Okay--how did they survive Smokey? I thought they were getting pretty ripped, instead it's only ONE GUY who's hurt. Seriously hurt maybe, but still alive.

How'd that happen?

To tell the truth, I was SO rooting for Smokey on that one.

I was quite taken aback by that too.

Everyone else's encounters with ole' Smokey have been pretty fatal (excluding Eko and Locke), and what with the Mercs actually killing Alex, I thought Ben would have gotten it to strike them down with some great vengence and furious anger!

It's killed plenty of other people for far less than what the freighter guys did. But no... they get to live. Any theories?

Well these guys obviously know enough about Ben and the Island from their employer Widmore to be at least prepared for Ole Smokey, and use some sort of device to minimize it's effects I think, not stop it, just slow down.

Real world theory is that if all the soldiers are dead then the conflict of the freighter being a danger is gone already.

Lost theory is that maybe Ben can't completely control Ol Smokey. Perhaps it is attacking them under protest because Ben's forcing it to?
