What did Die Hard and Indiana Jones revamps have that STXI might not?

[NOTE: INDY 4 SPOILERS MAY BE FOUND IN THIS THREAD]

I've come to notice something.

Both Die Hard and Indiana Jones movies of this decade are revamps of previously exhausted movie franchises from 'back in the day'. Not so dissimilar from J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movie.

A pattern I've noticed that might be studio driven is that both Indy and Die Hard wrote in vehicles for contemporary youthful actors most definitely to attract the younger audience of today. Justin Long and Shia LeBouf are two such actors. While not huge actors, they've definitely succeeded in making their respective older franchises a lot more entertaining for younger viewers who may not have been around for the earlier movies but can enjoy the movie more by identifying with young actors they know from other films. (By young, I'm talking mostly my generation, the 16-24 year old crowd.)

My question is this: Would this be a wise move for Star Trek to take? I'd say this film falls into the same category as the Die Hard and Indy of this era. The only actor similar to either Justin Long or Shia LeBouf I see cast so far is John Cho... and then again, I doubt that part was written as a deliberate vehicle to seat a younger audience in the theaters. It seemed like something they realized they could do after the script was locked and they began casting.

Thoughts on this? I doubt it ultimately matters to the quality of film we get, but does anyone think the studios and writers should have included a vehicle for a well known contemporary youth actor?

I don't see the point of this. We're already going to get younger actors in this movie, right? Yelchin is 19 or 20 I believe.

The one thing Die Hard and Indiana Jones had that Trek XI lacks is a decade long break (longer actually). Both films were gone long enough that people still remembered the franchises yet at the same time were not tired of the franchise since had been many years since a new one came out. Plus those films got to cash in on people like me, someone born in 87 and remembers the Die Hard and Indy movies from when they were a kid yet never got to see them in theaters. At the same time they get the older crowd who saw those movies in the theaters yet had not seen one in a long time.

I guess what I am getting at is that Trek has not had a long enough rest to be compared to movies like Die Hard and Indy

Star Trek has a foot in both camps with Nimoy and a younger cast to carry it on, should the finances end up well in the black. You forgot to mention other rewarmed franchises like Rocky Balboa and John Rambo. Although like Die Hard, you can argue that they can't really continue without the main star. I've not seen Indy IV yet, so can't really speak for that one.

I found both the later Die hard and Indy movies seemed to lack when compared to their earlier versions. I will only really comment on Indy IV because I am a big fan of the series. In a nut shell Indy did not have a great script.
The middle of the movie seemed to drag. What should of been about 10 min of screen time ended up being about a half hour.
As for the new Trek movie I pray JJ has gotten some great writers. With a good story and acting he may breath life into trek once more. With out it he may be putting the nail in its coffin.

"What did Die Hard and Indiana Jones revamps have that STXI might not?"

Old people as the stars.

Hey...they should put the SHAT in there! That would make the movie more SHATtastic!

The best way to ruin a good thing is to try to change it to suit a target audience. Some movies are remembered because they have certain actors in them; those are the lame productions that don't have enough plot to sustain themselves.

I think that Chris Pine will fill that type of role nicely. I have a feeling we'll be pleasantly surprised by him as Kirk.

Star Trek has a lot more thematic substance than either Indy or certainly Die Hard, which is nothing more than a collection of one liners and stunts.

Old people as the stars.

I read that "People as old as the stars."

Live Free or Die Hard and Indy 4 were not remakes nor were they revamping. They were continuing the story of their main characters. Neither actor in either series was re-cast with a younger person. They didn't go back to the origins of these characters to start "fresh". The formula for the new Trek is just the opposite. The entire crew will be the "bridge" or "vehicle" for the younger audiences, if there will be one. They are gonna look like a bunch of kids compared to what we are used to. Nimoy will be good to balance things out.

Star Trek...

HANNAH MONTANA!!!

Re: What did Die Hard and Indiana Jones revamps have that STXI might n

Aging actors from the previous incarna...*remembers Leonard Nimoy* never mind...

Smaller fanbases with less continuity obsessed people, base franchises with no spin off's and television runs to worry about. Simpler movie series with a different type of fanbase really.

Star Trek has an awful lot more to contend with by way of its audience, and giving it self enough of a separate identity from its own franchise instead of being a direct continuation.

Eww...don't even suggest that jokingly! Sadly, it would probably attract a lot of the tween/teenage girls demographic.
