Both have seen it and seemed to think it was more what they want be neither liked how the behavior of the characters was too much like people today as opposed to what we've seen from the era. Mike was sort of annoyed by the behavior of the characters, usually we saw more militrastic behavior when on duty. Too much sass and insubordinate talk. But IIRC he felt it was more I the ballpark of what he wanted.

The ballpark? It's standing on the pitcher's mound!

They should look a little closer at TOS. There is definably banter on the bridge, good natured ribbing and even a little sass. They even get insubordinate at times.

The might want to remove their blinders and rose colored glasses. It's hindering their vision.

They had some interesting qualities back then.

I think what Mike wants is just another TNG. Of all the all the shows, TNG probably has the most professional crew with the least amount of bickering/banter. Keep in mind, he actually said his favorite Trek film is TMP, a film that takes itself a lot more seriously than TOS did. Even Nimoy complained about the lack of humor in that film.

Because of that, he tends to have a foggy memory of pre-Abrams Trek being all the same in terms of presentation. Everything is stately in his mind as far as old Trek is cooncerned. He forgot that a huge part of why Berman made DS9, VOY, and ENT was to try to present a more dysfunctional crew with conflict, but to get away from Gene’s “no interpersonal conflict” rule, he has DS9 pair Starfleet and Bajoran Militia. VOY had Starfleet and Maquis. ENT had pre-Federation humans who weren’t as enlightened.

Abrams and Kurtzman just sidestepped the no interpersonal conflict rule by just ignoring it.

Both Mike and Rich gave a negative review to The Orville specifically because it was aping TNG. They very pointedly shot down the argument it was "real Star Trek" that some of the internet was running with.

They specifically stated in their review that TNG is TNG and copying it is unoriginal.

TNG's "business on the bridge" comes across as very unrealistic. Most workplaces, even military ones aren't that stiff.

THE ORVILLE isn't anything like TNG beyond the fact that they hired some TNG veterans like the cinematographer to replicate the aesthetic. The characters in that show definitely don't behave like those on TNG, which likely put him off. We never see Picard call Riker a dick.

It's so fun to revisit early DS9 when the characters were at each other's throats. Kira even goes over Sisko's head to call an admiral to complain about Sisko's leadership, and Sisko finds out and tells Kira not to **** around or she'll find out.

They started ignoring Gene even before he died. Two movies were produced that Gene found objectionable enough to consider partially or fully non-canon and by Season 4 and the start of Season 5 TNG was no longer as sterile and "perfect universe" as it felt in 1987 through 1989. The less direct impact that Gene had by 1990 the better for both the franchise and the wider fanbase.

the friends with benefits line had me cringing too.

Some lines in nu Trek make me cringe, but yes, on the other hand, the stuffiness of early TNG is too far the other direction. The 'no conflict' rule of Gene's makes for some dull television. TOS had crew conflict. Only early TNG was like that, overly stiff characters

Of course people can be fans of both. Kurtzman doesn't seem to be adverse to hiring people who "respect the source material". Otherwise we wouldn't have Lower Decks, Prodigy and SNW. OTOH we did get the mess that is PIC3 from a "respectful" showrunner. So as always a mixed bag.

i thought Abrams was Star Wars guy, Orci was the massive Trek nerd, and Kurtzman was a casual Trek fan. That's what i read in an interview prior to Trek 09 coming out
