The TVM is getting a 4K release from the original 35mm film!

Edit: The links are down. I assume they went live too soon since the official announcement isn't out yet. (Hope they don't cancel my order.)

Well I guess we now what McGann was shooting something for late last year.

Hopefully 'Spearhead From Space' will follow.

And I'm still baffled as to why there weren't 4K releases for the last two series and the 60th Specials
Spearhead from Space looks *so good* compared to the rest of season 7. The choice to go ahead and just do the whole thing on film really paid off. Sorry in-studio tv camera guy union.

So excited about this - a dream release that I never thought would happen. Looks excellent from the trailer, and reassuring that Paul Vanezis has supervised this remaster.

Spearhead was only 16mm so is probably pushing it for 4K. Peter Crocker said the negatives were showing their age for the Blu-ray. But even an upscale of the 2K master with HDR *might* be worth doing.

I agree it's baffling why the recent series haven't had 4K releases when they're available in UHD on the iPlayer.

The only thing I can think of is that it's due to Disney. Hopefully now they have the freedom to do it. Just stick everything from The 60th to this year's Special into one box set.

Yes, that would be a good approach. Given that it'll form it's own mini-era, it would be nice to have a frank retrospective about what went right, and what didn't, and talk about the original Series 2 ending etc. But I won't hold my breath!

Looks like any scenes combining CGI and live-action will be upscaled. It's a shame but the vast majority of it will still look amazing.

I saw the trailer on Youtube this morning, and I was a little surprised they had Sylvester McCoy narrate it instead of Paul McGann. It was a great narration, but it kind of made it seem like McCoy was a bigger part of the movie than he really is.

I'm expecting a second trailer with McGann closer to release; which is presumably what he was spotted shooting last year.

Something kind of like what they've been doing for the season releases? That would make sense.

I'm curious - what was censored in the U.S. broadcast version as compared to the UK broadcast version?

Nothing, it was the other way round. The UK version had most of it's violence cut at the last minute.

I think the only real difference between the ‘uncensored’ UK version and the US version will be the credits and the dedication to Jon Pertwee.

This will be interesting to watch since the US release as far as I know as problems with it's audio since the way it was sourced. What I had heard was that it was originally in NTSC and then converted to PAL to air in the UK. When it came time to do the US release, it was converted from PAL to NTSC and the audio got screwed up in the process. Hopefully, this 4K release doesn't have any issues.

Yeah, what they mean is that it's the version prepared for the UK before the last-minute BBFC cuts. So it has slightly different credits and the ad break fades are shortened.

Essentially it's the version that's been released on DVD, only rebuilt in 4K and running at the correct speed. Hopefully the Pertwee caption is restored.

Order links are working again now.

And here are some some comparisons. Looking at them reminds how much overscanning there used to be in the old days.
