It must happen, there has to be floating voters who will vote either way.
In the UK there is definitely those who will vote for their party irrespective of whos in charge although that appears to have shifted a little as it looks like Tory voters shift to Reform, which is just tory but further right.
If a Democrat was a pedophile, I wouldn’t have to think for even a moment about voting for them. I simply wouldn’t do it.
That Trump continues to get as far as he does is an indictment of how poor those running the GOP are doing.

I kind of wish options would be explored for an additional party in the U.S. In Canada, we have a system with multiple parties, with 3 main parties that create more of a dynamic for checks and balances.
I know people who vote against their own best interests because of their political beliefs.
One of the differences between our two countries is that Canada is a parliamentary democracy.
The United States is not. The executive branch has its own independent election. Further complicating matters, the electoral college is the body that technically elects the president, which I don't believe has any analog. The overwhelming majority of states have all their electors vote for the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote (in the state), so there's a very steep hill to climb before a third party can garner even just one electoral vote for president at all.
Interestingly, in Canada we don't vote for the candidates, but rather the party and their platforms. I've always felt the two-party system in the U.S was a little odd given that it can be one-sided at times, especially now. In Canada you 4 active parties that all have a voice in the government, and without getting into too much detail, I think it helps to keep it balanced and with more varied opinions.
For a long time I thought it weird to vote for a party instead of individuals. Parties are a spectrum and not every politician is going to have the same views and methodologies.
However, with the (greater) rise of turning politicians into celebrities, I can I see the appeal of voting for parties over politicians. This can help reduce the celebrant nature of politicians and theoretically focus more on policies. That said, I would still have my above issue.
