A Funny Thing about Sickbay

Franz Joseph also drew an inaccurate profile view of the Type 2 phaser because he was working from a poor-quality photograph that had a large shadow on it.
I'm gonna chime in here and suggest something that I've wondered about for a long time, and see what others think.

In FJ's tech manual W/O page TO: 01:08:53 which shows the phaser contours and dimensions, so that fans can recreate their own if they want, there's a notation at the bottom of the page that reads "WARNING! DISCARD ANY UNIT SHOWING ANY DIMENSIONAL CHANGE!".

I think this might be a wink and a nod to the fans that he knows this doesn't match what they see on TV, but is nevertheless his preferred "official" version for the Tech Manual?

So did he know the picture in TMOST was inaccurate but used it anyway???

I think it means that if heat from the battery causes parts to melt or expand, it's time to put that one down the disposal chute. You how, if you used the wrong charger, a cell phone can burst into flames hours later? It would be along those lines. That's how I read it.

The forewords in the Tech Manual provide sufficient explanation in-universe for any discrepancies that there might be. I have no doubt that Franz Joseph knew there were inaccuracies.
It's stunning how much work FJ put into his project. IIRC, Gene Roddenberry approved the Articles of Federation, but he doubted the fans would ever read it. I know I didn't. I just devoured the technical drawings without end.

But in any case, I'm glad FJ gained financial security from having two massive best sellers, and although not a Star Trek fan himself, he became a big man at conventions, where young people would gather 'round him as their technical expert. So he put in tons of work at risk of seeing it all come to nothing, but it ended up changing his life forever.

And as a result a LOT of woefully inaccurate phaser items, both from fan run cottage industries and licensed items were distributed because the makers based their products upon the the FJ Tech Manual illustrations. I don't think I was made aware of its true shape until I gained access to the internet in the latter 1990s. Dopey me... :brickwall:

Friendly neighborhood back-on-topic bot reporting for duty...

I think the Gymnasium was only used as such for Charlie X.
True, although it's interesting that you can still see the Gymnasium wall appliances on the back wall of the Theater in The Conscience of the King (five episodes later in filming order). Whether this is because they wanted to imply in-universe that the Theater was assembled within the Gymnasium whenever needed, or because they just didn't have the time, space, or materials to cover up the wall machines (and thought they might want the Gym set again in the future), I have no idea.

• Hearing Room (The Menagerie, Space Seed)
+ The Deadly Years, Turnabout Intruder?

It gets a little dicey putting an exact label on some of these rooms, because the redresses are sometimes partial/overlappish. In Deadly, you could just as easily call it the briefing room with a witness chair added and the main table pushed around a little. Turnabout's Hearing Room uses the benches from the Chapel.

Anyway, I don't know if you're categorizing by function, appearance, or some combination, but here are my pedantic possible candidates for the Hearing Room. I applaud the effort and would love to see whatever final lists you end up with (would be helpful to my as-wild-as-I-can-make-it physical set model).
