Collecting on Disc: What do you have?

Same here. If you're dissatisfied with them, consider the big box set. Much sturdier. If you buy it online, save your receipts, check the box for damage, check all discs. Not quite the same as a $5 DVD of a movie.

The discs still work, and I subscribe to Paramount Plus so I can see DS9 anytime. The only reason I would repurchase the sets would be if they remastered them.

Blu-Ray:
  • TNG Seasons 1-7
  • PIC Seasons 1-3
  • DSC Seasons 1-5
  • Movies I-X
  • At some point soon, I'll be ordering TOS on Blu-Ray.

DVD:
  • TOS Seasons 1-3
  • TAS
  • DS9 Seasons 1-7 (given to me by a friend who bought them at a yard sale for dirt-cheap)
  • VOY Seasons 1-7 (see above)

VHS (whatever survived from my Great VHS Purge of 2006):
  • TMP (Extended Cut)
  • TWOK
  • Pilots for TOS, TNG, DS9, and VOY (they were sold together as a set back in the '90s)
  • Stray episodes of TOS, TNG, DS9, and VOY that I recorded off of TV.

You'll love TOS on Blu-ray, absolutely worth the upgrade. All extras ported over except for some of the easter eggs hidden in the menus, those little 2-min. secret file things. All episodes are available with the remastered CGI ships and stuff, or you can select original broadcast. Each episode gives you this option, so no unnecessary menu surfing. I can say, TOS with its original effects looks beautiful on Blu-ray.

Any thoughts on TAS DVD?

It looks like TAS. All I've got!

I meant regarding having the episodes on disc, quality, special features, packaging, stuff like that.
The packaging was fine. I took out all the discs years ago and put them in the DVD Book I have. Visually, the image is clear, and it looks as good as a '70s cartoon can look (without upgrading to Blu-Ray, which I'm not going to do).

For the Special Features, I might as well just cut-and-paste from Memory Alpha. I watched them, but it was almost 20 years ago:

Memory Alpha Article on TAS DVDs

So many variations of Trek on VHS, DVD, and bluray. (and laserdisc, sorry laserdisc aficionados!)

I've always wondered why they repackage and re-release the various shows and movies in same format year after year. Obviously, it's to make $$$, but on the consumer side, how many bluray editions of TOS can they release where its the same content but different packaging?

My current Trekollection:

VHS
Various episodes of VOY, DS9, TNG, and ENT videotaped off of UPN, SCIFI, Spike TV, FOX, and various other local channels that carried Trek back in the day.

DVD
DS9 S1 - S7
VOY S1-S7
ST I - ST X - Director's Editions
Had TNG S1,2,4,5,6,7 but parted ways once the blurays were obtained.

Bluray
ST TMP (4K Director's cut)
ST TOS 50th Anniversary Collectors edition - includes TOS, TAS, and movies I-VI. By far, I think this is the best release of TOS on bluray. The packaging is full of easter eggs and looks great. Each disc has artwork from a prominent episode. Was able to watch TOS from start to finish thanks to this set, and it also contains TOS Movies I-VI. This link sums up the product nicely -- Star Trek 50th Anniversary Collection --
ST TNG S 1 - S7
ST TNG Best of Both Worlds two parter (has audio commentary and I think another special feature or two that are unavailable on the Season 3 bluray)
Enterprise S1 - S4
ST VII - ST X
Star Trek (2009) - Came in a replica of the Kelvin USS Enterprise - great model!
Star Trek into Darkness (3D Bluray, have 3D TV)
Star Trek Beyond (3D bluray/4K, have 3D TV)
Star Trek Discovery Season 1-5
Star Trek Lower Decks Season 1-4
Star Trek Picard Season 1-3
Star Trek Strange New Worlds Season 1-2 (4K)
Galaxy Quest (had DVD, gave to a friend when I got the bluray steelbook)

Documentaries
What We Leave Behind (DS9)

I recently reorganized a lot of my movies collections and segregated all the Trek media to one location, with the exception of 3D movies, which I keep together.

Blu-ray:

TOS 1-3
TAS
TNG 1-7
ENT 1-4
DSC 1-5
PIC 1-3
LD 1-4
PRO 1 (2 on pre-order)
The Best of Both Worlds
Short Treks
The Roddenbery Vault

4K:

All Movies (TOS, TNG, and Kelvin, including TMP DE)
SNW 1-2

No DS9 or Voyager. Had them on DVD, but the Discs started to go a bit cloudy, and it's one of those rare occasions where streaming quality is slightly superior. If they ever come out on Blu-ray, it would be a day one purchase for me.

Used to have all of TOS, TAS, TNG, Enterprise, and the Movies on DVD (also the Movies on Blu-ray), but gradually upgraded to best available formats. Also had loads on VHS, before the DVDs became affordable.

What We Leave Behind (DS9)

Oh wow, you basically have the entire franchise, everything with a disc release anyway.
Do you have a system for how you organize your videos? I separate format, DVD (A-Z) and Blu-ray (A-Z).
On DVD: TMP, TSFS, TVH, TFF, TNG (S1, 4-7), DS9 (S1-7), VOY (S1-7), Star Trek (2009)
On Blu-ray: TOS (S1-3), TWOK, TUC, TNG (S2-4), all 4 TNG films, ENT (S1-4), Into Darkness, Beyond, PIC (S1)

To answer your questions about re-releases, part of it is money, but part of it is newer formats, remasters, reprints, and so on. Taking TOS for example. It first came to VHS, then 2-episode DVD's, then the 3 colorful DVD season sets, the 3 HD-DVD sets, the 3 Blu-ray sets, then the complete series set on Blu-ray. I think that's it for TOS, though, unless there's a 4K release I don't know about.

Another example: The Jeffersons. There's a Deluxe Edition box set of the entire series, 2 seasons per volume, S11 as its own volume, a bonus disc with an extra on the theme song plus a few episodes from related shows as extras. You also get a fancy companion booklet. This is out of print and very expensive. The show got a second print and is $60 or so but missing the bonus disc and booklet.

I have all the movies on DVD.

I have TOS remastered on DVD.

I have selected TOS episodes on commercial VHS.

I have TNG on DVD

I have DS9, VOY, and ENT on off-air VHS

I have all of PIC, most or all of DSC, and all but the newest seasons of LD, SNW, and PRO on DVD.

TOS - DVD & Blu-Ray
TAS - Blu-Ray
TOS Movies - Blu-Ray
TNG - DVD
TNG Movies - Blu-Ray
DS9 - DVD
VOY - DVD
ENT - Blu-Ray
Kelvin Movies - Blu-Ray
DSC S1-3 - Blu-Ray
PIC S1 - DVD
LD - Blu-Ray
SNW - 4K Blu-Ray Steelbook

TOS - DVD & Blu-Ray
TAS - Blu-Ray
TOS Movies - Blu-Ray
TNG - DVD
TNG Movies - Blu-Ray
DS9 - DVD
VOY - DVD
ENT - Blu-Ray
Kelvin Movies - Blu-Ray
DSC S1-3 - Blu-Ray
PIC S1 - DVD
LD - Blu-Ray
SNW - 4K Blu-Ray Steelbook
Are you going to get Short Treks and Prodigy?

Ya know, that's a much easier way to group everything. Lemme try this format.

TOS: 3 seasons on Blu-ray + 3 soundtracks on CD
TOS films: 4 on DVD, 2 on Blu-ray + all 6 soundtracks on CD
TNG: 4 seasons on DVD, 3 seasons on Blu-ray + 4 soundtracks on CD
TNG films: all 4 on Blu-ray + soundtracks to all 4 films on CD
DS9: all 7 seasons on DVD + soundtrack to "Emissary"on CD
VOY: all 7 seasons on DVD + soundtrack to "Caretaker" on CD
I also have the 2 "Best of Star Trek" soundtracks on CD
ENT: all 4 seasons on Blu-ray + soundtrack to "Broken Bow" on CD
Reboot films: The first on DVD, the 2 sequels on Blu-ray
PIC: Season 1 on Blu-ray

Are you going to get Short Treks and Prodigy?
I had been waiting to get Short Treks until they make a complete set, but I don't know if that will happen! I'm also planning to get Prodigy at some point.

I want to fill in the rest of the collection too, but I'm probably not going to get the rest of Picard and Discovery until I can get them cheap on the used market.

There already is. The Blu-ray set likely left off the 10th short as it focuses on Picard instead of Discovery. The 10th short is part of the Picard S1 set. Prodigy is available as S1 Part 1 (10 episodes, S1 Part 2 (10 episodes), and Season 2 (all 20 episodes).

You can always bookmark them to a wish list on Amazon and wait for the prices to drop.

Yeah, I was hoping for all ten of the shorts in the same set, but I'll probably have to settle for what's already out. Prodigy is probably my next purchase when I have some spare money though!

DS9 - series DVDs plus What We Left Behind
TOS - bluray switchable original and revised effects
SNW - blurays, all issued so far
Picard - blurays
Disco - blurays, all issued so far
Short Treks - all issued so far
edit: oh, and the movies based on TOS

I have TNG on BluRay, and ENT and the first two seasons of Discovery on DVD. As for the movies, I have First Contact on BluRay... and Generations and Nemesis on DVD and Insurrection on VHS. The Sir Patrick collection guy in me also had to buy PIC on BluRay but I've never even bothered to unwrap those.

I used to have all of pre-2009 Trek on VHS, recorded off mostly from digital SD tv on quality tapes, recorded between 1990 and 2005. Also had a handful of commercial VHS (for episodes that happened to be cut on tv, or the new German dubbing of TAS). When the DVD releases came out, I replaced them, but kept a handful for nostalgic reasons. All others I gave away for free later (around 2018), to a guy I met online who's still using VHS.

In the 00s, I bought all DVD releases in season boxes, except for VOY, which I bought later, after the price had dropped.

When the Blu Ray releases came out in the 2010s, I replaced TOS, TNG and ENT, as well as the movies I-X, so my only remaining DVD are DS9 and VOY. I gave away the TOS, TNG, ENT and TAS dvds to friends.

Since 2010, I bought all new releases on Blu Ray (standard releases, no steelbooks or 4k).

To sum this up, I got:

On DVD:
DS9 (7 season boxes)
VOY (7 season boxes)

Blu Ray:
TOS (3 season boxes)
TAS (1 box)
TNG (7 season boxes)
ENT (4 season boxes)
Movies I-X (theatrical versions), TMP and TWOK (director cuts)
Kelvinverse movies
DSC (5 seasons)
PIC (3 seasons)
LD (4 seasons)
PRO (1 season, season 2 on pre-order)
SNW (2 seasons)

Tl;dr: I got every season and movie released so far in the best available picture quality, but without regard for special packaging and/or collector releases.

Everything up to and including Enterprise. And all the movies.

I am such a sucker. I've owned all the TOS movies on VHS in Pan and Scan and then Letterbox format. Then again on DVD, then again on DVD (the special editions), then again on Blu-Ray (awful) and now on 4K*. Same with TNG, I got all the VHS tapes (which cost a small fortune) - then the DVD and then the Blu-Ray.

*TMP is a special case, I got the special edition VHS with the longer edit, The DVD, then the DE DVD, which I had to import, then on blu-ray, and now the standard 4K and of course, the DE special edition box set thing as well. I've spent at least £150 on that movie over the years.

The new stuff (aside from PicS3) does not resonate with me, so I dont own the physical copies and I probably never will. I guess that I may pick up Prodigy as its likely to be pulled from streaming and disappear, only to be remembered by the hardcore fans along with hardcore fans. It seems that animation and Star Trek doesn't resonate with the masses.
