Some thoughts

Rook was really closer to Fred Pohl (Man+Plus) than Ash or David--who wanted humans dead.

The rat evoked more of 2011's THE THING, style wise. I liked this distillation.

Well I wouldn't say Ash wanted humans dead, he was just following orders from The Company.

David had a god complex so I agree he wanted to harm humans

I wonder if the Rat was supposed to be a more refined Fifield mutant

As with everything else, I imagine the gestation periods in any future Alien movies will be entirely contingent on the plot. Whether it's long or short will depend on which serves the movie's plot.
I think it's AVP that first radically sped up the gestation period? Though I guess we have no idea how quickly the colonists were infected in Aliens.

So how short of a movie would Alien 3 have been if they had used these super short gestation periods?

Ripley's metabolism had been messed up from the improperly exited cryosleep, she had a Queen in here (which would logically take longer to gestate) and there were the medical injections she got from Clemens. All enough to slow down the process inside her

I am not so sure—we’re I a company man/droid that was loyal—-I would (if I were Ash, take Parker’s advice—freeze Kane and put him in the shuttle.

I think Ash betrayed the Company and not just his crew.

So I'm guessing with the story told here, it was a greater conspiracy to get the Xenos for Bioresearch and it wasn't just Burke acting on his own in Aliens. He was part of this Bioresearch Conspiracy that still existed 50 years after the first movie.

I do love how here it's explained that it's not about weaponizing the Xenos, but commercializing them to make better space colonists.

Ash could have wanted to observe the xenomorph's capabilities? Maybe?

For his own amusement I think—remember, Burke wanted Ripley and Newt as hosts during hypersleep…easier to contend with.

The responsible thing would to to accompany Kane in the Narcissus.

From the Company’s point of view, space truckers would likely try to kill it.

Had Big Chap killed everyone off (by some accounts it was already dying as it hid in the shuttle)—it might have gotten hungry—bitten into an electrical main—got lost in the refinery.

I just get this feeling Ash was a bit more independent than Rook.

One other thing…I think Ash respected Kane, the only human crew member who was a true explorer at heart.

Now while there was a scene where he raised a pistol—-we don’t really know what spooked him—his leaning over an open egg (that most would run from) makes me wonder if he volunteered to take the spore…his confusion upon awakening perhaps caused by seeing crew mates.

You make a persuasive argument. But I have a feeling (given the additional lore from other movies) the xenomorph would have entered a state of hibernation shortly after killing off the non-synthetic crew. I figured Ash would then have delivered the xenomorph to the company.

But I do see your point and agree that they should have cryogenically froze Kane, it would make delivering the xenomorph much easier and less messy.

I'm really glad I saw this in the cinema, even if my ears aren't. (That wailing noise needs to be turned down a little, jesus).

It was good. I preferred it over the previous entry (that being Covenant, not the original). I don't feel like too many silly mistakes happened, just a lot of bad calls made by people who wouldn't know any better. These are kids from a mining world, after all, not scientists who shouldn't stick their faces in egg-shaped objects.

David Jonsson was the highlight of the entire movie. His ability to essentially play two different characters made for a tense viewing experience, and I was even angered on his behalf during the more heated moments with other characters.

There were some problematic callbacks, as many have pointed out. Had it not been for the horrendous Deepfake, Ripley's recycled one-liner and the sign-off at the end, it would've been spot on in terms of references. Even friends were saying that the Rook character was given too much hard light, and that made the uncanny valley feeling far worse.

Sound design was superb, especially the accurate pulse rifle sounds and MUTHUR boot-up noises. Visually it was beyond stunning, and I respect the use of animatronics. Robert Bobroczkyi was excellent casting too, and there are BTS videos out there of that guy in his Slendermorph suit. It's a crazy watch. Set design accurately places this between the original two movies, which I appreciate also.

If anything, it's left me keen to watch the upcoming tv series and await any further entries in the franchise. Just chill out on those references, Fede. :)

Here the uncanny valley helped make Rook creepy. Same with Rogue One…where we saw Cushing’s character a bit taller—less human—all Tarkin.

Peter Cushing was a kindly man—there was none of that in the CG character.

In Romulus, the chestburster looked a bit weakened from breaking through the rib cage…

I think I'm going to give it a 7. The production design was great. The acting was all great. The creatures were borderline terrifying if you're not desensitized like me, probably. I wasn't a big fan of every single shot being a close up. I think the movie could have benefitted from letting some scenes breathe. I didn't like Prometheus on my first viewing either, but now I pretty much love it. I'll probably give this one another chance on home video, though.

It's still leagues better than Alien: Covenant.

BTW, how did they do Rook's voice? Did they use an AI to mimic Ian Holm's voice or just have a soundalike do it?

I remember they did something similar for the Justice League movie. Sold out pretty quick

I think it's quite telling that they don't massively take the piss out of it and completely tear it apart the way they do a lot of things (I think the Pitch Meeting was similar in that respect)
