The Global Football Thread

Next week, the inaugural Northern Super League season is set to kick off in Canada:

Having hosted the FIFA Women's World Cup back in 2015, it has been long overdue for there to be a Canadian professional women's soccer league. But, better late than never, I suppose!

Six teams are set to take part: Vancouver Rise FC; Calgary Wild FC; AFC Toronto; Ottawa Rapid FC; les Roses de Montréal, and Halifax Tides FC.

In Canada, the English-language broadcast rights are held by CBC and TSN; the French-language broadcasts are to be on Radio-Canada and RDS. Meanwhile, ESPN+ are set to stream a number of NSL games south of the border.

The first game is set for this Wednesday, as the Rise host the Wild at BC Place Stadium (home of Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps FC). A few days later, AFC Toronto host les Roses for both teams' inaugural game at BMO Field (home of MLS' Toronto FC).

Not sure yet how, of if, any NSL clubs might later qualify for the CONCACAF W Champions Cup, though.

-----

EDIT: Here are more details on how to watch the games in Canada, in the U.S., and in other parts of the world.

The first two NSL games are in the books.

First up was the game at BC Place, between the Rise and the Wild:

Earlier today, AFC Toronto and les Roses got their respective campaigns started at BMO Field:

In both cases, these home venues were one-time deals... for now, at least.

For the rest of the season - future announcements notwithstanding - the Rise's remaining home games will be at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, BC; whereas AFC Toronto are to play their remaining home games at York Lions Stadium.

Next week will be the first "full" slate of matches, to include the inaugural games for both the Tides and Rapid FC.

EDIT: And for anyone who wants to practice their (Canadian) French, there is coverage of the league in that language - which is mostly focused on les Roses - on the Radio-Canada Sports YouTube channel:

Still undefeated this year in league play, and at the top of the standings in MLS Next Pro despite losing our captain due to a career ending injury.

I know this is buried in some thousand pages of the World Cup host agreement, but after JD Vance makes a comment that basically says "don 't overstay your welcome," is there a way to pull the chute on as many games based in the US as possible & move them to Canada & Mexico?

Yes, MAGA will spin it to their benefit, but FIFA has to be somewhat concerned about the safety of fans.

It would be great to be able to believe FIFA gives a damn about fans, but sadly their only priority is money and how to get craploads of it. Fans are beside the point.

Gotta love Palace winning the FA Cup. Proper club with great fans finally win their first trophy. Brilliant stuff.

But if people don't go and tickets don't sell, doesn't that affect their bottom line?

American fans will make up for the numbers, even if the rest of the world decided to no-show, which they won't (Qatar, anyone?) . MLS is now the second highest attended league in the world. This isn't 1994, and even then world cup attendance in the states was on average almost 70,000 per match. No one has come close to that number.

I'm hate how this idiotic regime is handling things, but sour grapes aren't going to prevent the US part of this world cup from being a success. Now the US Men's TEAM on the other hand. we're probably doomed.

Man Utd's train wreck of a season just gets worse (or better depending on your view) all the time!

Shame Southampton didn't equal our record, but we stayed up and frankly that was the most important thing!

:p

The money would have been nice but United had no business being in the Champion's league (neither do Spurs, of course, but anyway). One can only hope that serious changes will be made in the off season. The parasites clearing off would be a good start, but hell will be under a thousand kilometres of ice before that will happen.

Losing to effing Tottenham four times in a season is just pitiful. The only upside is Ange Postecoglou having some success. He's nowhere near as bad a manager as some want to believe, but Spurs are a basket case. Not a total joke like present-day United, but pretty ordinary.

Oh, well. At least Marina Sirtis will be happy with this result. :p

I realise it takes time to fix a broken club, but weirdly whatever you say about the Glazers, the club had more success while they were 100% in charge than it's had since Ratcliffe/ INEOS has been running the footballing side of things! (I appreciate this is likely down more to luck than judgement!).

I genuinely can't decide if sticking with Amorim is a smart/stupid move. I just hope they don't do what they did last year, sign a bunch of players specifically to play Amorim's system then sack him in November!

It's about expectation of course. I was talking to my friend who's a Brighton fan (I'm a Derby fan in case it isn't obvious) and we pretty much agreed we'd bite your hand off if you offered us just half the number of trophies United have won since Ferguson left in the next 12 years! (by my count 7)

Their performance is worse IMO, Considering what they spent (even taking inflation into account) and the overall quality of the PL compared with back then.

As a Liverpool fan with plenty of Spurs fans in the family, last night's game was satisfying, even if Spurs should not be anywhere near UCL football. Still, considering Liverpool's own lengthy spell without much success, I do have sympathy for Utd fans. I have to wonder what might happen if Fernandes decides he's had enough, and wants to play on a higher stage. He's dragged Utd along at times, and might be their only truly world class player.

I have no sympathy. Hearing united fans on talk sport etc saying they deserve better is crazy, no set of fans deserve success. The only fans that deserve better are the likes of bury who lost their club.

Come On You Spurs! :techman:

Sure, their domestic record this season wasn't great, but there were a ton of injuries (including to 3/4 of their starting defenders and goalkeeper) and by the time everyone started coming back any real chance at a Champions League position was pretty much gone, so I don't blame them for prioritizing the Europa League. And it paid off.
