box office

That should read “harder to break even”.

It’s a common conflation to think that being a hit (i.e. popular with audiences) is the same as financial success/profit. And I wish it would go away.

It’s very very possible to be a loss making hit.

Just ask any Hollywood accountant.
THANK. YOU.

"Hit with the audiences" and "Box office success" should be different metrics.
Unfortunately for Hollywood it's mostly box office that counts.

Searchlight’s Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is looking like $3.8M today (including previews on its way to a potential $10M in fourth place at 3,010 sites. The sequel was made for less than $20M net, we hear. It’s being pushed out of third place by Hindi action sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which is eyeing a great $3.6M today at 967 locations and $12.7M opening and 4-day cume north of $16M. Disney is doing better in second place, where Pixar’s Hoppers is still vibrant with $5.6M today and $21M in its third weekend for a running total by EOD Sunday of $123.3M. Fifth place goes to the second weekend of Universal’s feature take of Colleen Hoover’s Reminders of Him at 3,441 sites with a second Friday of $2.7M, 3-day of $8.7M, -52%, and 10-day cume of $33.8M.

Box Office: ‘Project Hail Mary’ Rockets to $33 Million

It’s up, up and away for Amazon MGM’s “Project Hail Mary,” which rocketed to the top of the box office charts on Friday en route to a stellar opening weekend.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s “Project Hail Mary” earned $33 million domestically on Friday from 4,007 locations. The sci-fi drama is expected to blast off to $77 million by Sunday, which marks the best opening for Amazon MGM ever, legging out 2023’s “Creed III” ($58 million). The film will need to hold strong for several weekends to justify its $200 million price tag, but the optics look good considering its 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and excellent word of mouth.
Based on Any Weir’s 2021 novel, “Project Hail Mary” follows Ryan Gosling as brainy school teacher Ryland Grace, who wakes up on a spaceship light-years from Earth with no memory of how he got there. As the pieces fall back into place, he slowly remembers he is part of a plot to stop a mysterious substance from blacking out the Sun. Other cast members include Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, Lionel Boyce, Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung and Liz Kingsman.

Disney and Pixar’s “Hoppers” landed in second place on Friday with $5.4 million domestically. That marks yet another solid hold, declining just 26% from last week’s numbers. The animated adventure’s North American total should reach about $122 million by Sunday. After a string mistifires, Pixar can finally breathe a sigh of relief with the resounding critical and commerical success of “Hoppers.”

Searchlight Pictures’ “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” came in third place on Friday, pulling in $3.8 million domestically from 3,010 locations. The bloody horror sequel is projected to earn $9 million by the end of the weekend. The first “Ready or Not” opened similarly to $8 million domestically, but eventually powered to $28 million in the States and $57 million worldwide against a $6 million budget.

Samara Weaving returns as Grace, who, after surviving the Le Domas family’s lethal game, realizes she’s only made it to level two with the Danforths. This time, she must fight for her life alongside her estranged sister Faith, played by Kathryn Newton. Other cast members include Elijah Wood, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, David Cronenberg and Dan Beirne.

The No. 4 slot went to the Indian action epic “Dhurandhar The Revenge,” which made an estimated $3 million on Friday from just 987 North American theaters. The film is projected to gross $10.9 million by Sunday. A follow-up to 2025’s “Dhurandhar,” “The Revenge” continues the journey of Jaskirat Singh Rangi as he descends deeper into Karachi’s criminal underground. Cast members include Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, Sara Arjun and Gaurav Gera.

Fifth place went to Universal’s “Reminders of Him,” which added $2.7 million domestically on its second Friday in theaters. The teary romance is expected to gross $8.7 million by Sunday, pushing its North American total to a solid $33 million. “Reminders of Him” holds a $25 million production budget.

I really hope that Spring Break will bring a lot of the people to see it...it's a great movie. I am a bit concerned that Mario Galaxy will take away the audience.... but hopefully I am wrong on that.

Project Hail Mary is an original property (i.e. not based on a franchise that already has film/tv adaptations), and really has a distinct flavor that we needed to see in the cinema

Hindi movie Dhurandhar: The Revenge is ahead of Searchlight’s Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, $9.5M to $9.1M. Very upsetting that Ready or Not 2 didn’t scare up more. It was made for under a net $20M. What happened? Look at the grosses of the first movie (despite being a cash cow): An expanded audience wasn’t asking for a sequel. Searchlight was trying to find the best date for the film in the end, moving the sequel’s release a mere seven week ago. The Radio Silence directed movie was originally on April 10 in the second weekend of Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which will absorb even more atmosphere than what Project Hail Mary is taking up here. Twenty-one offshore territories delivered $2.8M for a global start of $11.9M.
I haven't watched that movie. But I did watch Scream 7. It's embarrassing that Scream 7 is breaking box office records instead of that film. It makes you wonder if everyone in the US is a Zionist or something? On top of that, the fanbase of this franchise has accumulated a bunch of xenophobes/foreign haters as well.

They've pulled in 190 million dollars for that film. It will probably do as much box office as Apple's F1 movie.

Among the box office releases coming this summer—Toy Story 5, Shrek 5, Supergirl, Masters of the Universe, Minions & Monsters, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey (dir. Christopher Nolan), and the live-action Moana—I’m really curious how Moana and Masters of the Universe will perform.

Especially since Masters of the Universe doesn’t seem to be getting a release here, as suggested by the fact that no promotional videos have been shared by Sony films Turkey or the local distributor TME Films.
