Taika Waititi to direct new 'Judge Dredd' movie.

Filming of The Boys has finished, meaning Karl Urban is available. Urban and Waititi previously worked together on Thor Ragnarok...

Yeah, this is likely to be an all new reboot, and as such they'll be going with a new actor as Dredd. But I loved Urban in the role in the 2012 movie, so I'm going to unrealistically hope they get him back even if it's a reboot and not a sequel of that movie.
Wait. What?! There are people who don’t know that Dredd is a comedy?
I mean, with such gritty and realistic storylines like a monkey being elected mayor... ;)
I always liked the Sylvester Stallone version.
Though I do prefer the Karl Urban movie, the Stallone movie is better than a lot of people give it credit for and as cheesy 90s action movies go, it is tier one in that category. Besides, the whole thing of Dredd taking his helmet off aside, it is very faithful to the comics, in many ways, more so than the Urban movie.

I haven't read any of the comics, but from what I know of them, Waititi seems like a perfect fit if they're going to actually go for a more accurate representation of them this time.

No thank you to both Taika Waititi and Drew Pearce (Hobbs & Shaw).
A definite hard No.

What I wrote in the reboot/remake thread in TV & Media...

It's weird, my instinctive reaction was "Oh no he'll make it silly." and then my slightly more considered reaction a minute or so later was "Oh cool he'll make it silly"

I love the movie Dredd, it's a five star film for me, but it does lack the surreal and comedic elements of Mega City One. I've joked many times that if you popped 90% of Dredd and 10% of Stallone's Judge Dredd in a blender you'd have the perfect Dredd film (The 95 film does have a more comic accurate vision of the city, even if it's pretty awful beyond this)

I tend to fluctuate on Waititi a little. I've truly loved some of his films (more people need to see Hunt for the Wilderpeople) but I've found him a little insufferable at times in recent years, but he had can balance the grim and ridiculous halves of Mega City One this could really be something.

I wonder if a lot depends on how well the Rogue Trooper film does, and I also wonder if there's any chance of Urban and Thirlby returning? (unlikely but hope springs eternal)

I sat with the news about Waititi and Dredd last night, and I thought, "Y'know, he could do 'Gaze into the Fist of Dredd!'" (For those who don't know, Dredd puts his fist through the face of the Dark Judge, Judge Fear, in a classic strip from way back in the day by Brian Bolland.)

It strikes me that if you were going to go there, then Bella Ramsey would be an interesting choice for the Judge Child (though, shock, you would have to gender switch the character)
