At the end of Ahsoka S1, Thrawn returns to the main galaxy, and our protagonists think this could be a very dangerous and deadly development. Now, we in the audience know that this campaign, whatever it amounts to, won't be significant enough to merit a direct mention in the Sequel Trilogy. We also know that he obviously can't kill anyone who's still alive in those movies.
(Acknowledged: Thrawn didn't kill anyone major in the Thrawn Trilogy, or win any lasting victories. But, Zahn had a smaller cast to work with in those books, the very first to continue the story post-RotJ, and probably couldn't kill anyone he wasn't also introducing in that same story. Whereas Disney Thrawn has already been around for longer than he was in his said trilogy.)
So, who can Thrawn potentially kill? A quick list:
- Ahsoka (LOL, like that'll happen)
- Any of the Rebels crew apart from the already-offed Kanan (ditto)
- Din Djarin or Grogu (ditto)
- Cal Kestis
- Boba Fett and/or his pals Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) and the Wookiee Black Krrsantan
- Mon Mothma
- Lobot
- Kleya Marki or Vel Sartha
- Cara Dune (off-screen?
)
- Talon Karrde (not even introduced yet)
- Mara Jade (also not introduced, but it would be darkly funny, from a certain point of view, if she were introduced only to quickly bite it without ever meeting Luke)
Finally, Thrawn could bombard the hell out of Coruscant, thus causing the New Republic capital to move to the Hosnian system. I don't know if any books have explained said move, but so far as I know, nothing live-action has done so, so any such explanation could always be overwritten.
Now, realistically, I'm not sure Filoni would want to take any of his major characters off the table just to bolster Thrawn's villainy. So, I'd say Mon Mothma might be the biggest plausible kill, with mass devastation of Coruscant a close second. Mothma could always perish in such an attack.
As for hero character deaths in general, I don't necessarily demand that villains rack up some significant kills to prevent the story from being a waste, but, on the other hand, if one keeps adding heroes to the roster and none of them ever die, no matter how many scrapes they get in, it does tend to lower the stakes.
Anyhow, this admittedly isn't the deepest thread or anything. Just a wee diversion.
