"Masters of the Universe" Film in Development (Again)

ScarJo was arguably a big name by the time she played Black Widow, having appeared in a couple of Woody Allen movies (including Match Point), the Island, Lost in Translation and the Prestige. Probably bigger than Ruffalo or Norton IMO.

Clooney was unproven as a film star though, a bit like Bruce Willis at the time of Die Hard. Kilmer had been around for some time but mostly as a supporting or team player (Top Gun, the aforesaid Tombstone) and few of his films where he headlined were big hits (Willow, Thunderheart, Kill Me Again, The Doors). He wasn’t a Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson, for example.

Good call on ScarJo - indeed, Gwyneth Paltrow was also probably a bigger name at the time of IM than many of the male MCU stars.

FYI: Scarlett Johansson does NOT like being called "ScarJo".

She takes her last name seriously (She took it seriously enough to go on the TV show Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr. to find out more about it.)

Though, let's face it, nobody, not even Affleck, was a Tom Cruise or Mel Gibson when they got the lead in a superhero film.

Villains and other supporting roles, of course, are another story. Brando and Nicholson were arguably the biggest stars on the planet when they played in Superman and Batman.

I wonder what that parallel universe where Cruise played Iron Man worked out like?

It’s interesting how often that template of little-known or lesser-known actor as the hero, surrounded by better-known actors as villains & supporting roles was followed in superhero films. Though it’s become less prevalent lately, partly due to better-known actors being less embarrassed about playing the lead and also because the genre has been successful enough to allow the studios to cast lesser-known actors, who aren’t box-office draws, in the supporting roles of when they find it appropriate.

If you think about it, it goes all the way back to 1966, when West and Ward were unknowns playing against people like Cesar Romero and Burgess Meredith and it was considered a success. So having it continue isn't terribly surprising, especially after Reeve/Brando/Hackman and even Keaton/Nicholson (though "Mr Mom" wasn't truly an unknown)

Keaton was playing against type (He'd just gotten off Beetlejuice.)

That’s a good call. I think most people were interested in Blade on the basis of it being a new action movie with Wesley Snipes (he was still a draw then) rather than it being a comicbook movie.

i mena, i have always loved the lundgren film, and as an adult kind of appreciate that it wasn't just an origin story, as different as it was from the cartoon. but this "reskinned superman" idea seems a bit daft...
