climax of the film.

Post-It notes early in the film included: "Final Exam: 8th Time Today" and, on the empty goldfish bowl, "Buy new goldfish". ;)
