box office

Good "word of mouth" equals staying power.

In a month, it is possible we will hear Feige's view on the FF's performance and its imagined effect on Marvel films going forward (although one can guess Marvel Studios is hoping beyond hope that RDJ will be the spearhead of a course correction for the studio).

Regarding word of mouth and Superman, some have posted the hope it will reach 670 million (a reference to Man of Steel's $670,145,518 worldwide earning), but the film currently sits at $583,184,195, meaning it would need to earn another $86,961,323 just to match Man of Steel's earning and after so many weeks in release, that seems a highly unlikely outcome.

Movies that don't make enough money = movie didn't click with general audiences = movie is 'bad'.
Rather rudimentary definition of "bad" I think. Perhaps bad for business but doesn't make a bad movie. Just an unpopular one.

But, I don't go to theaters anymore so what do I know? No one is paying me because of the box office.

It really, really isn’t. Some movies gain life and extra money when they click with home audiences over the long term. Lots of them out there, some that end up with sequels based on their performance post-theatrical release.

The more you post about the film industry, the less you show that you know about it. Even for an amateur on the outside looking in, like many folks here. Maybe quit patting yourself on the back for your hot takes and take a few minutes to learn something about the industry…

This is an interesting case as the current Superman is outperforming Man of Steel domestically. The difference between the two films is almost entire because of international numbers. Similarly, if the Fantastic Four's international numbers were on par with those for MCU movies from a few years ago, it would be considered a success.

Too true.

Hell, Superman has even driven an uptick in the Snyderman flicks on basic cable and streaming. All good from the Warners POV and all to Gunn's credit. ;)
