Discovery and SNW is still the same timeline as the rest of the franchise. They proved this with the Lower Decks crossover episode, and with Discovery using footage directly from TNG as historical footage in the 32nd Century.

LOWER DECKS has multiple visual references to the TOS 2260's look. It also has an off hand reference to something involving Pike, a poster with an odd Constitution-class configuration, and a Starbase featuring odd looking uniforms that might be identified by someone familiar with the Kelvin Timeline films. I've seen every LOWER DECKS episode, so there are just some unanswered questions...

There's nothing to say that the DISCOVERY timeline version of the 24th century might be much closer in visual continuity to the classic timeline than the 23rd century. Perhaps there's a Disco-Cerritos in that timeline too? Maybe we even saw that ship in the series finale?

Anyways, there are threads that run into near 100 pages to explore this further.

S31 has its own time issues, like what happened to San for 70 some years.

There's some plot holes, such as her taking part in an elimination game to be emperor. How did she get selected for that? I would have expected any and all contestants to be older and also be a part of the higher end of the Empire already. If her family is any indication, she comes from a pretty modest background. There's a lot of questions on just this aspect alone.

Maybe such a contest is the traditional procedure when an aging Emperor steps down without being killed, or dies of natural causes, or suicide, or the challenger dies as well, etc.

Well, I'll happily be in the minority here - I had a great time with this!

I was expecting something like Disco's final season premiere, by which I mean programming that aspired to be a big action movie, but lacked the resources to realize that ambition.

But this was stunning. This felt like a theatrical feature film. I could not believe how expensive this felt.

Michelle Yeoh has never been better in the role. You could tell how much she relished going back to Georgiou, and the energy of that was fun to ride along with.

It had a grubby B-movie vibe, but I love a grubby B-movie. One of my favorite features of Trek has always been its ability to cycle through genres. I hadn't ever considered this as a genre they could do, but now that I've seen it, I feel like I should have been clamoring for this for a while.

Honestly, my chief complaint was the quick deaths of Melle and Zeph. I found those the two most intriguing performances among the supporting cast, so I would have liked more time with them.

I also didn't love that they were taking orders from Control again. Who the hell thought that was worth another try?

There were definitely other plot holes, but I thought they rushed us past them in the right way, with that overstuffed action movie pace. I noticed them but they didn't actually bother me.

I get why it was not for so many, but I had a blast. Super dark, but kept the essential Trek spirit. Gorgeously produced and brilliantly cast. I might go watch it again right now.

But despite the clunky/non-sensical bits, I didn't find it any worse that some of the other ST movie clunkers (TFF, Nemesis, ID) and likely better than some. Maybe even up a tier with ST09, Generations, and Insurrection.

I'll have to watch it a couple more times to place it correctly..I have a soft spot for INS and found 09 somewhat enjoyable as well.

But I certainly would not put it the upper tier of ST movies (TWOK, TVH, TUC, FC) or even the ones that were solid or better (TMP, TSFS, BEY).

Star Trek has always been dark, but that dark shift away from an optimistic future started with TNG. TNG Season 3 introduced ideas of witch hunts amongst the admiralty, while placing a villian who would damage the lead character for forever. TNG, for all its other faults, set the darker tone, and has been that way for a while, going in to Deep Space Nine, and several other wars that TNG invented.

Dark tone? Blame TOS and TNG. That's where the seeds were planted.

Ben Finney, a Starfleet Lt. Cmdr, is trying to frame Kirk for murder as far back as S1 of TOS. How many times does Spock mutiny? Or the crew consider removing the captain? In "Dagger of the Mind" a renowned federation scientist is lobotomizing people at a supposed prison colony. Not to mention the plot in TUC has SF admirals conspiring to murder the President of the Fed.

There has always been dark moments or episodes. Or even arcs since DS9 hit. But I think it is still optimistic far more often. In every iteration, including this last movie.

Oh, I think the Borg are plenty dark. That was one of the depressing arc that show had.

The point is, the tone is possible, the possibility existed long before.

When i first came to this board, i saw my favorite series, TNG, called the Anti-Star Trek. We'll, 22 years later I think i found my anti-Star Trek. This movie was, as that little fish says, Shite. It really does make me sadder that Lower Decks and Prodigy were canceled. I don't think there was anything redeemable about this movie. Even Garrett, who was the only thing about the marketing i cared about, was kind of irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. I hope we never have to see Georgeiu again.

I watched it yesterday, and if it didn't have the Star Trek Logo at the beginning, I wouldn't have noticed that it actually was Star Trek. But even if it wasn't Star Trek, I found it to be a very bad movie: acting, dialogues and fight scenes made me laugh unintentionally more than one time. And then the plot holes.
Looking at it as a Star Trek movie makes me even more sad: for me, it doesn't fit into canon, and it certainly misses the vibe and spirit that made the old Star Trek franchise (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT) and even the Kelvin timeline so appealing for me. Nowadays, the best "new" Star Trek for me is "The Orville".

How is she visible and audible? Partial phasing, bringing in enough oxygen that is trapped with her, since the field is not skin-tight. That's also why her ankle got stuck

Worse than "These Are the Voyages"? Worse than "Threshold," "Spock's Brain," and "Take Me Out to the Holosuite"?

Yes. And Take Me Out to the Holosuite is a fun episode, but this take is not surprising for someone that has problems with Subspace Rhapsody.

At the same time, trying to adapt a ten-episode series into a ninety-minute film deserves an A for effort.

LOL, no. They couldn't string together a coherent narrative in ninety-five minutes. Their "effort" constitutes D-level work, at best.

I was probably the wrong person to watch it on the merits of not having experience DISCO and a lot of other 'nu' or 'Kurtzman' Trek outside of something like Lower Decks, but man this was just not ENJOYABLE at all (for me). Which I guess puts me into the mindset of a new viewer, any random person with a passing knowledge of Trek or some time to kill with a taste for a new movie. But even then, I couldn't find something to exactly 'enjoy' about it.

Michelle Yeoh is doing her best with this material and pulls a lot of the film's weight (and gets me interested in Georgiou just because she's Michelle effin' Yeoh and she could be a police officer paired up with a talking donut and it'd work) even if the other characters don't match up too much. With their personalities and especially the banter weighing down on everything (Alok excluded even if he doesn't do all that much), especially that whole 'Godsend' thing which is just a waste of a scene on the cusp of the serious mission they're on. I especially found Fuzz to be one of the most obnoxious performances I've seen in a while, but that could be my bias towards the accent and just the humor they just have to add to him.

Outside of the characters, the directing doesn't seem to be doing much favors. It's pretty serviceable to me for the action and I guess the dialogue even if there's some unintentionally funny parts with the focus on the explosions on that planet they're on around the latter half of the film that seems to go on for too long. Though I do have to at least give credit as always to the makeup, prop, and wardrobe department for at least working to provide really nice looking stuff for the cast during the entire film.

I give it a 3 because it just doesn't work for me in the slightest, but it's a film. One I can't really enjoy because it's like a Trek-infused rehash of things I've seen before (failures and some winners) and the worst of both worlds in being a bunch of episodes condensed into a single film. But it's not the worst thing ever, ever, ever. Whoever says that is just a dork.
