Did anyone else dislike Riker?

Gul Bones

I'm not sure sometimes I don't mind him, while other times I feel he's a humourless a*****. Don't get me wrong I enjoy him as a character but I feel that he takes himself far too seriously when he isn't exaxtly the most professional officer around.

Just something about him rubs me the wrong way.

Your thoughts on Riker?

He was my second favourite character next to Data, so no I didn't dislike him.

I can't find it anymore, but a while ago I wrote a long post about why Riker shouldn't be judged in a 21st century context. He's clearly a man of the 24th century. 21st century viewers judge him for the number of short relationships he had on the show, while I have continually pointed out that many of those were initiated by the woman.

I don't think of him as unprofessional. There's a clear line between "Commander Riker" and "Will". Everyone clearly likes him but they respect him too.

I always rather liked Cmdr. Riker. He didn't take himself as seriously as a lot of the other characters on the show, but he also did an excellent job in command. He also had no problem making difficult command decisions quickly and effectively. But, in the end, he and Picard worked best when they were able to operate as a team. Riker didn't have the same skills Picard had as a diplomat, but I seriously doubt Picard would ever be the one to swindle Quark in order to get information.

I didn't dislike him, but he wasn't my favourite either. I found him rather moody and short tempered - not an attractive feature imo. He was a good commander, and never neglected his duties, or underperform.

Not me. I rather liked Riker. Sure, he was stuck up on occasion; but never particularly unpleasant. And he did have a great sense of humour.

Obviously I like Riker. I've read a lot of stuff about him over the years and the criticism of him seems evenly split - that he takes himself too seriously; that he doesn't act seriously enough. I can see why folks could have a downer on him. But he seems pretty popular around here, and that's something that I like. :)

I didn't like him at first - too much of a stuffed shirt most of the time. Later, when the writers/producers developed him more, he became one of my favorites. Same with Picard - too wooden at first, lots of shouting, etc. Both became much deeper characters by the second season. Picard became even moreso after BOBW. It was because of their evolution from fair-to-great roles that I had hoped Archer and T'Pol would improve on ENT, but...

My wife has been in love with Riker from season 2 on - didn't like the clean-shaven look (I am clean-shaven.....hmmm...).

Me? I thought he was an excellent character (sense of humor but tough when necessary) and enjoyed Frakes portrayal a ton. What I didn't enjoy was the ton of weight he put on in season five and the struggle he seemed to have with it all the way through Nemesis. He really let himself go, not unlike the Shat, which is interesting, as Riker was originally modeled on Kirk.

Riker is also my favourite TNG character.

But I have seen a lot of hate for him. His character was shafted by the writers on more than one occasion, like when the Ferengi took over the ship in 'Rascals' and when the Enterprise-D was mortally wounded by a 20 year old Klingon Bird of Prey in Generations. Damaging to anyone's reputation.

People often use those two reasons when criticizing him.

I never disliked Riker but I did find him a bit uptight when I started to watch the show.

But during the run of the show, the character did grow on me. I began to appreciate him more and more and he became one of my favorites.

I liked him, purely for the way he practically mounts Data's console with that huge strapping leg, usually during a serious consultation with the android.

It screamed "MAN"!

;)

I never liked him much but I can't really pin down why. I guess he just... I dunno, really. I just didn't care for him.

Riker was quite possibly my favorite TNG character. I'd have loved to see him as a permanent ship captain (as opposed to BOBW or as "acting captain" when Picard wasn't around). What I wouldn't give for a Star Trek: Titan TV show...

^^
yes, I would love to see Titan too, even if I would miss having Picard in charge.

I would probably miss the other TNG main characters as well but at least we would have a series with one of them.

Riker was probably my favorite character in TNG (as well as my first crush :)). I didn't like him during the first season, but he grew on me as the series went on and I did love his sense of humor.
