A general observation, from casually coming across “Operation — Annihiliate!” on Pluto TV for the first time in a long while —
I’ve never been one to discount or ignore the various sequels/prequels, most of which I’ve always liked. So most of the time, when watching TOS today, I have no problem retroactively incorporating my knowledge of the other shows into how I view original Star Trek now — oh hey, there’s Spock (a member of the Vulcan melder minority, whose uber-Vulcan self-presentation has only really firmed up, by conscious choice, in the last few years) and Chapel (who’s killed multiple Klingons while hopped up on combat stims, and is Spock’s former lover, which is why she gets all yearning about him), serving in Starfleet (which was devastated in the previous Klingon War it came moments away from losing some years ago)!
But as someone who grew up on TOS reruns in the 70s, I admit that it can also be nice to let all that go and watch Star Trek purely as the show I remember, with nothing “existing” but what’s on that screen right that moment.
They’re both valid lenses.

Absolutely! Don’t get hung up on canon or continuity. Just enjoy Star Trek as you like - in that direction lies the beginning of wisdom.

The reason the MU and the prime universe stayed so close to each other with most of the same people born and then started to drift apart around the 23rd or 24th century is that its existence depended on having Christopher Pike go back and kill the dinosaurs. Paramount Plus is showing me Catherine Hicks for Star Trek IV, Grace Lee Whitley for Star Trek VI, Alan Ruck for Star Trek Generations, and the really puzzling one because I had to look up his name, Phillip R. Allen for Star Trek III.
