Yeah, I was wondering about that too. The descriptions don't really jump out to me as recognizable characters, but not quite as familiar with the minutia of the TOS characters' backstories as I am the other shows' characters.

Yes, in a TOS novel, who could this possibly be?
…and a young Starfleet officer who dreams of a life lived amidst the stars receives his first starship command
Go ahead, guess who this might be in a TOS 60th-anniversary novel.

A child mourns the mother she’ll never know; a scion of privilege falls into disgrace and yearns to redeem his sullied name
No idea who these are. None of the TOS main characters are known for being disgraced or not knowing their mother. Uhura's parents were killed in a shuttle accident, but she was already grown by this point. Chapel's mother had died at some point after Chapel started going to school. Spock was disgraced in the eyes of his father for not joining the Vulcan Science Academy, but not in the eyes of anyone else. Maybe these are entirely new events that have never been hinted at before. Or maybe the blurb is inaccurate. That's happened before.

There have been multiple different interpretations of Kirk's first command over the years, most recently my own The Captain's Oath and a section of David Goodman's Kirk "autobiography," and much earlier in Vonda McIntyre's Enterprise: The First Adventure and DC comics by Mike Barr and Howard Weinstein. I've been expecting Strange New Worlds to establish the Farragut as Kirk's first captaincy (since its design matches The Making of Star Trek's description of it as a "destroyer-equivalent" vessel smaller than the Enterprise), and one can argue that it already technically did in "The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail" (although that episode doesn't account for Elizabeth Dehner's line that Kirk requested Gary Mitchell for his first command).

Or maybe the author invented original characters to interact with the established characters? Maybe the blurb is written with a sense of poetic license to reflect the tone of the story? Maybe not every detail of the book needs to be spoon-fed nine months in advance?

Just read your last three posts. Congrats on responding to would-be reader enthusiasm in the most obnoxious manner possible.

Is it possible you're reading something into these that isn't there? I thought it just came across as using a rhetorical device.

At any rate, let's please refrain from personal comments about other posters.

A guy who claims Robert Picardo dared him to make his own Starfleet Academy on twitter, has released an off-brand AI slop book in 4 weeks. How is the release going, you ask?

He's getting absolutely slaughtered for his use of AI in the replies, and people are posting his domestic assault restraining order.:ack:

Even his avatar has a shit-eating smirk. Easy ignore for me. He's rage bait, even if he doesn't actually mean to be.

I've watched some of this guy's YouTube videos. He's a terrible content creator even by the standards of far right YouTubers. Pretty much all of his videos involve attacking popular franchises and then shilling his own novels as the alternative. Also attacks other right wing YouTubers like Ethan Van Sciver for some reason. He seems to hate everything.

I haven't read any of his novels, so I don't know if they're any good, but "Space Fleet Academy" is a very uninspired title. AI covers are pretty common for self-published novels. I had no idea about the restraining order.

Never heard of the guy, but he already lost me at the first line of the tweet. The AI usage just reinforces that it’s not worth reading, but I was already there anyway.

The The End of This Day’s Business post was a special situation, we don’t really need to post every rando’s self-published work in here. The Fan Fiction forum is down the hall and to the left. Oh, wait, they don’t want AI-generated slop in there either.

Perhaps this should go in the “Talentless Hack Uses AI Prompts to Generate Garbage” thread. (That was a joke, not a suggestion..,)
