Game The Most Disliked Regular Star Trek Character, 2025 Edition

And FWIW, shouldn't Lore be on the list?
I thought about it, but it ultimately seemed better to leave off the alternate characters when it was a situation when that actor was still around playing the primary character. I felt if I added Lore, I should then also include Thomas Riker, Intendant Kira, Captain Killy, Sutra, Altan, Dahj, Mirror Burnham, Prime Georgiou, Curzon, maybe Sela, probably some others I'm forgetting, and it thus started to feel unwieldy. I felt weird about putting Q and Guinan on, because they are so "recurring" in my mind, but "Picard" did give them each main title billing, which was my main qualification.

It's funny, the first time I compiled this list, I thought it would be one of the easiest ones to put together. I hadn't really considered that the franchise has been around so long that the definition of what makes a series regular has been redefined multiple times, so it required more thought to define than I expected.

But it does definitely involve some judgment calls on the edge cases, so I am curious when people feel someone is missing.

I'll next save Seven Of Nine. I will steal a passage from Nana Visitor's fantastic book "Open A Channel: A Woman's Trek" (so good, everyone buy this) on Seven:

Seven was an avatar many different groups of people could claim as their own in the same way that Spock, Data, and Dax were, but maybe for even a wider group. She was an abused child; she was a survivor of trauma; she was a victim of a cult; she was queer; she was neurodiverse; she was every woman who has been valued for her appearance but is so much more; she was anyone who struggled to find their true self and fit into a world where they felt othered.

Truly one of the ultimate Star Trek characters.

Uhura's been on this list long enough. Not only was she a groundbreaking character, but she was also spirited, brave (for all her "Captain, I'm frightened" talk, note how coolly she handled mirror-Sulu) and just plain fun to watch. As a girl, I quite admired her. Still do!

My next save is not as much in terms of Trek "antagonists"/"frenemies"/etc, but one of the more underrated protagonists, if not the most:

Geordi La Forge

Season 3 somehow forgets that the same Christi in "Booby Trap" is the same one in "Transfigurations", so one has to wonder what made her change her mind after that icy intro that turned her off something awful.

Indeed, considering Ensign Gomez, Aquiel, and other "will they or won't they" love interests and/or answering important plotting questions like "How do we get Geordi involved in an increasingly creepy way compared to last time?", it became a character trait that the Engineer wasn't good with personality skills, despite him ensuring he saved over one thousand asses every week. No double- or triple-meaning intended.

The LaForge/Data relationship is easily one of Trekdom's finest, exploring the human condition and in ways that even the Picard/Data double-act could not. Indeed, Data was "Questor done right" before being shifted to the "I am an android" shtick. Where that came from, I have nary a clue, but it sure does help that Burton and Spiner have amazing onscreen chemistry. They were originally to be a double-act called "The Perceivers" and that really fits perfectly for them. There are so many scenes with them, but here's a few:

Now that's the spirit! Even the in-clue-dolng the kiddle-leighs, this is definitely the real Data. And speaking of spirit (you guessed it!),

And that's when they're separated by a phased spatial anomaly! "The Next Phase" is chock full of great character moments that make up for any plot inconsistencies.

Up next, it's toodles to

Tasha Yar

off the disliked list. For reasons other that she, along with Boris, could never get Moose and Squirrel.

YES, some season 1 scripts did her injustice, such as in "Justice". And yet, "The Arsenal of Freedom", "All Good Things", "Encounter at Farpoint", and others.

She starts off well enough, jumping into action even if a little impassioned, impetuous, and impulsive (or simply "hotheaded" as that covers all three conditions in just one word, woohoo!):

There's a scene from "Lonely Among Us", which lets characters being used as cyphers for the kiddies in the audience, read "Hey kids, here's how you do this" as opposed to letting the characters be characters:

This is not an ideal use of Yar given her traits and she of all people would arguably be more inclined to know, but even that is a thousand times better than "Justice"'s gaffe. If only because we get to see Data Sherlock it up.

But, in terms of character, even the largely drek known as "Code of Honor" has a solid scene in which Yar describes the holodeck and how she uses it to improve her own skills as the computer is designed to learn and react. Her fight against Yareena (which is not exactly the most original name given to Yar's opponent!), was pretty good as well. Very 80s, but very passable. It also helps show that TNG is not TOS as all the security folk in TOS die faster than you can say "Bye!"

While brief, she gets to be commanding briefly in "Angel One" by instructing the renegades to come back to the ship with her.

Tasha's briefly in "Too Short a Season" but is competently written, from what I recall.

"11001001" has a lovely interchange with Worf about sporting.

"Home Soil" compensates for the doofusy scripting accorded Yar in some of the previous stories, clearly showing she is quite capable of the needed level of research and not overlooking the most obvious stuff - think "Justice" and wince (yet again).

"Symbiosis" has "the speech" and, in a blink and you'll miss it moment, waves from the far end of the studio at the end of one scene. But the speech is not the nadir of her time on the show, other scripts are definitely worse with character treatment. And others are better.

"Skin of Evil" - Her death was merely fodder for Armus to show off how easily he could pop 'em all off. Even by 1987, a lead actor being killed off was still quite rare and the cliché was that the one being killed would be in a big and predictable blaze of glory. So, yeah, some credit for originality goes to this.

"Yesterday's Enterprise" - great twist of events to bring her back and is largely given some good stuff, which includes leaving in a blaze... of glory. But here's a standout moment, with great acting:

The ones that jumped out at me as missing/possible were: Harry Mudd, Khan, Saavik, Carol Marcus, Ro Laren, Lore, Lwaxana Troi, Barclay, Vash, Keiko, Alyssa Ogawa, Kurn, Gawron, Martok, Lursa, B'tor, Alexander, Rom, Nog, Garak, Gul Dukat, The Nagus, Moogie, Winn Admi, Jennifer, Kai Opaka.....

And then I realized we'd be pushing 200 as I was over 25 and had not really gotten thru DS9 yet.

And now it's Tom Paris's turn to warp on out of here. He started out as a bit of a cliche -- the brash young man with something to prove -- but Robbie McNeill transcended that, imbuing him with warmth and charm. It doesn't hurt that he was one of the few VOY characters who was treated to a bit of character development, and his friendship with Harry Kim is one of the better Trek bromances.

I see many of my favorites are already saved... Data, Sisko, Odo, Kirk, Spock, etc.

I'll save my favorite character of SNW... Dr. M'Benga.

Truly exceptional character, you can't help but feel for him with all he's gone through between what happened with his daughter and what he went through with the war.

Excellent actor, too.

Next for me is a favorite from the modern era - Raffi Musiker. I liked many of the initial Picard cast, but they knew which one to keep as the thruline for all three years. Our first Trek character to have a real and sustained struggle with addiction.* An intensely relatable character for me in many ways - I also had a very strong relationship with a mentor/boss, who then blew things up for both of us in a way that took me years to rebound from.

*I guess T'Pol did too, but I didn't feel that story related to real addiction issues nearly as well.

I do have a draft of a recurring characters list from 2022, but I just couldn't get there with where the line would be drawn. Maybe this year! There are some lists I've been trying to crack since 2019, sometimes it takes a few passes before it feels like it makes sense.

You should see the angst I go through every time on Arex & M'Ress, before deciding to again accept the Memory Alpha ruling that they are members of the regular cast of TAS.
:)
Was Pelia pre-saved?
She'd also go on the recurring list. For now, anyway. If they don't bump her up to regular status in season 3, they're insane.
Can I save 2?
So it would be Scotty and Worf.
One at a time, though you can take multiple turns. Always leave two eliminations by other players before going again, and include a reason why you love that character. We'll count that first one as an elimination for Scotty, and I'll pop Worf back on. Feel free to eliminate him again if you're moved to. Welcome to the game! :bolian:

Can I save 2?
So it would be Scotty and Worf.

Beat me to it! Here's what I had ready to go:

Up next, the miracle worker!

Montgomery Scott

Considering he also whines about not being able to change the laws of physics, he could hold his own everywhere:

He held his own with Klingons in "Friday's Child", gave them a lot of prezzies in the form of Tribbles by beaming the lot of them onto their ship though he did forget about the Valentine's Day card he had signed and meant to deliver (oh well), wouldn't bend to Eminiar Seven with the request to drop shields (Scotty definitely makes for a robust commander/captain as well as Engineer), not to mention "That Which Survives" and "Bread and Circuses" and "The Doomsday Machine".

He also rigged a Romulan cloaking device in a jiffy and in the middle of a battle situation, helped win back the commandeered ship by getting his opponent to lose a drinking game, overdelivered by multiplying his repair schedule by 4x, was there when Kirk needed him most - unlike the TNG crew with "The Game", he resisted everyone telling him to go listen to Sybok, was instrumental in helping The Gorkon Initiative to succeed in many ways.

And, as with all good engineers, he never quite found anyone to click with. The closest he had was with Uhura, and even a head of lettuce had more charm than Lt Romaine.
