Stone Temple Pilots reunite for tour

All I'm suggesting is that perhaps it's time to admit that we were wrong about them from the get-go — that we treated them unfairly. We can say we're sorry, because STP certainly deserve to be remembered as more than just a throwaway line in a Pavement song. The truth can set you free.

Do you have any idea how long I have waited to read those words

^Sweet words to read indeed!

I was one of the few people back in the day who thought STP was better than Pearl Jam and my friends laughed at me. They all thought they were just a Pearl Jam rip off. I never thought for a second that they sounded like Pearl Jam and was always confused as to why people thought that.

Habs Fan, that is an absolutely BRILLIANT article!

Apart from the bit about them being behind only Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, I completely agree.

Don't get me wrong, talk about those bands and you are listing my favourite rock acts of all time, but STP have a particular magic that elevates them above all of those bands. A diversity not even closely matched by ANY of those bands. All leaders in their field, but STP are playing by different rules entirely. The scope and ambition of all STP records from Purple onwards is breathtaking, whereas most of those other bands from the time found their niche and have stuck to it, or exhausted it and split, or died before they got a chance to really prove themselves long term.

Pearl Jam deserve special congrats though for still pumping out great albums nearly 20 years later, and not self destructing when they had so many chances.

I love the description of Tiny Music as "batshit crazy" Personally I think that is the essential rock album of the 90's, the sound of the whole thing just shimmers, such as shame that thing started to go badly wrong for them then. Although one might argue that if things hadn't started going badly wrong for them, they would never had made the album anyway.

Because, as Habs Fan pointed out, most people only ever heard Plush, and to an undiscerning ear Weiland sounds vaguely like Vedder on that track. Of course, the chordal structure of the song is NOTHING like anything Pearl Jam would ever produce, the opening chords alone pretty much set them apart stylistically from all their piers. But most people don't listen to music, they only hear it. Sad for them.

I agree with you. Although I think Shangri-La Dee Da is STP's best album, Tiny Music is the best album of the 90s. It's also amazing just how different they sound on that album compared to Purple and Core. Is there a band that reinvents itself as much as STP, and are able to keep writing hit song after hit song?

So perhaps it's time we reconsidered STP's place in rock history. And I'm not saying we carve out a spot for them on Mount Rockmore or anything like that, but how about this: Think for a second about those hits I keep mentioning — songs like "Plush," "Creep," "Interstate Love Song," "Big Bang Baby" or "Lady Picture Show." Chances are, they're w-a-a-y better than you remembered them being (if you need a refresher, check out some of their videos). Now think if there's another band in recent memory that was so adept at switching gears or did so with such success. Can you name one? I can't.
Muse...
And i am a fan of STP, i own 4 of their albums, never knew there where 5...
Now i'm gonna order the one i mssing, which is No. 4...

I am in total agreement. SLDD is such a sonic masterpiece. It's the perfect blend of Beatles, Zep, Robert's beautiful melodic bass lines, and Dean's breathtaking chord structure.

No.4 is my fave album, but SLDD is the best one overall. It may sound strange to have a fave and then that not be the best one, but .... I'm just weird like that :vulcan:

You'll probably like No. 4. It's hard rocking, but it also has some beautiful songs that wouldn't be out of place on Shangri-La Dee Da.

I think Queen were that band for 20 years. Now though, I can't think of anyone.

Actually I don't think Muse have reinvented themselves as much as simply bettered themselves with each album. The overall sound on Black Holes and Revelations has got grander and bigger but is not significantly different to the noise they were making when I was watching them at the local pub 10 years ago and the sound on Showbiz.

Until STP reformed though, they were the no.1 rock band on the planet, no doubt about that. Especially when it comes to live performances. Have you got the H.A.A.R.P DVD yet? Bugger me if that isn't the single best live performance I have seen on film, and this from a major Queen fan.

Its amazing cause 10 years ago Muse were playing the same stages at the local pubs in Cornwall as my band, and now they are playing Wembley flipping Stadium and headlining the Reading Festival  More power to em.

No. 4 is a very good album (I like Tiny Music better, but it's my brother's favorite STP album). Has a great mix of loud and heavy (Down) with great melodic songs (Sour Girl).

Well, i ordered it with the new Supergrass album...
Can't find that one in local stores either and it's been out for about 2 weeks...

^ That bombed spectacularly in the UK. Such a shame, a very talented band indeed. Another example of fickle public rather than a poor band though.

Well, I have just bought two tickets to the STP gig in Detroit in June. I am pumped right now!
