Someone mentioned that Widmore was in charge of Dharma. Is that the case? We know that Widmore is looking for the island, but I was never under the impression that he was in charge of Dharma.

Maybe Hanso & Widmore used to control Dharma (& therefor the Island) but then after the purge they lost control of it? Maybe once the purge took place Ben and the Others were able to hide the island from anyone else finding it again, so Widmore is no longer able to get there?
This would be possible if the mechanism that "Hides/Cloaks" the island is somehow controllable from the Island. Some sort of "phase alignment" thing. So all Ben had to do was change the settings and everyone that used to be able to locate the island is now no longer able to do so because they have the "wrong settings" to get there. Only people with the new settings can find there way there.
So, in effect, Ben (and the Others) stole the island from Widmore, Maybe Widmore was using it for evil and that is why the Others wiped out Dharma and took over. This way Ben and the Others are the good guys while Widmore is the bad guy.
