The Librarians: The Next Chapter Season 1

The ghost train episode was pretty good, but I'm wondering -- did the original show have this much magical stuff happening right out in public? I could buy the ballet incident or the missile launch in the premiere being written off with mundane explanations, but we've had a very public werewolf-ish-thingy attack and a runaway train on nonexistent tracks, and I have to wonder how the public's reacting to all this, given that there's no discussion of any kind of magical coverups or memory wipes happening.

That's a good point, really. It's been quite a spell since we watched the first version of the show, but I don't seem to recall that there was a rampant display of magic where the public would become aware of it... Or question what was going on. I'm sure there were some close calls.

Perhaps because this series is set in Europe there might be more of an acceptance of magical stuff? It's a stretch, but the best guess I've got.

I thought of that, but if so, it's an oversight if the show doesn't at least address the issue of how the public is reacting to all this.

I agree with you once again. A line or two of dialogue would cover that problem nicely.

I have to ask you while we're both on here, do you have a listing for an ep tomorrow night? Our system doesn't show one until the 28th, and it's listed as Episode 11 - not 10, which it should be.

Wikipedia and TV Tango both say episode 10 is scheduled for tomorrow night. That's all I can say.

The Cupid episode was okay, but depressingly heteronormative. It also kind of glossed over that forcing people to start making out with random strangers is basically sexual assault, at least as bad as the sexual harassment Marie was seeking to avenge. They paid lip service to it at the end with Marie apologizing for the people she'd hurt, but it felt like too little, too late. It might not have been so bad if they'd said that Cupid's arrows only worked between people who already shared a mutual attraction, but the whole plot of the episode pretty much revolved around the love they induced being false.

Also, Lysa's skepticism seems to have been switched off since last week. She used the word "magic" with only a brief hesitation, and didn't have any reaction to the revelation that literal gods exist.

Lysa isn't so stubborn as to disbelieve her own experiences, which I appreciate.

Nice ep last night. Good to see background for Mrs. Astolet and a continuation of the connection with Arthur's Camelot.

Yes, of course, as I've said, science is about broadening our understanding of the universe to encompass new data, so the usual fictional portrayal of scientists as closed-minded to new ideas is downright slanderous. But that openness to new ideas needs to be paired with healthy skepticism, to rule out alternative explanations. Lysa acknowledging there are real phenomena she doesn't know about is fine, but going from that to just blithely accepting the existence of a literal Roman god without question is way too abrupt a jump between one episode and the next.

Part 1 of the two part finale wasn't bad, the cartoon gimmicks aside when they were fighting the members of the heavy-metal Serbian band. It ties into the beginning of the series nicely, and I'm looking forward to the finale next week (and the return of Christian Kane).

A nuke in the hands of a 19th century madman! Time for more magic to counter this threat!

Agreed, it shows that he's growing as a character. I can't help but wonder with this newfound realization of where/when he is will result in an updated wardrobe for Vik next season.

Side note: we started re-watching the first Librarians again last night. It's been some time since we binged all four seasons straight through.

I do too, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him in something slightly more modern next year.

After all, Jenkins turned in his armor for something more contemporary.

:D

Well that was an enjoyable conclusion to the first season, though at times it felt just a wee bit rushed. But all in all, I liked it and was pleased that we got a few snippets of the coming season. Merry Brandybuck is Merlin!

I liked that as well, and the fact that Vik managed to get some form of closure before it was all over. And I also liked seeing them get their invites from the Library. All in all, it was a good way to end the season and if they hadn't already been renewed, it would have made a fine ending overall.

But I'm quite glad to know that more is on the way.
