Which fan films are worth seeing?

I agree with the choices of Star Trek Aurora (this is a 3d production) , you should look also at Star Trek: Ambush (a UK production), Starship Intrepid (also a UK prod.) , Starship Valiant, (from Oklahoma IIRC), Yorktown... Farragut has its flaws but is entertaining. Starship Exeter (the first one is fannish in often bad ways but the second one is so much better)...

While TOS isn't to everyone's taste, the original series still had unrealized potential. It was unceremoniously cut short at only three seasons when the show was supposed to be about a five-year mission, while other television shows of the era such as Bonanza went on and on and on and on and on, and all the Berman-era Trek shows got to end with actual series finales to bring some closure to everything, even ENT in its own way. The idea behind both Continues and New Voyages is basically, what if the original show had been able to go on for a couple more seasons and depict more of the actual five years? NV even used a couple scripts from the Phase II series that was in development in the 1970s but never materialized, and three other episodes were written by actual TOS writers.

Of Gods and Men and Renegades have my eye, because they are original stories and tried to do something new and different. Have you seen both?
Yes, I've even seen the Renegades sequel/finale The Requiem. Of Gods and Men I love, Renegades... not so much. It does have some neat moments, and I remember some pointing out similarities in it and the later official productions Picard (the general concept of rogues doing their own thing) and Strange New Worlds (Lexxa Singh is basically La'an Noonien-Singh)

And the less said about Renegades: Ominara, the better.

Forgot to mention, "Prelude to Axanar" is also worth checking out (even if the debacle of its follow up was a shitshow that essentially killed fanfilms). I thought the documentary angle was something neat - I was also surprised to discover that the rest of Axanar was going to be in a more traditional narrative format.

Didn't the people who made this rip off the fans? I read stories that the guy leading this project was a real slimeball.

Maybe, but it was the death knell to fan films.
It, Prelude? No. As stated above, it was the behavior of those running the project after the release of Prelude that eventually led to the publication of official fan film guidelines.

Death knell? Also no, not at all. Numerous creators continue to produce fan films, albeit arguably far below the level of what might have been.

Also a very solid story can still be told in fifteen minutes.

It's the audiovisual equivalent of written short stories. Not every story has to be a massive novel.
Yeah, things like Lower Decks and Prodigy show that it’s totally easy to tell a Trek story in 15-20m. I also bet if your fanfilm ended up being 20m Paramount probably wouldn’t care - I think their issue was more the productions made by people who essentially worked in the entertainment industry raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to make episodes featuring actual Trek actors.

After release? I don't care. It was still the people who made the Axanar, and they ruined the scene for anyone else trying to make a fan film who wanted to do something more than a short.

there's already at least 2 insufferably long threads to go complain about Axanar...please take pity on us and go take whatever you have to say there...

Insufferable? Complaining? I just asked a question and made an observation. This is a thread to discuss fan films, and that includes Axanar. Chill out my dude.

I said that no doubt I'd overlooked something, and indeed I had. Going back through my posts in this forum, I dug up this relatively recent gem (from over two years ago).

Commanders of Starfleet: Trek in the 40s

This type of outside the box approach is what makes the best fan films, IMO.

No doubt there are others....

Star Wreck In The Pirkinning. I like it more than most of the TNG films.

They can use the exact ship designs, but not the same names and uniform logos and stuff?
