I thought it was the Next Generation hand phaser prop. If it's a vacuum cleaner model, I'll bet kids play Star Trek with it.

Yeah, it's meant to be the latter. Couldn't find a free asset with the look I wanted, so I modeled my own. If "SpaceBalls" had parodied this scenario, the device could have been an accessory of 'Mega-Maid".

Enough with the silly "what ifs" unless you have a compelling argument worthy of consideration. Operation Plowshare ran for nearly 3 decades, and produced nothing of value.

Okay, if say the 4th movie in Kelvin Trek is an encounter with the DDM, what would you write it up to be? Different from DDM Episode some how?
I'd go the Nostromo route, blow up all the crew with the DDM and have Scotty survive in the shuttlecraft

I will suppress your power generation systems to facilitate quick and painless annihilation of abandoned operating machinery that your civilization cannot afford to dismantle. I greatly enjoyed Vendetta even after it no longer quite fit with how TNG was progressing with the Borg. Just because it contradicts canon doesn't mean it can't stand on its own as an entertaining read. The parts with Bonaventure(sp?), though...that's depressing, and at this point sort of a dark alternate take on how things might have progressed with Seven.
I think the thing to remember is that Kirk was theorizing that the DDM originated from another galaxy, while Picard in turn theorized that the DDM may have been built just outside our galaxy, IIRC. Vendetta ends up going with Picard's theory, and if you want to speculate that the DDM is an anti-Borg weapon, that version does make a bit more sense.
As far as it not ultimately being well-equipped to handle the Borg, we should consider a) that it turns out the DDM in the episode is essentially a prototype, and b) that we have no idea how much less advanced the Borg may have been at the time the DDM was constructed.
Anyway, I don't see this book as suffering from small-universe syndrome, as it was unambiguously written explicitly to depict what might happen if if the DDM's big brother showed up to finish off what it had started. It's not a random coincidence within the story but rather the entire point of the story.
