How do you forget you're carrying a gun?

To play devil's advocate, you can forget there's supposed to be something wrong with carrying a gun. The man's a former cop, he probably gives no more thought to the gun he's carrying than to the tie he's wearing.

Why is that playing devil's advocate? I have a loaded gun with 13 rounds on my right hip, and 2 mags with 24 rounds on my left hip.

I FAIL to see what's wrong with that!

Nothing wrong with that at all. You could kill (sorry, neutralise) a good 37 people with all of that.

I read the post you linked to, and it was insightful as to having weapons for home protection. As much as I don't agree, I understand the reasoning behind it.

But outside your home, carrying around more bullets than some police officers? What exactly are you expecting to encounter on your way to the shops?

I carry when I'm off duty, I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

to all those who live in countries with good gun control I'm happy for you, but here in the U.S. Guns r everywhere and the bad guys have no problem using them. Just the other day 2 men rob a Bank of America and pistol whipped a pregant women who didn't move fast enough for them

no I do not. I'm a deputy sheriff and I have seen my share of gun related deaths. I have seen to many people who have been robbed at gun point. But hay if you believe that then that's cool and I hope you go to your grave never having to expriance a gun crime commited against you or your loved ones

Most of us didn't have it so easy or so safe. And we count just as much as you do, as much as you'd like to write off those of us who weren't to the manor born (a reference to wealth only, of course. Breeding is another matter entirely).

I have been here the same amount of time, and I have seen them used. From walking out of a local bowling alley, I walked unknowingly into an armed stand-off between some armed criminals and the police years ago. As I assessed the situation (my mind was in WTF? mode), I followed the police officer's instructions to stop and show my hands as he had me dead in his sights. Another time, I was at my sister's house visiting with my favorite aunt, her son/my cousin and his daughter we all watched a couple of gang-bangers chase each other down the block with guns blazing. I even had a cop pull a gun on me once when I was closing up the shop after working late alone. Luckily, I had my DL and my business cards showing that I was a manager employed to work there. And none of these experiences even bring up the friends or co-workers that I know that own and carry. (my favorite of them being a .357 Magnum Desert Eagle. A big gun that fit so perfectly in my big hands.) So I do not see the exaggeration that Paxil does.

On a more humorous note, this thread's title had the final sequence of Get Shorty flashing to my mind's eye. You know the scene, where Farina gets busted at LAX just before he gets replaced by Harvey Keitel.

I live in one of the most densely populated multicultural areas of the US and I've never seen a gun used on the street or felt the need to be fearful of such things.

The fact that Immolatus is a deputy sheriff already makes his views bias to that of the rest of the population.

It seemed like an honest mistake to me. Detain the guy, check out his records and if it is obvious he had no ill intent, then fine the guy and send him on his merry.

My parents' apartment was burglarized repeatedly - once while they were sleeping there. I've seen people shot down right in front of me. I've been beaten by gangs and slashed with a knife. And you never forget the first time a knife is held to your throat.
This isn't a "pity-me" story. This is a typical childhood for a kid in the drug capitol of the United States. I'm very glad, my friend, that you didn't have a similar experience, but remember, this all took place just a few miles away from you.

I feel the need to ask but were these crimes due to race?

I ask because I'm aware of your race as well as your faith as well as being aware that in certain parts of this area neither is warmly accepted.

Basically what I'm asking is, could those crimes be biased ones?
