Phonetic spelling is cool.
I always hated that too myself.
It was on Kenner action figure packaging when I was a child (and still is on Vintage Collection cardbacks to mimic the original 1978-85 cardbacks), but aside from "Artoo" I never type the phonetic spellings in any way.
"See Threepio" looks fine on an action figure package. On anything else, a lot less so.
The Last Jedi is a work of art and will be remembered as the best of the sequel trilogy. It's the only movie to actually try to be about something other than Star Wars.
Also it was worth losing the old EU for Andor season 1. It was going downhill after The New Jedi Order storyline anyways.

You could say it was a work of art in STAR WARS terms, given this was the first time theaters warned ticket-buyers that there was a key scene deliberately played in total silence.
Like that other sci-fi movie people were never warned about back in the day.

I will agree that The Last Jedi was the best of the sequel trilogy. I've always felt that the stuff with Luke and Rey was Empire Strikes Back level material. The scene where Luke calls out the Jedi Order for being responsible for its own destruction was a stand-up and cheer moment for me. It's something I've always thought was evident ever since watching the prequel trilogy, but for it to become right out and said in canon, by Luke Skywalker himself no less, was a saga capping moment for me. After that and Luke's scene with Kylo, the rest of the sequel trilogy was just about tying up the remaining story threads.
I really, really like TLJ, but I think the space horse stuff and the "space ships slow down when they lose power" plot points drag it down a bit. To be clear I think the Finn/Rose story needed to happen including going to the casino, but the already long movie didn't need the space horse action scene or the sweeping kid.
Also the ships that lost power should have just been blown up because they lost shields and so even long range lasers could now destroy them, a solution which literally fixes that whole physics destroying plot point perfectly while not effecting any other part of the story in a negative way.
All that said I still consider TLJ a top tier film, justbut one with a few nagging problems.

I always took that as distinguishing between a mere designation and an actual name. They did a similar thing with the clones, and even made a point with it when it came to Fives. There's an important difference between calling him "CT-5555" and "Fives". The latter conveys personhood, while the former strips it away. Same for Artoo, Threepio, Chopper, and so on.
I'd say the decline started way before that. Indeed, if we're just talking about the mainline novels (comics & video games are a whole other story), pretty much everything that followed on from the Heir trilogy ranged from mediocre to pretty dire. Indeed, most everything that wasn't written by Zahn or Stackpole just didn't seem to grasp what Star Wars was about (and even Zahn has always leaned a little too much towards sci-fi for my preference.)
I will add that there are some people that sing the praises of the Clone Wars novels (the ones that came out between AotC & RotS, nothing to do with the later series which ignored them entirely.) I'd already given up reading them by that point so I can't speak to that personally, but I don't see anywhere near as many people going to bat for the likes of the Corellian, Black Fleet, or Academy trilogies, so there may be something more to them.
Yes, I know people rave about the Darth Bane Trilogy too, but I read those books and I swear not a single detail from them has stuck in my memory. I don't recall feeling particularly invested in either the characters or the story. Make of that what you will.
All that said; I don't think we've "lost" any of this stuff, good or bad. It's all still there. They still reprint them. They just stopped adding to the pile.

I remember enjoying the Bane trilogy when I read it, though I agree not much of it has really stuck with me all these years later.
Here we go for the controversial opinion thread: The Jedi are the Real Antagonists.
While I don't agree with the whole antagonist, as they don't serve that purpose in the story, the Jedi have some flaws that have only gotten worse with the PT. It's not a great take to say "Jedi = teh sux." Because that's too simplistic of a viewpoint.
