1st spinoff about Spock, circa 1975

I agree it would be more for Trek freaks than for broad based appeal. Perhaps Fred Frieberger could have mated Space 1999 & Landau & Nimoy. Ok, that was silly.

I suppose it would hinge on the new crew member as Spock's right hand man, & perhaps Sulu would be a common sidefeature with his own ship. Bones, Scotty, & Uhura & Chekov would remain.

Splitting the Spock-Kirk marriage a tough thing to overcome. Still, I would've watched no doubt.

Wasn't something like this one of the first revival proposals NBC approached GR with in the early '70's?

Yes -- David Gerrold mentions it in The World of Star Trek, but he doesn't give any information about what the premise of the show would have been; just that it would have centered around Spock, without the other Trek characters. I've always wondered about what the pitch was.

I've seen some of GR's preliminary notes from this attempt.

Instead of the pointy sideburns, Starfleet regulations now call for muttonchops.

I wonder if Gerrold even knows what he was talking about. He's probably thinking of the earliest phase II pitches.

Could've sworn I read about this in the Roddenberry/Sackett The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture book, though it's been almost thirty years. (Holy crap!) The idea being that CBS suggested a show about Spock on Vulcan, among other Vulcans; Roddenberry didn't see the point.

Overall, they probably could not have pulled this off. They would have had to change Spock so that he was not just playing off of Kirk and more of a stand-alone character, would have had to create a scenario where his talents and strengths would have been centrao to the show, and done this in a way that the viewer was not constantly wondering where Kirk was. All of these are huge challenges.

It would have run for 13 episodes, the final 2 of which would never have aired due to cancellation and would only be available on the DVD box set.

Pretty much. BTW; Star Trek: Phase II would have nevr worker. Did you see the re-design of the Enterprise? Yuck!

Yeah, I think it was The Making of STTMP, where Roddenberry related the story of NBC wanting to revive/create a show with Spock on Vulcan. Roddenberry said that Spock shines the best when he's among humans for a contrast not when he's part of the crowd. The best format to show case Spock was Star Trek so why bother creating a new show when the old one still works fine?

I had the same thought.
