CNN article

Since I like TOS, but am not obsessed with it, I will probably like his movie.

If he were "reimagining" TNG, the moment he "reimagined" the Enterprise D, or Data, at that moment I'd probably give up on it. Unless he made them "better" (which to me means, make the AGT Enterprise the regular Enterprise, and make Data have more heroic qualities)

I guess I do have some fanboi qualities lolb

The sad truth is, this shows how unqualified he is to address Trek...

As qualified as DC Fontana, Gene Coon, Harve Bennett, Nicholas Meyer, Rick Berman and Michael Piller when they came to ST.

They weren't born ST fans, and each brought with them a new angle on things - and none of them tried to discover what it was that "the fans" really wanted to see. Because "the fans" are not monolithic in their thinking, and cannot be pleased en masse. Hopefully, though, a new ST project can appeal to enough general public to create an "en masse" demographic for a ST film.

Whether that group happens to contain some diehard ST fans is immaterial, although their positive word-of-mouth (ie. ST IV, "First Contact") is always useful.

WHO can understand us ?

We're like the wind baby !

J.J. seems to understand there's no way in gods green earth to please every last one of us.

Case in point....

When it was announced that this would be a TOS era film the TNG / DS9 / VOY/ ENT fans threw a fit saying "GO FORWARD NOT BACKWARDS...."

Then....

William Shatner "I'm not in it"

Shatner Fans "WELL, if he's not in it we're not going to see it"

And on and on and on.

Conclusion....

We can't all be pleased, period !

Well, it's not true that we can't all be pleased... at least 99% of us. What's more true, I think, is that NONE of us will be pleased if all of us get what we want.

Most of the folks who'll pitch a fit about the things you mention, above, would probably be pretty unhappy with the final result if they got everything that they think that they want, don'cha think?

Ultimately, I think that they'll be happier if they get a good story that happens to fit fairly closely into the "trek" that they know, while I think all of them would be unhappy if 70-year-old Shatner was trying to revisit his youth on-screen or if this was set in the 200-gazillionth century on the Enterprise-XXX.

Well, if it's THAT Enterprise, the film may gain a whole new audience, though. ;)

The Enterprise-XXX
Its ongoing mission...
To explore strange new positions,
To seek our new life and new ways to romance it,
To boldly go where no horny man has gone before!

Starring Jolene Blalock's and Connor Trinneer's lubed bodies. :rommie:

I'm going to reserve judgement on the movie until after I see it. Definitely looking forward to it. Slightly miffd we hafta wait a whole year now...

Actually, I'm an ENT fan and I said GO BACKWARDS NOT FORWARDS... (or should that be stay where you are?)

See! Even you don't understand "us". So what hope does J.J. have? :p

Heh.. I don't recall throwing a fit when I heard the news. I was pretty psyched. I still am. A lot of people that I know who are fans seem to be psyched also. So I don't really know who these fans are and why they're throwing a fit. They don't seem like fans either way.

Oh go on. Jump the gun and praise/condemn it like so many of us already have.

OK, sure...It's like this...I praised the concept of Enterprise, but some of what they actually did with the series I had problems with...Romulans in the first season? Borg? Seriously. I'm looking forward to it, especially any interplay between Quinto and Nimoy. I just hope they don't royally screw things up. I see at least one blaring continuity error brewing...

I was hoping it would be set post-ENT...The Romulan Wars/birth of the Federation type thing...But I'm content with what I've heard about it.

^ :p Yeah, I know.

I guess my time on this board has transformed me into a smartass, wise-cracking pendant. ;)

You say that as if it's a bad thing.

sniff,,
mud shark as a mod you should be setting an example for the rest of us.
;)

frankly if someone tried to please 90 percent of trek fans they would wind up schizoid.

:rommie:

get a group of fifty fans together and ask them which is their favorite show and their perspective on the others.
