What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

It's easiest to compare Starfleet to the US Coast Guard which, yes... is military. But also, when at not at war... it's primary function is NOT warfare or military matters. More precisely, Starfleet is like all the US "uniformed services" rolled into one organization. It's the Coast Guard. It's NOAA. It's the Public Health Corps. and yeah, it's the Army and Navy as well. It's a particularly terrible army, but it is one. It's almost as if combat isn't its primary function, and they tend to use repurposed starship personnel from other disciplines when faced with a combat situation...

...almost as if, its primary function is not warfare. Odd.
unless you're in the CG Auxiliary, if you violate regulations in the USCG, you are subject to court martial. It's always military and ready to fly under Naval orders at moment's notice.

The US hasn't been in a declared war since 1945, but that does not mean the CG hasn't been involved in conflicts. They don't lock up the ammo and lower the ensign until someone declares war.

Roddenberry had some really unworkable ideas for TNG. The show didn't free itself from those ideas, which were inconsistent with TOS, TAS and the movies, until he kicked the bucket. Once he was out of the picture, writers and directors immediately set to fixing things, and you can see it in the demeanor of the show.

it's easier to just handwave or outright ignore those few lines and accept the bulk of the facts the shows present from TOS onward. Same as with a couple of throwaway lines about money

the preponderance of information in the series is that Starfleet is military. It is modeled after a navy. Roddenberry was high off his own supply by the time TNG rolled around, and still hurt that he'd lost virually any influence over the movies, where from TWOK onward, Startleet was shown in an even more martial light.
While that may be true BtS (Behind the Scenes).
His influence as creator over the concept of the series & the fans isn't gone.

And StarFleet isn't a traditional pure modern Western Military that you would perceive it to be.

It's more than that. That's why I call it a "Hybrid Service Organization"

Military is part of the responsibilty / Duty. That can never be removed or taken away.

But it's not a primary goal or objective, it's a secondary duty/responsibility.

That's why when Trek fans search up "StarFleet" in Memory Alpha.
Starfleet was the deep space exploratory and defense service maintained by the United Federation of Planets. Its principal functions included the advancement of Federation knowledge about the galaxy and its inhabitants, and knowledge of all areas of study, both scientific and non-scientific. Starfleet's ancillary duties included the defense of the Federation and the facilitation of Federation diplomacy.
That's why I call it the "Hybrid Service Organization".

It does more than just one function that a modern Western Miltiary would do with a different focus as well.

That is why ad campaigns advertise such things, because it may never have occurred to some would-be recruits that they could do so. It's a little like assuming that because someone goes to college on a sports scholarship, that they'll mostly/only be playing sports, but many athletes pursue business and science degrees, even as some hope to get a sports career, while others use their talent to open up opportunities to study what they really hope to pursue.

Yeah, that was my point. It's on par with civilian colleges and universities.
I know that. StarFleet Academy teaches many things beyond what a Traditional Military Academy would teach as well.

You can. I don't think too many others are taking a single line over the preponderance of evidence to the contrary.
But you haven't convinced me and others who agree with me in the fandom otherwise.

So shall we agree to disagree and move on?

Here's Lucy did a two-part episode set at the Air Force Academy, and it was mentioned in the episode that recruits could take all sorts of courses.

And you're interested in getting into
the Air Force Academy. Are you, Craig?

Well, sir um...

Craig is still going to high school. He
doesn't graduate for another year yet.

I see, but when the time comes, I
take that you would like to be a cadet.

Well, I thought...

Well, that depends on what
the academy has to offer.

Craig may want to
go to a university.

- Oh! The Air Force Academy is
a university, ma'am.
- Oh!

Oh yes! We offer degrees in
any one of 28 different majors,

everything from astrophysics to
biochemistry and engineering to zoology.

Well, now isn't that wonderful.
