In the vein of episodes like TNG: “Relics” (Dyson’s Sphere), TNG: “The Masterpiece Society” (stellar core fragment), and VOY: “Good Shepard” (dark matter), the problem introduced in your story must be based on a real scientific fact, theory, or research. It can involve any type of natural science: biology, astronomy, physics, etc… Try to find something that canon Trek hasn’t really hit on yet (there’s a lot out there, trust me). Edit: If a participant unintentionally uses a phenomenon that canon used, he/she will not be disqualified. As much as we all love Trek, we can't memorize everything. Any time period, any characters. The solution to the problem can be anything you want. So watch an episode of Discovery Channel’s The Universe, consult those guys over at the Trek Tech forum, grab a hyper spanner for that Heisenberg compensator, and remember…heavy on the ‘tech talk!’ The word limit is 3000, due to all that tech babble. Thank you, sir. I hope I wasn't too presumptive in making the April challenge thread before you 'declared' me the winner. From what I've noticed, that seems to be the tradition. I made sure April 2nd was over, at least.
not with an energy weapon or a micro-transporter-equipped TR-116... does it have to be 21st century physics or can i use treknophysics like Trinimbic radiation and anti-phaser jamming etc?
Beams from energy weapons can suffer from attenuation or diffusion due to various particles of matter or molecules or subatomic particles... Optics: a sniper needs to be able to see or pinpoint her prey--there's a variety of physical phenomenon that could easily mess up a sniper's day from that angle. Also you don't have to write about physics--biology and chemistry are fair game too. Something about the planet's eco-sphere is affecting her physically or mentally causing problems with her completing her mission.
In the spirit of the rules and my intent...I would prefer it be 'backed up' by an existing, real world theory or research.
Hmm... how long until the deadline - 29th? Hmm... I've been trying to stay away from entering these challenges for a while to get some other writing done, but I'm beginning to think I can't resist this one! Of course, I don't actually have a story yet so it may defeat me anyway...
