Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

Rumours are (popbitch) that Ncuti wants out because it’s affecting his earning potential as an actor, and is buying out his contract with Bad Wolf for Who, possibly hence the reshoots.

How would it be affecting his earning potential? I would think being the lead on a high like Doctor Who would raise his profile and get him more money. Or is he saying it's taking away time from potential better paying gigs?

Apparently he had to turn down a perfume brand (for why I do not know…) due to something to do with his Who contract, and the payday for that was many times the Who payday. The only assumption I can make was perhaps it was either not in keeping with the image in some way (hard to imagine these days as being something that matters) or some kind of ‘brand ambassador’ role which might become a snafu in relation to the BBC and advertising. (Aside from Claudia Winkleman and H&S I can’t think of any Beeb faces who have strong brand sponsorship type endorsements. Famously the Top Gear boys weren’t allowed any, as they later joked about by offering to be paid money to stop wearing Omega watches for example.)

Truth is, his profile was on the up before Who, and has possibly been *damaged* by it in a bunch of ways. (One not oft mentioned is the AI images fracas with his face on possibly) Who helped make Tennant and Smith, but that was a different time — it’s not what it was in that regard. Capaldi didn’t need it to work for him and his career, and Jodie is pretty much the first modern Doctor — certainly the first who wasn’t a pre-existing fan like Tennant — to go directly to Big Finish without passing go.

I am quite curious about the ‘big name’ who was alleged to have been contracted and paid off when Ncuti was brought in instead. That one sounds like a heck of a thing, if true — especially now Ncuti is alleged to be leaving early, and was barely in a chunk of his first season. Also the rumours that Tennant had his episodes cut down from an alleged eight to three, and that some of the first Gatwa season was written for him and Donna is also terribly interesting.

(If anyone wonders why I usually do surname for Capaldi and first name for Jodie, incidentally, it’s because usually we do surname, but ‘The Whittaker Era’ is a different thing in Who already. I differentiate Tom and Colin as Baker The First and Baker The Second because it’s fun, and Capaldi isn’t the most famous Peter to have been the Doctor. XD I haven’t decided whether to go with Ncuti Era or Gatwa era yet, but probably Gatwa era as is usual.)

Are those rumors of the same "Eccleston won't do anymore DW for BF because RTD is now in charge of all of Who" kind?

I think that was more supposition, based on things like how/when his other big finish run ended. Didn’t he put a video out saying he was off for a bit?

There’s the Rose reunion they announced for the NuWho 20th. I wonder when it was recorded or if he’s back in the studio for it.

I hadn't heard any rumours that a big name was cast before Ncuti, they had someone who was a clear favourite but there was no indication it was a big name or that they were actually contracted

It’s been coming up on various YT livestream chats. Could be stuff and air, but that’s the thing with rumours. It’s not beyond plausibility. Years back there was a Bond contracted and paid off when Moore did another after all, and Brosnan was all but finished signing up when they shifted it to Tim. Billy Dee Williams was paid not to be two-face as well, in the nineties.

Here we go with all the BS and stories running rampant.

The Sun is running with the story that Ncuti is 'poised' to quit and that the show is facing the axe. The BBC have denied the latter, maintaining that no decision will be made until series two transmits.

Not too long ago, a member of the Chris Morris fan forum 'Cooked and Bombd', Binro, uploaded a detailed series of posts claiming the BBC had quietly axed the show and can't afford to continue it without a backer, Ncuti was gone etc, as well as a few series two spoiler claims.

I would pay much closer attention to DW Filming Locations twitter/X

Disney couldn't bother having any sort of presence at Gallifrey One, the biggest Doctor Who convention on the planet, even though they're held in LA. (They were there last year though.)

James Brolin, on Octopussy.

Because NBC loved the publicity around Brosnan and Bond and decided they wanted a fifth season of Remington Steele to capitalize on all that. While that fifth season wasn't worth it, imho, and Brosnan did a lot of garbage work in the early 90s, in the end it worked out for the best for both Dalton and Brosnan.

Billy Dee Williams was paid not to be two-face as well, in the nineties.
And Marlon Wayans got paid to not be Robin, as well, and he still receives residual checks.

Had no idea about the Not-Robin.
If true about Who, I do wonder if it will ever come to light. (I also wonder if there was a Capaldi/Marshall regen filmed, but then we got the emergency special that was TUAT and Jodie instead. But that’s more an idle thought than real speculation.)
