I'll save "Family." Do I ever love this one. These days, of course. Back in the 90's, I hated it and found it so boring. As an adult, it was a such a delightful rediscovery. I especially love the story with Worf and his parents, I'm glad we got to spend some time with those relationships.

Saving "Journey to Babel," the episode that brought us two of Trek's favorite minor characters, Sarek and Amanda. The pair have now had, what? four incarnations? But imo no one will ever really replace Mark Lenard and Miss Jane Wyatt. The conflict between Spock and his father, and the conflict between Spock and his duty, are both well-drawn, and Kirk proves himself to be the best imaginable friend. And my boy McCoy finally gets the last word, and is quite understandably smug about it.

This time, I'm saving just a personal favorite of mine (and perhaps a bit of a guilty pleasure), TNG's Parallels.

Always liked those different realities, and how they progressively got farther and farther removed from Worf's 'standard reality' (of course this was also for narrative reasons. Had his first shifted reality been the final one, it would've been immediately obvious he had shifted realities). Sometimes I wonder how weird they could have gotten hadn't he found a solution ....

It's probably recency bias - because I've just watched it - but I'm saving (70) TNG: “Cause And Effect”. I love that it's mostly centred on Crusher, and that it is rather creepy/chilling (acting, direction/camera work, music etc.). And to top it off, the time loops never get boring!
(The only downside is Crusher's hamfisted way of breaking her glass in the second loop that we see)

It's not about the universe, it's really about our looking at ourselves vs our prehistoric days.

“Mirror, Mirror”, TOS Season 2

In some ways, TOS has aged the best despite all its sequels, even though TOS has also dated horridly in others. So for where it holds up, it's so much the better (isn't the latter half of that something Khan said?)

The story's situation set up is surely simple enough, and thankfully there's a convenient plot device lightning up the set, in order for the story's reason to be made. And the thing is, the story is so focused on the evil people that the plot setup and how they return did get overlooked (GRR!!) but it still doesn't take one out of the episode.

The contrast between the main universe and this alternate one is of definite interest, begging questions to a point as to how this evil universe took place (Two possibilities easily exist)? But even that is as secondary to other issues as how the crew get back to their proper universe, the Tantalus machine (nice callback, but it's amazing how Marlena doesn't bleep out Sulu - as if the audience is too dumb to realize he's not our Sulu or something and, yes, this story oversimplifies so much BECAUSE of that), why it's merely a mirror universe as if only two will exist (this ain't antimatter, or else they all would have exploded and there'd be no more show - in either universe. Also, don't try imagining that 'cause it's gross.)

Even a mention of Pike sweetens the plot.

The characters are what make this story. Not just The Big Three, which whets the appetite for more. More we don't get because, by this point in season 2, it's always about The Big Three.

Dang, that's two quotes from two different stories of one different series entirely, for which only one of those has direct relevance to my next save:

The concept of technology to replace biological organs, cybernetic equipment, started out indirectly via "Frankenstein" (reanimating a corpse made from bits of other corpses, eww, and for which no actor doing the movie will have wanted to corpse because laughing out loud during filming of a scene was more expensive than it is today. But there I go digressing all over the rug again) has been around for a while, and Doctor Who almost got it right, but TNG just polishes up the idea so impressively - complete with Locutus with a cat toy glued to his headgear - that nothing's come close to beating it since. Well, the Borg anyway, there are tons of laser cat toys in dollar bin buckets at even supermarkets, and those are great until Tiddles and Mittens and Fluffy and Spot and all six other cats you own get bored of it. Which is good because those little batteries need to get replaced fast...

On a macro level, Trek's exploration of the human condition rarely got bigger: the Borg were always a po-faced parody of the Federation. Both the Collective and Federation have similar mission statements, to seek out new life forms, to work together and be stronger than the sum of its parts, raising the quality of life for all within its systems, but the Borg took a fork in the road and made two-pronged turn. The first is losing one's self in the transformation - what makes a being special at individual level. The second, stemming in part from the first, was a misguided belief in obtaining perfection and now the Borg have no concept of individuality, how people can still work together, and a slew of other little things that really can add up. Actually, there are more prongs, but thinking into too much before one's breakfast Metamucil and prune juice covering that bowl of shredded bran cubes isn't always healthy either. This is definitely Picard's story as, in part two, we see Picard - of all people - shed his first tear in the story, and this is the same incredible inedible Picard that stood up against lots of beings and situations. So this already is huge.

On a micro level, we see Riker terrified of giving up his role as second-in-command to a shiny new young hotshot, who was just as impetuous as he was, or so we're led to believe but I bet she wasn't siding with anyone like Admiral Pressman at the time either. We see scene after scene of these two playing out dialogue that would otherwise amount to a soap opera, and yet it all fits TBOBW so smoothly. More on this later.

Admiral Hansen was played by George Murdock, renowned character actor for multiple decades, since the 1960s. How he and the show handle the idea of "May to December" relationship when he, the December, has googly eyes for Shelby (the May or, rather, Clearly Will Not) is a bizarre but brief segue considering this is the same Picard who's been clinical about human procreation up to this point. TNG never really was consistent, what with Riker going after everyone in sight so it's odd that only Picard is so technical and austere and all and what the heck does that have to do with this story? Apart from the Borg using another mean to increase its population, of course.

It's almost as unexpected as Yar's death, seeing another command figure leaving the ship, even if this is a season finale and not mid-year spectacle that's far more unexpected. Whether I mean Riker in terms of commanding another ship to go be briskly BBQed by the Borg by part two, or Picard in terms of being Borgified directly because Patrick Stewart's contract was said to be expiring and nobody knew at the time if he was going to vamoose, and likely would have had the series reverted to season 1's more infamous hokery. Naturally, Picard is returned (pt 2's role and plot reversal is phenomenonally good and Unix sleep mode being the solution is first rate clever, even if the Mars permitter group of three teensy-weensy ships are no match for a determined gnat, never mind a Borg cube) and Picard is left to ponder, which then leads into "Family" - another transcending episode...

A little over the top, since the Borg weren't consciously evil - they just want to elevate the quality of life for others. They aren't proceeding to destroy Earth either, just to assimilate all the people as shiny new drones. It's not quite a shotgun wedding, nobody would elope either, and nobody wants to see that honeymoon either. All those cropped foreheads, missing set pieces, missing credits text, it's the sort of rubbish that too many cropped shows on DVDs had to endure. Never mind what it looks like on a 60" screen when it looks bad enough as a 8" window inside a browser on a 27" monitor. Plus, I loved Geordi's crewcut/flattop style hair and that's been chopped off along with everyone else's. Looks ridiculous. Whine whine whine whine whine!!!

This may be the episode I have rewatched the most in the entire franchise. (And I have seen every episode of TOS - ENT at least 8 times.)

It is fantastic fun. As a Trekkie and a Bond fan, this just makes me smile from beginning to end.

And the best part? It's a 'holodeck gone wrong' without it ACTUALLY going wrong! Pure genius!

The treaty of Algernon deftly explains why the Federation would not pursue cloaking technologies. There's a parallel to our world in here somewhere, or an inverse perhaps, which was probably easier to guess back in 1994.

But would Picard's straightforwardness really prevent a bigger catastrophe? Perhaps. It's a shame we don't see a follow-up, or if Sirol had called in reinforcements while waiting as it's clear the Romulans are pokering up and chessing around, as usual.

Dipping down to the bottom of the list for an ENT standout, "Shuttlepod One." Tucker and Reed are a great doubles act (I never get enough of Reed, especially), and the dialogue just cracks. Another episode where you know from the start how it has to end, but getting there is all the fun.

It's not a character piece in a conventional sense, but how it's woven into the situation is pretty strong:

The space anomaly of the week is an unexplained barrier between universes/dimensions. Instead of meeting other dimensions, we find that this area of space interferes with biological processes and drives people crazier than in a post-Thanksgiving holiday sale, probably because everyone wanting to go to those wakes up at 2:30am, drinks a gallon of coffee to stay awake, and is antsier than an aardvark finding an ant preserve with a functional lavatory as a result.

Kirk stays behind so that the plot gets interesting the crew who do the nitty gritty can get back to the ship.

The Tholians are another terrific non-humanoid species.

The Theragan derivative is interesting. In real life, some chemicals that can be toxic or fatal in large doses can be quite harmless or beneficial in ways in small and infrequent ones. That's probably the basis for McCoy's scheme. Why it's treated as comedy as Scotty's hot to trot to be downing the entire jug with some Scotch would likely be lethal, but we all had a giggle nonetheless, after which some wanted to go kilt shoplifting, if not kilt lifting.

This is pretty awesome, revealing a portion of the creature (arachnid, if expanded universe drew them rightly) and the effects themselves are sumptuous - really good considering this being mid-season 3.

I forgot how great 60s color palettes were. I sure do hope that McCoy means the condition is TEMPORARY, but he sure doesn't mind Scotty nicking the entire lot instead of dosing up the crew so they all don't go nuts. I dunno, maybe it's the sixties. I want what they're having, as long as it's legal.

"Future's End" is always such a fun rewatch for me. I always love a visit to Earth's past, especially when it's contemporary and they can go nuts with the locations work. Which they certainly do in this one - the beach, Griffith Observatory, etc. It's so great to revisit all these 90's locations.

And just to narrow in on one scene - do I fucking love that bit with Neelix and Kes reviewing Earth soap operas.
