Auberjonois la clunker

I love Rene, probably one of the best TREK actors of all time...but I was looking at his IMDB write up? Talk about a clunkers...not only did he do the Hindenberg, then he does King Kong..yikes..

But give him is props...the dude has done a lot of voice over work, and pretty cool how he played Dasaad on the old Super Powers cartoon and then played him again on the newer JLA and JLU cartoons...

Sometimes great actors mostly only get crap work. Just look at Louise Fletcher. She won an Oscar and other than the role she won the Oscar for, her only other good role was her DS9 role as Kai Winn.

Rene is definitely one of the very best actors there is. On the DS9 DVD extras he talks about being proud that when they write his obituary, it will say that he played Odo. Which is a wonderful character that people are going to enjoy for many decades after he's gone. And he said he's glad that because of Odo he will be remembered for something other than his Benson role (which seems to be him agreeing with you that he had a lot of clunker roles ).

There was an old interview with Armin Shimerman where he talks about sometimes in life, a great actor won't get good roles just because that's just how life goes. And they need to take crap roles if nothing else is there. Here's the link to Armin's comments about that that:

His role on Boston Legal was great, but I lost track of that show a while ago and heard he's not even on it anymore.

He, like any other jobbing actor, takes the work he can get. As long as he turns up, does his job well like a professional and gets paid for it, nothing else about the production is his fault.

I could actually imagine Rene looking back quite fondly at the time when in his young years he became part of an all star ensemble cast for the production of "The Hindenburg". And while it is not given much credit by the critics, the film was received quite well and I still like to watch it once in a while. I would recommend it to all those that have not seen it - whoever likes Trek should get something out of it. It is certainly one of the most accurate films of the aerospace genre - not counting the basic assumption of the fire resulting from a bomb, of course.

Oh, I agree..I actually liked King Kong 76 better than the Jackson version...but both movies, Kong and Hindenberg, were clunkers at the box office...

And I agree..we will look back fondly at his work. No one can claim to have a stellar record at always getting choice material; i.e. Hell's Rain

Of all the DVD sets I own and watch regularly, not an inconsiderable collection, Odo is my wife's number one favorite character. I hope she never meets Rene or I'm in trouble. But I wouldn't blame her, he's stellar.

Talk about a clunkers...not only did he do the Hindenberg, then he does King Kong.

I don't recall "The Hindenberg" being "a clunker" - it was the era of the disaster flick, and they were popular, ensemble pieces

When "King Kong" was being remade in 1976, it would have been a highly sought-after gig. Jessica Lange got a lot of mileage out of it for a long time.

Rene has always been very philosophical about his acting career. When he got the Odo role, as noted above, he was thrilled he'd be remembered for something other than "Benson" AND he could now afford to send his kids to decent universities. Great actor and gentleman!

Rene had a bit part in the original M*A*S*H movie as Father Mulchay. He is still a very good actor and a nice guy in person.

Rene is not what one would call a romantic lead or anything like that, so you can't expect him to be in all great movies. There are many actors in Hollywood, and the fact that he's been on some great TV shows (DS9, Boston Legal, plus smaller roles on ENT and I believe Stargate), plus some decent movies in his past is a sign of success.

Even the best and highest box-office actors in Hollywood are in the occasional clunker. Shoot, even Humphrey Bogart, who is fairly routinely voted the most popular actor who ever lived, was in a few terrible movies. I mean, has anyone here besides me ever seen Swing Your Lady? I mean, that movie SERIOUSLY sucked!

Rene actually was nominated for two emmys for Benson and The Practice. Hardly what I would call crap work.

Isn't he more of a theater actor? Did he have any notable stage roles?

I have had the chance to see Rene several times on Broadway. Before I was born he was the villain in Coco starring Katherine Hepburn and he sings a song called Fiasco which is quite amusing and he has such great energy. He was also in Big River (Tony nomination, I think) and City of Angels on Broadway. I got the chance to see him as the Van Helsing-esque character in "Dance of The Vampires" opposite Michael Crawford in a musical where his number, Logic was a speedy patter song that only his level of skill and agility could pull off. Really brilliant.

More recently he was in "Sly Fox" with Richard Dreyfuss. As much as I think Dreyfuss is amusing, I was so lucky to see a performance with Auberjonois in the lead role because Dreyfuss was ill.

Rene is a really nice guy though he keeps to himself and maintains a low profile.

I think he's a very good actor. Definitely one of the highlights of DS9's cast. And in the end, that's all that matters. Good actors can be in bad films, TV and vice versa, but regardless of resume a good actor on a good TV show is a good thing. :)

Because he's done theatre is one of the reasons why he's so amazing, just like most of the rest of the cast and secondary cast of DS9 who have also done theatre and are likewise amazing.

I think Rene is known as a 'character actor'. He calls himself a character actor on the DS9 DVD extras and says he is a shapeshifer just like Odo because character actors are shapeshifters. No doubt the 'character actor' stigma played a factor in what roles he got. Kind of funny that Rene's acting talents dwarfs that of most 'lead actors' by a huge margin, as do DS9's other 'character actors' with theatre experience.
