SMG to star in Buffy sequel series from Chloé Zhao

Plus, there is a lot of nostalgia out there right now and studios are looking threw what they have the rights to, and seeing what they can bring back if there are surviving cast members. Surviving cast members may be looking for a paycheck. Retirement may not be paying the bills. Sudden costly health issues for them or somebody they know, etc.

To slightly change something...

Pitch Meeting Studio Executive: "Why would you want to do this? You retired."

Pitch Meeting Actress: "Because money."

Pitch Meeting Studio Executive: "That works."

TVLINE | You've filmed the pilot episode for the upcoming "Buffy" reboot. How has it been working with Sarah Michelle Gellar?
I can't really speak much about it until next year, but Sarah, just being around her is so sweet. I miss her so much. I miss working with her. She's honestly such a legend, and seeing how much she cares about this is really, really lovely, and the fans should be excited.

Since she said this, it means she has received approval for the season.

All that says is that she filmed a pilot.
Saying "I can't say anything until next year" means implicitly that the shooting of the first season will begin next year.

Moreover:

Sarah Michelle Gellar returns as part of the “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer” (1997-2003) sequel series from Chloé Zhao, expected to premiere on Hulu in 2026.

Not necessarily, it could just mean that they're still waiting for an answer. Even if it isn't picked up, she still wouldn't be able to talk about it until they know for sure what's going to happen.

That doesn't mean it's been picked up, that means that people are expecting it to air next year, if it's picked up. If it was definitely picked and going to be airing, they would have just said it will be airing next year. But saying it's expecting to air means that we still don't know for sure that it will.

Yeah, I agree with your interpretation.

I think; If approved, it will be around February or March. Filming will begin in the summer.

A famous director only directing the pilot is not remotely uncommon. It helps give the series a push, and the director gets free money for every episode made thereafter.
I'm pretty sure she's the creator of the show, so she's more than just the director of the pilot.

Nobody said she wasn't, just that it's unsurprising that she wouldn't direct more episodes herself.

For comparison, Rian Johnson created Poker Face and was one of its executive producers, but he only directed four of its 22 episodes (three in season 1, one in season 2) and wrote two (the season 1 premiere and finale).
