Nutrek's Characterization of James T. Kirk: Kelvin Movies vs. SNW

They look similar enough that you could believe they were related, like cousins or something. But no one is going to be confused as to who is who, which is which. Which is who, who is which?

They both look like a sort of generic handsome fella. A sort of Everyman.

You could pass either in the street and find them quite unremarkable (if they weren’t famous).

Uncanny though?

Bollocks.

Should've gone to Specsavers. :-)

Uncanny though? Really?

I suppose if we are talking in very broad strokes, as in: they are both male, caucasian, dark haired, two eyes and so on, sure... I'll grant they have a similar mouth, but that's it.

When the Vampire Diaries was going on, there was no discourse about Wesley looking like Carrey. It's a lazy comparison that seems to have gained traction after he put a yellow shirt on for Star Trek.

Even if I'm to concede that they look in any way similar, there are people who say the performance puts them in mind of Carrey and that *is* total bullshit.

They look very similar to me. But I grant I don't have whatever emotional baggage you clearly are carrying over the comparison.

Bollocks.
Today's thought that MUST BE QUASHED: two men looking alike. TrekBBS TrekBBSing.

You see it. Others don’t. Generally, this is a ridiculous debate.

I don’t understand why this has gone on as long as it has.

Because I'm not allowed to say they look similar, so it rolls on because people come back and tell me I'm not allowed to think it.

People need to get some fucking perspective. Touch grass is that what they kids say these days? I know Trek fans love to debate small things, but trying to even use the word "debate" in this context is pushing it.

Woah, take a breath, dude. Settle down.

This has been something going on for pages. It’s become a debate. And it is dumb.

Again, you and others think the two actors look alike. Others do not. It’s called an opinion. People can disagree with you. No one is saying you can’t see the actors the way you do. But it’s become a whole lot of “yeah, they do,” “no they don’t” bullshit.

I apologize if you feel as though I was pointing you out in particular. But it was a general statement and I was using your post as a jumping off point.

Here's what Google AI says, FWIW:

While standard commercial facial recognition systems (like Amazon Rekognition or Microsoft Azure Face API) generally do not flag Paul Wesley and Jim Carrey as the same person, algorithmic comparisons typically yield a moderate facial similarity score (roughly 60% to 70%) depending on the specific photos, lighting, and expressions used.

There's something there for everybody.

I love the fact that you're entering a 'debate' with people losing it over if two men look alike, to then use AI... I personally don't care but I feel the two sides will still be holding their pitchforks and flames and turn from each other and to you the outsider who's walked into town...because if there's one thing members hate more than spurious actor comparisions, it's AI... 😅

So you probably have united people, just now how you think!

(Also as one further aside, Gemini is the most full of shit AIs and I like "algorithmic comparisons typically yield a moderate facial similarity"... I mean is this is a common enough test to even use the word typically?)

Well, take it or leave it. By which I mean, there're specific assertions regarding similarity scores that have been quantified here, that can be tested by interested parties, and the claims confirmed or denied. The claims here are testable. I personally don't have the time to run the tests, but some people on the board, one or two maybe, just might.

No. Not even close. Having someone tell you they don’t interpret the images as you do is in no way, even indirectly, synonymous with “I’m not allowed to say they look similar.” It’s an absurd assertion. Your opinion is not being suppressed nor erased (it’s still there for all to see). It’s being challenged. That is not in any way an infringement of your rights or privileges. It’s a difference of opinion. Full stop.

I mean, there's double standards around. If a popular poster puts something about AI, no one will care, and I'm not seeing any negative reactions around here over it yet. If I or maybe even you posted about AI, you bet the insults and denigrations would start coming. You can point out the double standards, etc. but at some point you're not going to change a group mentality. I've tried before when I got attacked over not having a Paramount subscription, getting falsely called a racist over a comment on Klingon makeup etc.

I see you're already getting the rolling eye emoji and all that. Don't point out the double standards, the personal attacks, etc. even if you're right (and you are). It's not worth it, just run. This post itself will likely get a few mocking emojis etc. right on cue. I'm only posting this to warn you.

You have a major persecution complex.

Same applies to you. Disagreement is NOT synonymous with “attack” or suppression of of opinions or rights. It’s disagreement. Full stop.

Honestly. If you didn’t keep bringing it up, nobody would even bother to think about your “Paramount subscription” or lack thereof. At this point you are engaging in a performative display rather than making a compelling case for your point.

I would say, people should just be prepared to defend opinions on their merits rather than defending them by counterattacking someone else's opinion. If someone is plainly wrong, you can simply demonstrate that with justification of your own points. The other point is that you don't have to prove everyone else wrong to have a valid opinion.

For my part, I can see the resemblance, but it's a just a resemblance is some photos. If you stood them to act next to each, there wouldn't be much resemblance.

But so what? I get the impression that some people think that resembling Jim Carey somehow devalues Wesley's performance?

I think his performance stands well enough on its own. He didn't start off doing Shatner but over time, he gradually increased the number of Shatner notes as displayed in early season one. I thoroughly enjoyed the episodes where tge TOS era characters were all featured together. It gave me very comforting TOS vibes.

Well, except the, "Nobody calls me Captain when I'm off duty nonsense."

Ive tried before when I got attacked over not having a Paramount subscription, getting falsely called a racist over a comment on Klingon makeup etc.

You continue to bring these things up.

First, the Paramount subscription issue was explained time and time again. I have personally admitted on multiple occasions that it just didn’t make sense to me to keep posting about episodes you’ve never seen, that I’ve respected your choice to boycott and that I’m weak when it comes to new Trek. You’ve never been warned by the mods and largely, the issue has really been dropped, until you bring it back up again. Continuing to bring it up makes you look as though you can’t let things go.

As for the Klingon makeup thing, it was a confusing situation and while your INTENT might not have been racist, it could certainly be considered that. Racism knows no bounds and I’m sorry that you got caught in that. I contributed to that and I am sorry if I mistook your intent. HOWEVER, continuing to bring it up makes you look as though you can’t let things go.

This is a discussion group. People will disagree with you. On occasion, there might be pile-ons. Occasionally, we might get too passionate for our own good. Sometimes we ALL need to be taken down a notch. It does not mean that anyone does things out of spite. Annoyance, sure. There’s a lot of that. But this whole thing screams of three things that you might need to seek self-awareness on: (1) seeking attention, (2) being your own worst enemy and most importantly (3) not being able to let things go. That doesn’t really endear you with anyone.

But as has been stated elsewhere, if you really want to go to Reddit, you will need much thicker skin than you would need staying here. Just my $0.02.
