Superman

If i'm honest i expected a trainwreck - so many have tried to get DC to rival Marvel and failed. Not because the DC heroes are bad or uninteresting ( i think Batman is by far the coolest Superhero there is and i'm a die hard Marvel fanboy) but it never completely clicked and very few movies i'd actually call good.

Now declaring the Gunn DCU to be a masterpiece is way too early but the trailer didn't suck, by a long shot ( the only minor quibble is the red underwear - i mean come on! Get rid of that already).

I even choked up a little when the african kid raised the makeshift Superman flag begging for help - well done playing the heartstrings.

I haven't followed the production to closely or simply forgot but i was surprised to see so many supporting heroes - Nathan Fillion ( Hell Yeah!) as Guy Gardner ( and that haircut still looks like shit! ), Mr. Terrific( had to look him up), Hawkgirl and of course Lex Luthor ( must have been him in some sort of powersuit fighting Superman in the sports stadium).

Corenswet ( sp?) also looks very decent, that was also a little concern of mine but his Clark Kent looks appropriate nerdy and Superman appropriately heroic ( loved the slow mo shot of him protecting the little girl with his body).

So yeah, now i'm really looking forward to see this Superman.

Oh and Krypto!!!!! :adore::adore::adore:

You must really hate that other people can have different opinions from yours.
Oh, you can have all the opinions you want but that doesn't mean I'm prohibited from making what was a pretty mild joke about them.

The use of recurring musical cues as a storytelling device dates back to well before movies and serves a purpose well beyond "nostalgia bait." It helps set the tone and atmosphere and serve as an emotional guide to the audience while also helping to establish character and theme.

I'm trying to decide if that is Brainiac (both mechanical and green skin versions) at about the 1:50-1:55 mark.

And as for the mechanical humanoid form that is briefly seen (with Superman appearing to mourn over it), speculation is that's
either Kelex or one of the Fortress's Superman robots.

After watching Creature Commandos, I'm hoping it is what is left of GI Robot.

While I was at the pharmacy getting my cocktail of vaccines (COVID, flu, pneumonia, shingles), the TV in the waiting area was tuned to our Québécois version of Headline News Network and they had a segment on the trailer. Not something I expected to see here.

I certainly don’t want to prompt any arguments and I will preface my reaction to the trailer by saying it clearly matches what Gunn says he wants the film to be (and, to me, it borrows more than a few hints from Alex Ross’ work in Kingdom Come—especially Mr. Terrific—and that’s a good thing). I went back to watch the first teaser (not the full trailer) for Man of Steel out of curiosity and I found it a bit more compelling as a teaser than this one (it piqued my curiosity a little more than this one—Man of Steel’s teaser suggested the film would challenge my expectations more than the new trailer and I like having my expectations challenged). This one is more of a glimpse into something more familiar.

I will, of course, see it at the cinema as soon as I can manage it (rarely make it to opening day screenings anymore). I’m a big fan of Gunn’s work and I’m quite looking forward to the movie. Still wish Cavill had gotten a proper sequel of his own, but that’s no knock on what’s coming.

I’m very curious about the Supergirl film too.

One thing I like about Gunn's work is that it seems as if any character from the comics could appear at any moment. The Suicide Squad (2021) hammered that home with its crazily vivid and compelling depiction of Starro. After seeing that, it was too hard to imagine that there could be any limits regarding what might happen next.

Another is that his DC stuff has been simply fun to watch. Peacemaker is one of my favorite streaming era shows, period, and I eagerly look forward to S2.

A fun movie about characters and things from the comics that could be thoroughly enjoyed would be more than enough for me.

It is a trailer. Do we know what music is actually being used in the film?
Yes, Gunn has said that the John Williams Superman theme will be a part of the actual score for the movie, along with many new themes. Which I think is the right choice. I don't think it's nostalgia or fan service at all. Williams theme is ingrained in the collective consciousness of our society as *the* Superman theme in a way that virtually no other music for a superhero movie or TV show has ever been. I think it is appropriate to continue to reference it in modern day Superman projects.

If you say so…
Sorry, I'll elaborate:

Starting the trailer off with Superman at his lowest point - not a good look. I am tired of Superman being beat. He should be like in the Golden / Silver ages. Limitlessly powerful.
The suit itself - looks like expensive pajamas and not a superhero suit. Rubbery, latexy and loose.
Guy Gardner looks old as hell, Hawkgirl looks way too young. Mr Terrific looks great.
Again with the "developing world is full of strife and they are waiting for a superhero to save them" - been done to death at both DC and Marvel, it's time to stop. That's why I liked Black Adam, it was different and new. Khandaq had its own superbeing.
The public turning on Superman - was done badly in BvS, seems like it'll be a worse plotpoint.

Doesn't feel like we'll get anything new.

Superman needs a challenge, otherwise where's the movie? Superman as God for two hours?
Golden Age Superman wasn't "limitlessly powerful."

The actor tapped to play Hal Jordan is even older than Fillion. Going with post Crisis Middle Aged Hal and Guy is my guess.
Hawkgirl is young in current continuity. She's in her early twenties and so is the actress. And seriously, we don't see much of her in the trailer. And what we do see is at a distance and in the background. Hard to pin her age from those.
Again with the "developing world is full of strife and they are waiting for a superhero to save them"
It's kind of what Superman has done since he was created. Go into strife filled areas and help.

I can't stop watching this trailer (although, okay, I took time out to watch the LOWER DECKS finale).

I love that they're embracing the sheer Silver Age comic-bookiness of it all. Bring on the Bottle City of Kandor, Red Kryptonite, Giant Turtle-Man Jimmy, and Lori Lemaris the mermaid.

It dawns on me that this looks like the show I wanted THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN to be when I was a kid back in the sixties. Don't get me wrong: I enjoyed watching George Reeves on our original b/w television set, but part of me was always disappointed that the TV show wasn't as fantastical and science-fictiony as the twelve-cent comics I picked up down at the drug store. Where were the alien invaders, mad scientists, super-villlains, and, yes, Krypto the Super-Dog?

Instead of Superman too often fighting mobsters in suits and other mundane menaces.

Can't wait to see this movie.
