"

Comments Welcome.

Good lord, that was a long first episode! Not that I'm complaining- a really enjoyable listen. I think you could probably tighten it up and shorted it, but it's also kind of nice the way it's a little more like an audio book than a radio show, with more detail and depth. What a great beginning!

So nice to hear the Hidden Frontier storyline being continued and expanded upon. Also great hearing many cast and characters from other fan productions, particularly Mrs. Cook as Caed from Intrepid, the ubiquitous Korg, and Keiran Azhan, who's popped in and out of HF and Intrepid, but has finally been nicely fleshed out here.

Also fun are the mentions of Garrovick, Helena, etc. And it's really cool that you're doing a story about the Preservers. I've always wanted to see more about them.

I like that the lead character has children about. It's something we didn't see enough of on Trek (yes, I remember Wesley Crusher and the little Wildman girl).

I like the Poser pic of the Ambassador on your site. I hope we get to see the rest of the team similarly fleshed out. And I'd love to see the ship.

I was going to complain about the opening narration- because almost every Trek fan production tries to start off with their own version of "Space, the final frontier..." and just replace the word "Enterprise" with their own ship, which I think sounds silly- but you did your own original opening, and it sets up the situation nicely.

Nit Picks:

Not crazy about the title- Shouldn't it be Star Trek: Diplomatic CORE? The word Relations makes me giggle inappropriately.

There's a TON of exposition in that first briefing room scene- probably could have been deseminated a bit more subtly.

I'm terrible with names- and I love simple, iconic names, like KIRK, SULU, SCOTTY, etc. I wish some of your character names, in particular the alien ones, were easier to hear and remember.

I think the Vulcan character is written too stiff and limited. I thought it was a good thing that Next Gen got away from Vulcans, but I think the result is that the modern Trek producers, and modern Trek fans, don't like or "get" Vulcans. They're a disiplined, peaceful people who have a way of life that's worked for them for 2 thousand years, they don't need lectures from humans about learning to deal with people with emotions. Especially not from a human Starfleet commander who is supposed to be respectful of the cultures of the folks under her command. Spock had a hard time with all that because he was struggling with being half human, but all that's been done to death- let's see Vulcans for their virtues, and not as defective humans. (rant!)

I think a 24th century teenager can say "cool" without mentioning (clearly for the 21st century audience) that it's a 20th century phrase. Do you have any idea what century all our modern phrases come from? Do we make sure to identify them when we say them?

I also think it was not the alien's place to liken the terrorists' actions with ethnic cleansing on 21st century Earth. One of the human starfleet officers should have made that analogy.

So tired of officers who act out and disobey superior officer's orders to "stand down!" etc., but I guess that's unavoidable in a militaristic drama (One reason I hate that brat Starbuck!!!).

Section 31 already? They really get around.

Sorry for all the crazy nits- some of them are legit points, please take them as constructive. I really enjoyed listening to this, can't wait for more. THANK YOU!

Thanks for taking the time to a ) listen to it and b ) write so much detail.

There's some good points there. The title is not the worst we had, I think you might have to settle for the giggles every time you look at this thread ;)

The names are a bit tough but we were going for alien, future episodes are likely to be more around the 45 mins mark and less characters in each so hopefully this will get easier. We'll also be watching out for unneccessary dialog, not sure if we'll catch it all though.

Some interesting points about the Vulcans and "cool".

One thing I'm still trying to get my head around is who is starfleet and who is not. This leads to your "stand down" point, as Dr Gregson is not Starfleet and Captain Tohre is.

Oh and more pics to come, here's a small taste :

Well done. It took a while, but I have to say - not bad. Interesting to listen to an audio drama without lots of phasers and photon torpedoes going off. I look forward to more eps in the future.

Thank you for the feedback, guys. I'm Alex, the creator and EP of Diplomatic Relations. Im glad to have some constructive critisicms, which I will take on board.
But, I also want to defend my characters and the way they are written. I do respect the way we have seen the Vulcans on the various series (especially even though i risk getting flack for it, on Enteprise), but personally, i COULD NOT STAND Tuvok for the majority of Voyager, because of some of thw attitude he had with Neelix - don't get me wrong, i am no Neelix-lover, but some of his behaviour was deplorable. Sovik is NOT your typical Vulcan, and more of that WILL come out as the episodes progress, which will explain his behaviour. Kingsley also is aware of how Sovik can be, which is why she reacts the way she does.
As Michael pointed out, one of the main differences in our show is that the Starfleet officers are kept to a minimum. Both Tohre and Azhan are only on temporary assignment, and this is primarily a civilian-run Diplomatic Corps operations. We will focus more on the interaction between the two, and I do have plans to expand on it greatly later on.
It was fun writing Azhan, since I portray him on Intrepid now, and was a chance to continue building my own interpretation of him. Im annoyed (but understanding) that this became my premiere performance of him, before the 2 shorts I've filmed have been aired, but ce la vie!
The pics are courtesy of John Whiting, bless his soul, who I harassed for many hours to get them right! Thanks again, John!
So, i hope that clears up some points, and let the reviews continue!

Great job Alex and everyone. Michael's getting rather good at sound mixing!

TaL may be released rather sooner than you think....

I see it as a collaboration, m'self: regardless of how cranky I got, your comments and requests improved the images beyond what I could accomplish on my own.

So, while I appreciate the compliments, you should also be taking a bow, Alex.

At any rate, you are quite welcome. And thank you for not taking the first simplistic efforts as acceptable.

...This leads to your "stand down" point, as Dr Gregson is not Starfleet and Captain Tohre is.

That's a good point you and Orbiting Master make, and one thing that will make your Trek show stand out- Federation civilians working with Starfleet.

As for Orbiting Master's comments about the Vulcans, I look forward to learning more about Sovik and his differences, should make him a more interesting character. As for the Vulcans on Enterprise, I will try and not say something nasty here (though even Jolene Blaloc said they were doing them wrong). Also, Tuvok was super cool- yeah, he was mean to Neelix, but he came around- he even danced for Neelix when he left the ship:devil:

Those are awesome. That John Whiting is a very talented and busy guy, and I applaud his continued good taste in beautiful "mature" women

It's taken me a while to get to listening to this, but just finished the first episode and am about onto the second - but this is pretty damn good, obviously quite wordy and occasionally far too many people in a scene for me to remember exactly who's who, but this is pretty cool. Kinda like Star Trek does The West Wing.
