I hadn't heard any rumours that a big name was cast before Ncuti, they had someone who was a clear favourite but there was no indication it was a big name or that they were actually contracted

Because NBC loved the publicity around Brosnan and Bond and decided they wanted a fifth season of Remington Steele to capitalize on all that. While that fifth season wasn't worth it, imho, and Brosnan did a lot of garbage work in the early 90s, in the end it worked out for the best for both Dalton and Brosnan.and Brosnan was all but finished signing up when they shifted it to Tim.
And Marlon Wayans got paid to not be Robin, as well, and he still receives residual checks.Billy Dee Williams was paid not to be two-face as well, in the nineties.
