passing down TREK

I am fifty years old. And I have children of my own, plus nieces and nephews as well. I have always endeavored to pass TREK on to the younger generations. Generally by starting with TOS, but even with the modern treks, mainly TNG and DS9.

Two of my nephews, now adults, and one niece really took to TREK. My own four year old son is taking to it very well (despite occasional hickups with Star Wars)...

What methods do you use to try and get your 'next generation' into Trek? Or are you reactive instead of proactive?

Honestly? I really have more important things to worry about in life than whether my kids watch the same sci-fi shows as I do. If they want to watch what I'm watching and like it, that's great. If they don't like it, oh well, its not the end of the world.

True. But my uncle got me into STAR TREK when I was a kid. If he hadnt it might have been years later, so i am glad he did. And I certainly don't want them, as young kids, watching sub-standard shows if I can help it!!! Have I polluted their minds with scifi and comic books, as their moms think I have?? OH YEAH!!!

I think it's only natural to get your kids involved in things that you are interested in - I see families at cons, and outside of Trek, I see families enjoying activities together that one or both of the parents are interested in. So far this week I've seen parents and children sharing scuba diving and bodyboarding. I haven't really had the opportunity to pass Trek on to another generation but had I had the opportunity when I was really active in fandom then I would probably have done so.

Good to hear that, and I totally agree about families at Trek conventions. I havent been to one in some time, and my kids want to go, so we are looking into it.

This weekend we are going to the Grand Canyon and we may actually stop over in Vegas to visit the Star Trek experience.

My 2 year old drops whatever he is doing to stare at the TV when the Enterprise theme plays. When they showed "Through a Mirror, Darkly" not too long ago he got all bent, pointing at the screen and saying, "Daddy, daddy, NO!" while the altered opening sequence ran. I've been watching re-runs of TOS lately and he walked up and pointed at a certain green-blooded friend of ours and said "Pok!" I don't think passing it along will be a battle, know what I mean?

Well, my kid doesn't watch any TV at all; she has wanted to look at the Ships of the Line book with me, so she knows what a starship is, but that's it so far. I'm sure not going to push it on her; if she's interested I'll be happy to indoctrinate her!

Forbid them to watch it. Say it's too adult for them. It's not kid stuff.

Just kidding. Seriously, put them in a Skinner box with a toy phaser, a tricorder and spock ears, and only drop in food pellets when they can figure out the difference
between a coaxial warp bubble and a spatial flexure.

Thank you, Dr. Spock!

I don't have any kids yet, but when I do I fully intend to take them to conventions with me and make them watch episodes with me

If I have kids then no, I won't make them watch Trek. If when they grow up they become interested in Scifi and find their way to Trek because its something they want to watch of their own accord, fine.

I don't have kids, but if I do, I won't push them to watch with me. If they become interested in Sci Fi/Trek when they get older, then I'll be happy to introduce them to it.

I don't have kids either but I plan to try and convert some co-workers and friends with the newest movie. I'm hoping JJ makes the trailers look good enough that I can rope some people in and then they'll get hooked.

I've also been trying to get my girlfriend into it. She'll watch it with me but I don't think she'd ever watch it when I wasn't around.

On the flipside, when I was growing up I watched so much Trek that my casually viewing parents and brother have sworn to never watch it again. :(

Oh, you are so right Mr. Nuts, you can not force them to watch anything. But when you have kids, and I hope you do someday because they are a kick, they tend to like to watch things you watch since, lets face it, you pretty ,much will watch tv while giving them bottles and just chilling while they play with toys.

Yup. That's how it goes...

Both my kids have seen Star Trek, but alas, they are not as into it as I would like them to be. And that is fine. I am hoping that when they get older they will have a better appreciation for it for having been introduced to it early on in life.

I'm gonna wait till I see how it goes with Trek XI. Because ENT sorta blew my credibility there for a while...

However, I have a nephew who recommended I watch Weeds. However, as it turns out, Weeds sucks. So he owes me. :rommie:

I wouldn't ever try to tell my kids what to watch. My parents both hate Trek...I got into it through my older brother, when I went through that phase around age 10 where I wanted to be just like him and do everything he did. Other shows I might not have discovered otherwise I found through my parents, just because my dad would be watching reruns all the time and now and then I sat and watched with him.

If my kids were to get into Trek, I think that's how it would go: if I were watching it one day, and they chose to come and sit with me. If they enjoy it, then great, we have something to talk about. If not, then oh well. *shrug*

This is, of course, all hinging on me hypothetically having children one day. :p
