No “Living Witness” closure coming

Robert Picardo pitched an episode for SFA S3 that would have had him play both the regular EMH and a de-aged version of himself - the EMH from "Living Witness" (who presumably never has an ageing subroutine added)

It really sucks that something fans have been asking about since before the show made it's debut will never be addressed.:(

Yeah, that one’s a bummer. There has already been some discussion about this in the General discussion thread.

While I agree that such an episode could have been neat, I can’t really say I ever felt “Living Witness” needed any kind of follow-up or closure.

I will say, I wonder if they would have found a way to meaningfully tie the premise of the backup Doctor turning up into one of the cadet characters, since they seem to have made the conscious decision to have them be the main focus of the show. Maybe there would have been an interesting dynamic with SAM, who’s basically meeting something like her uncle. Maybe this would have revealed something about her dad she hadn’t realized yet.

Maybe if we’re lucky this will become a comic or novel at some point.

I'll be honest, this doesn't bother me at all. Living Witness is a good episode, but I'll echo the sentiment that it doesn't need a sequel.
I suppose it depends on the definition of need. It isn't lacking anything not having a follow up but a sequel episode wouldn't detract from it and could make for an interesting duology.

It really just depends on what kind of greater plot could house this reunion of sorts to make it substantial. In the olden days it could have made for a bottle episode where we dive in to the Doctor's history of the centuries some more. But in the 10 episode years we don't really have the time for that unless it is simply relegated to a B plot but that does it a bit of a disservice.

I like the way living witness ended. Besides they probably would have screwed it up and make the other EMH look old as well.

I do think it would have been at least a neat script to try to work into a season, but the modern show format has so much to do with the season long arcs on top of fewer episodes that cute things like this probably would not be likely to happen even if the show kept going.

TNG's Inner Light needed no sequel, but there was one made in comic form...and it was awful.

Better to leave Living Witness' story as is.
Inner Light did kind of get a follow up episode in Lessons. And the flute reappeared. So it was not exactly a one and done like Living Witness.

Living Witness didn't leave itself begging for a conclusion but has left us with a story. There is another Doctor out there and he was heading back to Earth. Sure before this was so far in the future it didn't really have much weight but we've caught up to that time period no, we have a wider world in this setting and other characters populating it so we have an avenue for a story.

What kind of story beyond a fun little side adventure with the Doctor debating his life choices with his younger self I'm not quite sure yet. I suppose with Academy not getting a season 3 I'm free to headcanon what would have been a funny yet philosophical bottle episode that probably wouldn't have worked in a 10 episode season.

It depends on how much their second year at the Academy sets up what might have happened in their third year to see if that story would have fit somewhere in the wider plot.

The flute in Lessons was a nice callback, and those are definitely welcome. Sequels can be difficult.

Still, Doctor vs Doctor could have been fun if done right.

It's not like anyone was really asking for it until they found out the doctor was in SFA.
I'm pretty sure there have been people wondering if the Backup EMH's fate would be addressed ever since we found out Disco was moving to the 32nd century. I know I've been making jokes that his ship was destroyed in the Burn long before we found out the Doctor would be in SFA.

Yep, I too assumed the backup was destroyed in the Burn.
