What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

The five-year mission ended in 2270. TMP takes place in 2273.

It's really no more complicated than that.
Except that the dates given in the official Chronology chronology are quite dubious. They may be official, but that doesn't necessarily make them agree with the canon chronologicl date in the episodes and movies,

Three things.

First, it's quite likely Sisko was ineligible for promotion during the Dominion War due to him being directly responsible for keeping the Bajorans from joining the Federation. (Admiral Whatley said, "I could have your commission for this." Could very well have been a formal reprimand, keeping him from moving upward in rank for a while.)

Second, Sisko was Ross' adjutant during "SACRIFICE OF ANGELS", so he had the authority. (As we've seen elsewhere, position is the deciding factor over rank.)

Third, the plan was Sisko's, so it made sense for him to be the one in charge.

Another issue with Sisko's command is that it's divided between the Defiant and Deep Space Nine.

It makes sense for the narrative in order to center things around the characters. But, if you're looking at it practically within the reality of the show, there probably should have been a separate crew just for the Defiant.

Especially after Deep Space Nine becomes an important strategic position, it doesn't really make sense for Sisko to be light-years away on the Defiant with most of the command staff on some mission, leaving Deep Space Nine to be guarded with a skeleton crew.

To that end, I always found Kira's presence on the Defiant peculiar. Even before the Dominion War, she's a major/colonel in the Bajoran militia going out into deep space on Starfleet missions that have nothing to do with Bajoran interests.

Kira being on the Defiant made sense more often than not. Looking at her appearances on the bridge of the Defiant before the Dominion War...

"THE SEARCH, PART I" - that mission would directly affect Bajor, as the wormhole is in their system.

"PAST TENSE" two-parter - Kira being one of the only direct witnesses to seeing the Founders, plus how a symposium talking about the situation in the Gamma Quadrant also affects Bajor. Almost certainly was invited to the symposium.

"THE DIE IS CAST" - Odo IS a member of the Bajoran security force and under her direct command.

"THE ADVERSARY" - this one is hard to defend.

"STARSHIP DOWN" - also hard to defend, but there may have been some Bajoran interests with the Karemma trade.

"PARADISE LOST" - also hard to defend, but Worf was in command there.

"SONS OF MOGH" - Sisko ordered her to take the Defiant to find out what was going on, plus since it was a situation potentially directly involving the Bajoran system.

"RULES OF ENGAGEMENT" - possibly her experience with Cardassians, since they were escorting a convoy into Cardassian space.

"TRIALS AND TRIBBLE-ATIONS" - they were picking up an Orb. Definitely justified being there.

"FOR THE UNIFORM" - as damaged as the Defiant was, it really was an 'all hands on deck' situation. Plus, she knows the Badlands.

"IN PURGATORY'S SHADOW" - Sisko ordered Kira to take the Defiant into the Gamma Quadrant to see what was going on.

"BY INFERNO'S LIGHT" - this is a no-brainer. The Dominion fleet was threatening Bajor.

"CHILDREN OF TIME" - hard to defend this one.

Out of 14 times, only 4 are hard to defend, with one of those at least having a possibility.

For whatever reason, Kira was the actual official first officer of the Defiant, at least until sometime after Worf came aboard and it got a little cloudier. But we can see this clearly in "The Adversary" when she is the one who gives the second authorization for self-destruct. Not only does she have the authority to do a self-destruct, but she clearly identifies herself to the computer as the first officer.

I think by the third season, when the Defiant was introduced, Sisko had come to respect Kira and appreciate working with a mixed crew of Starfleet and Bajoran personnel on the station, so when he convinced Starfleet to give him the Defiant, he must have also convinced them to let him keep the same command structure on both the station and the ship.

I agree with that reasoning, and Kira did use her authorization code as First Officer in that episode.

So that brings it down only 2 episodes that are hard to defend.

Thank you for pointing that out.

Training of a high level operative in Federation structures. Seeking to see what actual problems there are for the new prospective members of the Federation. Seeing what adjustments would have to be made.

In other words the entire Deep Space 9, was a science experiment.

And not just in biology/sophantology but political science as well.

I like season 1 and 2 Dr Bashir. I know some think he was annoying or to brash but I liked that about him. It gave the character a place to grow from as he became more experienced.
I never had a problem with him but when I rewatched "Dax" recently he put me off. I could see others having that problem. I liked the friendships he grew with the others. He might be my favourite DS9 character....hmmm.

It should actually be WHY IS EARLY TNG SOmetimes BAD?

It's not. TNG seasons 1 and 2 are vastly underrated. In fact, season 2 is my favorite season of the show. They had found their footing as a cast, but were still focused on telling good, solid, and often weird sci-fi stories.

I know I am in the minority here, but I think Michael Piller is quite overrated as showrunner. TNG got very bland under his leadership, and DS9 only really started to take off once he backed away and Ira Steven Behr took over. For TNG, I much preferrred Maurice Hurley as showrunner to Piller.

Agreed, I love the "space is weird" vibes of early TNG, although, I slightly prefer Season 1.
