That might just be a carry over from David Mack's excellent Sorrows of Empire.
Actually I think they just fucked up the dates.

Because San would be 130ish right now yet is the same age he was in the flashbacks to when Phillipa killed him.

Story wise I'd say the original draft had this taking place shortly after the original Discovery time period, and when they moved it up to the 2330s they just didn't do the proper script work to update everything. Which is massively lazy production work, but about what I've come to expect from the production team in question.

I kinda wonder now who the you've seen them before in legacy Trek character was in the 2250's version of S31? Clark Terrell?

@Lord Garth giving this the smackdown was enough to register the Omega symbol on my laptop.

Anyway let’s do this.

The goal: Watch at least half an hour of Star Trek: Section 31.

Supplements: 150ml Vodka; pot cake.

Notes taken as watching (unedited):

What an ugly ship in the intro credits.

Fate.

Anvil (slow down).

Killed the Fam. Please let the expositional dialogue ease up.

Duh, Daaaah, DUH (!) Borg … oh.

Oh Sun.

Duh, Daaaah, DUH … now I just want to watch the Battle of Sector 001 from Star Trek: First Contact.

<11:40 so far>

Mission Impossible / Oceans vibe … eyeball?!

I wouldn’t mind whatever they’re knocking back right now.

Aussie mech. Yet another missed opportunity for Trek to introduce the Kiwi accent (considering almost every other modern Sci-Fi has).

“I’m giving you a chance to get back in” …

It’s quip time. We have zero investment in these characters. Stop. Oh hi … Fuzz.

Don’t know if it’s the supplements but I’m not really following this quippy expositional orgy. Also sound mix is muffling a lot of the dialogue.

“You’ve murdered so many people” – LOL.

LCARS sound OMG.

Bet the Irish really appreciate Mr. Got Me Lucky Charms.

Whatever they were talking about I completely checked out. I’ve had a change of heart; Section 31 on DS9 was so fucking BORING compared to this dumb but edgy funfest. It’s fun, you see. Dumb fun. Unlike that dry original version that dealt with think-about stuff.

Bar fight! Oh damn. Maybe she’ll come back as a probe.

Camera 360 ° – settle down OO.

Camera 720 ° – calm the fuck down OO!

The Borg aga ... ah FFS. Screw it:

Wait we’ve gone … Anvil.

Stopped at 36 minutes (just after the abrupt flip to the scene between Georgiou and Sun). Whatever that was meant to evoke, it was completely unearned.

I have a better understanding of the criticism now. Had this been some straight-to-streaming B or C tier Netflix production, I might tolerate it for ... I guess as long as I watched it. But as a Star Trek movie? Where is the Star Trek? Even the Trek I've been ambivalent on and / or disliked has carried at least some trace of that core DNA.
Uh…why the spoiler cloud???

Will be interesting to see if the DISCOVERY constituency by and large moves over to SFA, or if that one suffers a large drop off as well.

I think this will depend on simply whether it or not it is good. If it’s well done and entertaining I think there will be a lot of willingness to entertain (ha) a different format.

This is such a blatant continuity error I'm pretty sure there was an explanation within the narrative at some point (like San being stuck in hibernation for 60 years) which was deleted because it was deemed unimportant.

Several that I can think of? The previously mentioned ‘Tiny Little Lifeform’ from Star Trek: Generations; Life form, you tiny little life form…. where are you? Duh du duh du duh du duh du… beep beep beep! Also, Mr Tricorder! I heard the sound of a legacy TNG Tricorder! :adore:

No sign of the 23rd century Duras family or time travelling Lursa and B’Etor. I was also hoping that Armus would show up as I am sure that I saw this entity in the trailer? Ended up being something else though…

Will it? Everything I've seen suggests a general lack of enthusiasm for SFA amongst most of the fanbase.

Is it any more of a continuity error then the Empire still being around in the 2320-2330s, or Augment's invading another planet in the 1980s? After a certain point you just have to accept that the writers just aren't very good at keeping track of things.

I can imagine the crowd I used to be part of migrating over to SFA. They migrate from series to series. But otherwise, yeah...

I think by "his planet" he meant Earth, it was just poorly worded in the shooting script.

So, with a $12M salary, I'm guessing Michelle Yeoh is the second highest paid Trek actor after Patrick Stewart's $14M for Nemesis. Impressive.

Well... here we go.

The sets were really large and nice. Clearly, a lot of money went here.

There's some plot holes, such as her taking part in an elimination game to be emperor. How did she get selected for that? I would have expected any and all contestants to be older and also be a part of the higher end of the Empire already. If her family is any indication, she comes from a pretty modest background. There's a lot of questions on just this aspect alone.

And as wrong as it is to kill so many people, no one in this universe can hold Georgiou as a criminal because those actions occured OUTSIDE Federation jurisdiction. Hell, outside their universe. Now, if the Mirror Universe comes after her for crimes, that's a different story because it happened in their territory and under their laws. The whole idea of holding her accountable to what she did over there by jailing her in this universe just doesn't work.

Kacey Rohl was pretty good as Rachel Garrett. We got to know a little bit about her, such as her being a top science officer. I like that this is another (eventual) captain whose background is being a science officer. She was a good casting choice.

So many of the other characters were just so... dull. Predictable. Not really standing out. It's like the movie was trying TOO hard to make them into something more.

One thing puzzles me... Alok. He was obviously in cryogemic sleep, but he wasn't part of the Botany Bay. So where was he? Did the Augments have a bunch of sleeper ships sent out? I feel like the Eugenics Wars are being tied into too many things now. He could have been just about anything else and it wouldn't have made a difference.

The fight scenes were REALLY long... which you can tell was being used to mask the fact there was so little story.

Nice cameo of Jamie Lee Curtis. But why the hell was Control back? It was one of the worst aspects on the second worst season in the franchise. Having Control back was just... stupid.

I feel like this was a waste of potential for both Yeoh AND Section 31 itself. It felt like such a... generic B movie.

Section 31 is just not done right in the current era. To borrow from another Mirror Universe character, they are a scalpel, not a club. There's no nuance, no subtlety. They just don't get Section 31.

There were some dumb fun moments, but I feel like this was just... so empty. A lot of the dialogue was just terrible.

Better than '09 and ID, but not NEMESIS. 3 out of 10 for me. And if I'm being perfectly honest... if this is what was going to happen as a tv series, I'm glad it was reduced to only a tv movie.

I was hoping to like it more than I did, (more than the trailers suggested) but it was as predicted, derivative and uninspired, and though the action/fights were creative they were also (as usual) way too long. It was really clear that this should have been a series. I would have loved some of the gang deeply had their characters' backstories been teased out over the course of several episodes. I still love Michelle Yeoh. Philippa Georgiou is one of the all-time great characters in the Star Trek Universe.

Two more things and I'm done. I think I got everything out of my system after this.

Alok had potential. A character who grew up in the 20th Century now living in the 24th. Would've been nice to see an episode focused on his backstory. It never would've happened but, if it did, it could've been interesting.

I think if you kept the same core four cast members, but had a completely different story and different people putting it together... I think a version of Section 31 could've worked. Just not this version. Definitely not this version!

"I saw the Eugenics Wars. The carnage they caused. The bodies coming home on television. Say what you want about the Federation, but there's a lot less of that going around these days. I can live with that, I don't know about you."
