What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Not to put salt in the wound, but didn't they show a similar interior for the Enterprise before we got SNW?

I love the Disco shuttle deck, though.
I think one has to be a little careful with Short Treks canonicity.

"Canon is only important to certain people because they have to cling to their knowledge of the minutia. Open your mind! Be a Star Trek fan and open your mind and say, "Where does Star Trek want to take me now."

-- Leonard Nimoy

I love this quote from Nimoy. Same time, I'm not sure if he'd approve of just constantly mining nostalgia.

"Where does Star Trek want to take me now?"

Apparently nowhere but the past.

Starfleet Academy is look forward looking ground in both terms of continuity and content, so I'm not sure how that applies. I will grant that Picard seasons 2 and especially 3 went overboard on the nostalgia, but I'm not going to condemn the entire current output of the franchise on that.

Otherwise, for me complaints of "fan service" in modern Trek tend to just boil down to people complaining that they're putting Star Trek in their Star Trek. The more history a franchise has to draw from, they're more they're going to draw from and expand it. Seems pretty basic to me. At this point, to my mind the overuse of the phrase "fan service" has put it in the same category as the phrase "canon violation".

So much so that we're getting the Voyager EMH. :p
Why not? He won't be the same happy-go-lucky hologram that we knew back in the day. There is a new story to tell with him. It won't be rehash of the character's previous experiences. It won't be the, "hey look everybody it's Moriarty" experience from Picard. Once again, you're complaining that they're putting Star Trek in your Star Trek.

My Star Trek was over twenty years ago. What I'm complaining about is the constant need to lean on the franchise's history instead of try something new. I mean, even going to the 32nd century, we still got tons of nostalgia. It is like a security blanket that they can't let go of.

Like anything else that is oversaturated, it wore out its welcome for me.

And yet he complained about the most forward moving Star Trek movie he was involved in for the rest of his life.

He also gave us Klingons flying around in cloaked bird painted space ships.

Yeah, "Edward" is one of the best Short Treks, but parts of it are best ignored in the way the absolute goofiest parts of a LD episode should be ignored as rigid canon.

I will also point out that everybody has a line. Try changing Spock's Mom's name to Sue Ellen. Really, how many people know the name of a character who only appeared in one episode live action, one cartoon, and one movie? Surely that's minutia.

Move on from what exactly? Talking about Star Trek? It is a hobby. Sorry if what I say isn't permitted.
If you say so. If something ended for me over 20 years ago, I certainly wouldn't spend my time talking about it on internet message boards. That sounds less like a hobby and more like an unhealthy obsession to me. I'm moving on from this conversation.
