I was watching part of the latest incarnation of The Real World and was thinking to myself how far a once interesting and intriguing show has fallen. MTV just has run the series into the ground IMO then again maybe I just don't relate to these people who seem to be so superficial and shallow compared to the earlier casts. Now it seems that the same thing not only happens every season but every episode-drinking, flirting etc.

The earlier seasons just seemed to have a little bit more to them in exploring issues important to young adults-AIDS, prejudice, finding a career etc.

So I was wondering when do you think the show fell apart.

For me it would be with season ten's Back to New York. Up until then I enjoyed all the seasons. But after that I just wasn't interested although I did think San Diego was a bit better and I don't see how Las Vegas was so highly rated.

    And to refresh your memories:

    NY
    LA
    SF
    London
    Boston
    Seattle
    Hawaii
    New Orleans
    NY 2.0
    Chicago
    Las Vegas
    Paris
    San Diego
    Philadelphia
    Austin
    Key West
    Denver
    Sydney

I always wanted to go on The Real world and be the guy that doesn't talk to anybody or bother anyone, and just minds his own business.

I was thinking just that the other day. I flipped over to MTV to the first time in..years and it was all just stupid bullshit dating shows.

As for "Real World". The 1st one was a interesting social-experiment and the more real of the shows, the rest really just strike me as ad-libbed soap-operas.

My favorite Real World will always be San Francisco. And yes, the show has become a joke. Do they do anything besides drink, have sex and fight with each other?

I haven't watched Real World since Seattle...since then it's been "Let's film hot drunk people" and that's just not entertaining.

I sorta enjoyed the New Orleans one. Then again I was younger. And it's really the only one I ever watched.

That was the last one that was pure though, right? As in, before people had to work together, could get booted off, etc.? Or did they get rid of that?

When I think about it though, this isn't really a topic I care all that much for. I really do apologize for hitting "submit reply" :(

I stopped really enjoying "The Real World" (what a silly name for such a convoluted series) after season 4 or 5, and stopped watching altogether after season 8/Hawaii. I can't believe this show is even still on!

i believe i have been watching off and on since hawaii... the focus has definately changed, though it has been gradual.

the importance of their "job" has subsided. "prizes" are now a big motivator ("win a vacation" and if you are popular enough, come back for a real world challenge show). the show tends to focus purely on going out to drink at 1 specific bar and filming the drunken antics.

People can still get kicked off for fighting, but now it's very specific. shoving doesn't count, enticing a person to punch you gets a pass (i think that happened in austin), throwing objects at people or breaking personal property doesn't mean anything (though i heard that if you break stuff, it comes out of the money you'd make on the show).

at it's core, the show could be interesting. the way it is now, watch people drink and hook up, and maybe fight... sounds like every other mtv reality show...

Oh, The Real World. How crappy you are.

They say it was the first "reality show." It's funny because I love reality TV, but The Real World is one of those shows that I just won't touch. It's a disgrace to the genre, or any genre really.

I've never cared for the show and haven't watched MTV in at least a decade, but if this interview with one of the new cast members is any indication, things aren't getting any better.

Why is this shit still on the air? Does anyone actually watch it?

not to nit pick, but in that clip the chick says they need a blonde southern belle... i know they've had one blonde southern belle in the last 3 shows... however, i dont believe they've actually had an asian male on the show yet... i also dont think they've had anyone too overweight on the show (the challenges had a guy who was pretty cool)...

i'm glad the show still goes on, i enjoy reading the recaps on tvgasm.com...

did you know they recently had a real world award show? hottest female, best run-in with the law, steamiest scene... quality categories...

actually, what i'd love to see is a reality show about the people making this show. kinda like a project green light. i'd like to see what the camera crew and the directors think as these things go on.

They have pretty much sucked. I will always like the first one best and I kind of liked Ruthie in Hawaii so I watched that season, but all the rest I maybe watched one or two episodes and then ignored them.

I wonder if it's shows like these that make high schoolers with 1.9 GPAs and zero work skills think they're entitled to jackpot jobs right off the bat and that other jobs are beneath them.
