Why was the USS Enterprise F decommissioned so early?

As already mentioned, "we don't know". The ship was included as a fun nod to STO fans, the dozens of us out there. I kind of wish Matalas didn't even bother. Not because I feel like there was some grave injustice done to the ship, rather that people are so quick to complain about literally anything that he shouldn't have even bothered.

The background suggests that the ship was badly damaged to the point of being essentially unrepairable.

I'm fine with that. I think there could be a number of reasonable explanations, with a few that work with each other. Yeah, I can see the ship having encountered some kind of catastrophic damage. Perhaps also couple with that potentially finding a fatal flaw in the Odyssey design. As someone else noted, it's also quite possible that Starfleet decided to move away from the huge, multi-role vessels like that and focus on smaller, more purpose built ships.

I've thought of a darker reason that could ALSO tie into all of those. If we take that the E-F sustained some catastrophic damage that made it damn near unrepairable... the crew may not have survived that. That may have been a situation of the ship not being totally destroyed, as in it didn't explode, it's still there... but all hands lost. I could absolutely see Starfleet deciding to shelve it after that. They aren't hurting for ships. Retiring a badly damaged ship that they put on life support long enough to fly through some fireworks and then scrapping it really isn't a big deal, they can just build a new ship.

Starfleet DOES seem to be going through something of a "modernization" by 2401. There are quite a few ships we see that are stated to be brand new designs... the Inquiry, the Stargazer, the Excelsior II, the Constitution III. Starfleet is seemingly pumping out a whole-ass new fleet by 2401. Even though the Odyssey isn't exactly an old ship, it may be more indicative of the previous generation of Starfleet vessels, so put a string of things together and it's entirely reasonable for a 15 year old ship to be getting decommissioned.

No, that's not true. Matalas should have bothered. But what he should have bothered to do was to show the Enterprise-E getting decommissioned, rather than a ship that only less than 1% of the Star Trek fanbase even knew existed. Instead of catering to the 100% of Trek fans who saw the TNG films and might have liked some closure to the fate of the Enterprise-E, Matalas instead chose to make some lame joke at Worf's expense, and provide zero information as to what actually happened to the ship. Just my opinion, of course.

That's fair, although I think the usual suspects would have had an absolute meltdown over "fan service" and "nostalgia" if they included both the Enterprise-E AND -D.

Throwing the F in as an Ody, which yeah... a good chunk of the fanbase has really no connection with, and even probably most STO players don't have much (been playing since Beta... it's... a ship that exists? I don't particularly like it or dislike it? It was neat to see it, along with the other STO ships that show up.)... sorry for the tangent, but by NOT using the E, it doesn't steal any of the thunder away from bringing out the D.

I can't look into alternate timelines, but i'm pretty sure that if they used the Enterprise-E there, alot of people would have been losing their minds if it just got decommissioned and then we move onto the D. There would have a core of people furious that they used the D over the E.

So... Matalas made a gamble on adding in a fun nod to STO, but... we aren't allowed to have any fun.

I don't think people would be grabbing their pitchforks as much as you think they would.

You are welcome to enjoy the F's cameo as much as you like. For me, I think the E would have worked better. Not to mention that STO fans would see their beloved ship for about ten seconds before it got destroyed. Great choice, Terry. Good job.

I would like for them to have no Enterprise F if they weren't going to make use of it all, which made zero sense.

Of course, changing the Titan-A to the Enterprise was another of Matalas's questionable choices, but that's another story.

I don't understand that one that all.

"Hey, good job ship and crew that saved the Federation. Here, have quite literally the greatest honor a Federation starship can possible have."

Fans: "ARGLE BARGLE FOR SOME REASON!"

You mean you don't understand why they had to rename the Titan-A the Enterprise-G? Because you seem to think that for some reason, changing a ship's name to 'Enterprise' is supposed to be some kind of 'reward' for its crew? At this point, all that would mean is that in five years Starfleet is going to decommission or scuttle it.

I thought that decision came from higher up? That the ship was originally supposed to be the Picard.

Which made a lot more sense than slapping another letter on the Enterprise name.

Based on how they describe the process used to construct the Titan-A, I get the feeling it was a stop-gap ship. The Titan was damaged and Starfleet wanted to replace it. But the next design specifically to replace the Luna-class wasn't ready yet (Starfleet likely having ordered a new Titan already). So to give Riker and his crew a legacy ship, they build a Neo-Constitution-class starship using parts from the Titan. Several years pass. Titan-A is coming out of another refit with Captain Shaw. Picard and Riker "divert its mission". Titan-A and the Enterprise-D crews manage to save the Federation from the Borg and rogue Changelings. The starship that was going to replace the Luna-class will be coming online soon, so the Titan-A gets a name change to USS Enterprise-G since the Enterprise-F was retired early (meaning they don't have a replacement anywhere near ready), while the Titan legacy will go to a new built USS Titan-B soon. So the Titan gets a new ship to maintain its legacy, while the Enterprise gets to keep a stop-gap ship as its legacy (again, the Enterprise-A was a stop-gap ship). It is possible they will reconstruct the Enterprise-F to get all its systems working again (which would fit the STO launch year of 2409?), but that might take a while. Or they might see what the next major starship designed for exploration is, and eventually build an Enterprise-H out of it.

Everything, like, everything in Star Trek suggests that "Enterprise" is a damn near worshipped name in Starfleet. Yes, having your ship be named Enterprise is quite literally the highest honor the Federation could possibly bestow.

What a great way to honor the Titan...... throwing its name and legacy in the trash in favour of an entirely different ship!

I just find this concept completely alien. Why would getting the honor of being renamed as the most legendary vessel in Starfleet and becoming the flagship of the entire Federation be "throwing its name and legacy in the trash"? The Titan still did all the things it did, nobody will just forget that. It's not like Titan will not be erased from the record and people will spit on the name.

They will think, "Oh man, the Titan was SO badass, it got elevated to Enterprise!"

It's like, if a soldier was awarded some medal for bravery, but then later on was awarded the medal of honor... would the soldier just throw the other medal in the trash? Like, "whelp, this piece of junk is worthless now, I don't even want this stupid highest honor I can possibly get."

It's nonsense.

I could be on board for most of that. Not so much the bit about the Odyssey at the end. STO is explicitly some kind of alternate timeline.

I don't think it even needs to be quite as involved. Titan was essentially destroyed. Starfleet was in the process of designing a Constitution III, where I would diverge is probably that the Connie-III WAS intended to replace the Luna-Class, to the extent that existing Luna-Class ships may (or may not) be refit into the Connie-III... It was inspired by the old Shangri-La Class, but it was built off the Luna platform.

There was probably an existing construction order for a Constitution-III, possibly even construction started, but they were able to pull enough from Titan to make it worth it to salvage. I think it was probably largely up to Riker for the name... they COULD have just... called it Titan. No bloody A. But Riker knew he was moving on from the ship, so they slapped an "A" on it.

I don't think Starfleet was planning on building a new Enterprise quickly. That just kind of happened.

I will say though, narratively as much as i'm totally ok with the Titan becoming Enterprise, I do actually think it would have worked better as USS Picard.

It's more like if a soldier gets awarded a medal for bravery, but to accept the award, he has to change his last name to something completely different.
