What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

yea
First of all, welcome.

Secondly, I think TWOK gets favorably compared (in the stupid comparison games) because it was preceded by the Motion(less) Picture. It captured an action/adventure vibe that TOS often utilized, but was lacking in TMP, as well as deliberate TOS references, even if the characters had obviously moved on. It then pulled pages from the TOS playbook of Shakespeare references, classical literature references, and a Sherlock style villain update for Khan, moving Khan from one off to Kirk's nemesis in his "rogue's gallery." Couple that with memorable lines and performances and it gets that film tossed up there, especially compared against TMP's more milder performances, and people will see that film stand out.
thank uu

yes im not saying its a bad movie, just that it gets more hype than the other movies which I personally don't understand, but then again its just perspectives and personal opinions. its not a bad movie :)

I guess. I feel it's a poor description and actively undermines both franchises by insisting they must be related..
I don’t think it’s saying they’re related; they aren’t, except by similarity or influence. It’s just that they share a “mold”. But I guess this is getting down into the weeds already.

I guess that's where I differ. How far in to the weeds is this mold? To my mind, keeping them separate but drawing from a similar cloth is sufficient enough without calling one "Star Trek" anymore than I would Stargate "Star Trek" or Star Trek" "Forbidden Planet."

But, I guess that's arguing technicalities. I guess I don't see the value to it, but I'm sure others do.

It did? I recall a blink and you miss it TARDIS. No clue about Alien. Unless we're going down the Gorn are like the Xenomorph road. But that's not "bringing in" its just an influence on the story. Trek has hundreds of those.

This past season (are we past the spoiler limits?)

Pelia has a line "Challenging, schmallenging. Remind me to tell you about the time I spent with the time-traveling Doctor I once knew."

Why can't people just say that?

Like, I can say MASH is STAR TREK because it espouses diversity and cooperation. Same with Stargate because it has exploration of alien planets and a Preserver like culture.

Vs. if I say I like X, Y, and Z shows because they espouse values I value.

The beauty of Orville is that because Trek has a multi-verse one can head canon Orville into the Trek universe if they want by simply saying it exists in one of those universes were humans never created Starfleet and maybe evolution went differently and so you got different aliens in the mix. Granted you can literally do this with just about any show or movie that doesn't exist in a world were magic is real or GODS are really like say Hercules or Buffy etc.

The difference is it is simply more fun to do with Orville because it does carry the spirit of Trek values. We all know Seth McFarlande was a big Trek fan and this was his chance to do some Star Trek . I think people get to worked up over this issue that isn't really a issue. People thinking of Orville as real Trek in their head canon really is not that big of a deal.

I would say the same about people who want to pretend Lower Decks erased Discovery from canon which is really more of a joke than something people take seriously. But hey if people want to take a Trek show they don't like and head canon it out of existence that is no big deal. Let people enjoy their fandom in the way they like, IMO.

No.

Just confusing, as the crude humor and drug use would get it panned if it was Star Trek. Look at the whole debate over Raffi and her substance use and the insistence that in the 24th century addiction would no longer be a problem and people wouldn't use addictive substances.

I for one would love to see a severed human leg drop out from the ceiling and plop on the conference room table in the middle of one of Picard's stuffy "I want options because I can't make any decisions for myself" department head meetings.

Just ONCE!

Deleted scene from (insert any TNG episode):

A small temporal anomaly from the future drops a Ferengi ensign's severed leg onto Picard's lap in the middle of a conference.

In the future humans will still be humans. Same issues just with fancy tech.

I don't have a issue with crude humor or people using drugs in Trek. I would prefer more of a mix of real cuss words and future cuss words and if you do use cuss words you need to stick with the ones that are timeless. Shit and Fuck seem fine. But if a character said another character was dealing with brainrot or they were a Nazi that would be so current day slang.
