Any Way to Get A Copy of Jerome Bixby's ST:TNG "Mirror, Mirror" Sequel

Just ordered this. The introduction by Emerson Bixby may mention the TNG proposed sequel? I shall keep you posted. Love the cover art!

"Mirror, Mirror" collection of Jerome Bixby stories by Ian McLean, on Flickr

"Mirror, Mirror" (Strange Particle Press, 2014) is the first collection of Jerome Bixby's science fiction in nearly fifty years, showcasing some of his best work. Features four stories made immortal by TV. Elements from two of these stories, "One-Way Street" and "Mirror, Mirror," were woven into the Hugo Award-winning "Star Trek" episode, which gave birth to the evil mirror universe populated by sinister facsimiles of Kirk, Spock and the crew of the USS Enterprise. Another, "Cargo to Callisto", became the basis for the "Star Trek" episode, "By Any Other Name". "It's a Good Life" won immortality as an episode of "The Twilight Zone".

The anthology includes 11 other short stories (alas, no "Broken Mirror") and is edited and introduced by his son, screenwriter and producer Emerson Bixby with Jean Marie Stein.

I acquired a few TNG scripts and this 10-page outline was one of them. A few pics are up on Memory Alpha. I don't know if a full script of Broken Mirror exists.
You resurrected a 14 year old thread which is not in keeping with board rules. It would have been better to start a new one. It has generated significant new discussion though so we’ll leave it open.

My copy of the anthology arrived yesterday!

From the Introduction by Emerson Bixby: "Dad and I also wrote a sequel to Dad's "Mirror, Mirror", which will hopefully be included in this book..." [It isn't, sigh.] "Taking place in TNG's time, "Broken Mirror" posed the question, what if Kirk and Scotty screwed up 70 years ago when they returned from the Mirror Universe? What if they left the door to both Universes open, and matter from each universe has been seeping into its opposite? What if a bearded Vulcan begins tracking down the original landing party in an attempt to prevent both universes' destruction? Roddenberry loved it, but at the time Shatner was misdirecting 'Trek V' and his fee for a five minute cameo just wasn't feasible. Bummer." [pp 11-12.]

The book contains:

"Tubemonkey" (1949)
"Cargo to Callisto" (1950) -- became "By Any Other Name" episode of "Star Trek"
"EV" with Raymond Z. Gallun (1952)
"Sort of Like a Flower" (1952)
"It's a Good Life" (1953) -- sold to "The Twilight Zone"
"One-Way Street" (1953) -- inspired "Mirror, Mirror" episode of "Star Trek"
"The Slizzers" (1953)
"Small War" (1954)
"For Little George" (1954)
"Little Boy" (1954)
"Our Town" (1955)
"Mirror, Mirror" (1954) -- inspired "Mirror, Mirror" episode of "Star Trek"
"The Bad Life" (1963)
"The God-Plllnk" (1963)
"The Natural History of the Kley" (1954).

Okay, I'm curious to hear how "Cargo to Callisto" relates to "By Any Other Name," and what the 1954 "Mirror, Mirror" story is about. (Also, does "The Bad Life" have any connection to "It's a Good Life," or is it coincidence?)

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing.

Well as I said I am the one who acquired it, feel free to ask anything.
Could you give a break down of the basics? Plot, continuity to TOS. What is the TNG mirror universe like? Do they mention any historical moments between Mirror TOS ENTERPRISE and Mirror TNG ENTERPRISE?

The synopsis posted by Therin sums it up nicely. The original landing party in TOS accidentally "left the door open" between the two universes, and it's causing ripples that are destroying the universe. Spock II goes around attacking Scotty, McCoy, Kirk and mindmelding with them to look for answers. This leaves their brains momentarily void of all information. I can't see them ever having the budget to film this, for the story only Spock is really needed. Spock II needs more information how to fix the situation, and who better to mindmeld with than Spock I, who has put it all together himself after being questioned by Picard and arrived on the Enterprise.

I bet you are wondering how Spock II is doing in his own universe. He doesn't explain himself much, but he does mindmeld with Spock I to give him his Sarek's goodbye Spock I never got. Spock I then explains Spock II succeeded in his mission to bring democracy to his world, but his methods differed from what he would have chosen. It's only 10 pages and kind of rough. "They arrive on Tribble 5 or whatever".

It has aliens who've take over some people's bodies, so kinda sorta like the Kelvans adopting human forms, but that's about it. I'd never in a million years have thought it had anything to do with "By Any Other Name". Even calijg it "inspired by" seems like a giant stretch, but then again, "One-Way Street" is much more like TNG's "Parallels" than TOS's "Mirror, Mirror".

Like you, i am curious about the 1954 short story version of "Mirror, Mirror", maybe it features a parallel universe that's evil, so a more direct inspiration.

Well that was totally unnecessary and smacks of sour grapes that this story didn't get done and blames Shatner for some of that.

The story seemed "okay" enough. I would have appreciated a follow up to "Mirror, Mirror" at the time with some original cast involvement, but it would have taken a lot of focus away from the TNG crew without a major rewrite. They would have been better off making this an TOS feature.

Certainly sour grapes.

I recall resentment from several directions that Shatner was directing that movie and had supplied part of the story. Shatner had been able to call upon the "favoured nations" clause that was originally added to Shatner's and Nimoy's contracts that was meant to entice Nimoy to do TMP.

Because Nimoy had directed two movies, Shatner wanted to do the next two. He didn't end up insisting upon doing ST VI.

IIRC, according to a youtube video I watched, he got to do V only because Nimoy did IV and starred in it. Since Nimoy directed III but only had a cameo appearance, it didn't trigger the clause. But who knows, the youtube video author could have been wrong.

Never heard of this before. It could've been a lot of fun if they had gotten it made. That being said, I can see how hard it would've been to make happen.

As much as it pains me, I don't think the story needed the Original Series characters to work. It sounds like they are taking over the episode as it's been described.
