Memories of Star Trek at the cinema.

Great, great thread.

The first Trek film I saw in the theater was Generations. I was in middle school and had to scrounge a ride from my friend, since our small-town movie theater wasn't showing it. Worse, I'd been teased by the (AWESOME) TV publicity festival -- the commercials and full-length trailers -- for weeks leading up to opening, and then a sudden sickness the morning of opening day pushed the trip back a week! Argh!

Anyway, the day finally came, and we drove an hour and a half up-island to see it. This was pre-mainstream internet, and so I wasn't exposed to all the temptations of spoilers that I am now. My friend and I were both floored when the Ent-D bought the farm. I remember hearing Data's line, "Core breach in progress," and thinking to myself, "jeez, how the hell are they gonna get outta this --" BOOM! "Oh, holy crap."

It was just magical to see the TNG cast on the big screen, and to see Data playing with emotions, and to see little bits of for-the-fans continuity thrown in there like the TOS-era black laquered engraved panels on the Amargosa observatory walls, etc. I agree that it doesn't stand up well, but those memories will always be grand.

I went to see First Contact in the same theater with the same friend. By this time we were a bit older, so we were allowed to wander the mall before and after the film -- quite a treat for a farm boy whose most common exposure to mass merchandise was the local stationary store. Especially excellent in those days, when Trek merchandise lined the shelves of ToysRUs and Spencer's Gifts. I snapped up a First Contact Phaser II that very night -- the original Playmates Phaser II had been one of my favorite Trek toys, and to pick up the updated version on the same night I saw it in the film was priceless.

Anyway, the movie started late, as the theater was packed. Then, right as Data was about to say "to hell with our orders," his face melted away and took the bridge with it. Film malfunction. So we had to wait 15 minutes for them to get that fixed, and then they started the film again. Right as Picard's jamming to his tunes in the Obs lounge, though ... the film cuts out again. Turns out enough additional customers had come in late to convince management to restart the film from the top.

As you might imagine, people were upset ... but in the traditionally jovial manner of the more kind-hearted Trekkers. One person said, "I guess they must be getting assimilated up in the projector room," which got a laugh. Someone else followed that up with "this movie theater must be of Cardassian manufacture!" and the room roared. My friend and I looked at each other and he said, indicating the crowd, "my people!" It was truly a communal experience. I'll never forget it.

As others have said, INS and NEM really didn't incite the same feelings or atmosphere. Although, I will say that during the final few minutes of Nemesis, when Riker was trying to remember what tune Data had been trying to emulate when they first met, several people in the theater either began whistling it or muttering, frustrated (and certainly with a twinge of sadness), "it's Pop Goes The Weasel, man."

Very much looking forward to XI.

It all goes back to the nineties, that golden age of Independence Day, Dragonheart, Casper, Twister, Volcano, The Lost World, Sphere, Godzilla and Wild Wild West. I recall telling someone I had went to see Contact, whereon he immediately misstook the film for something called Star Trek: First Contact. At some point, disgesting these and other cinematic classics, I went to the theatres to see the latest Star Trek picture, helmed by future Thunderbirds auteur, Jonathan Frakes. It was titled Star Trek: Insurrection. Naturally, I was enthusiastic, I'd watched the previous eight pictures over and over and over again. And I guess on some level I enjoyed this picture; I liked Picard's speeches and seeing the characters on the big screen.

Four years pass. The early 2000s. 2002 came, a year I'd anxiously been waiting for on some level. After all, this was the first time - ever - that a Star Wars and a Star Trek film were being released the same year. The winner of that epic conflict was, of course, The Lord of the Rings, but I didn't know that at the time. I went into the cinemas to see a film directed by Stuart Baird, a man I'd never heard of before and seldom since (though I believe he edited Casino Royale.) And I enjoyed seeing the characters on the big screen. I was shocked but not moved by Data's death, which surprised me since he'd been one of my favourite characters since, well, forever.

So, assuming I bother, Abrams' directorial effort will be the third Star Trek picture I see on the silver screen.

My fondest memory would be about Generations. Not because it was really awesome or anything, but because I had won two tickets to the midnight premiere, which also included a showing of ALL other movies before the actual event. Talk about Trek overload, but it was just awesome to finally see all movies on the big screen and then share it with fans. Since then I've made it a point to catch the first showing of each subsequent one and talk about declining enthusiasm after FC.

I'm interested - albeit more than envious - in hearing about all these experiences of the older fans. I love hearing what audience reactions there were at certain parts, etc.

Alas, I only seen INS and NEM in the cinema on opening night. The only thing that struck me was how bare it was in there considering it was only at the beginning of its run, and the lack of publicity for those films over here.

I found INS to be pretty good in the cinema, but my mother thought it was a glorified TV episode. How smart she was!

NEM was interesting to watch, but felt sickened afterwards. I knew Trek as I knew it, was dead.

The way a Star Trek film holds up on repeat viewings, decides the great Trek films from the rest of them.

How I'd have loved to have seen the earlier films in the cinema :(

Before being ST: TMP, I remember feeling amazed that I was seeing anything from Star Trek again. That was in the olden days when, once a show is cancelled, that's it. I went to see it with my dad. Yes, we were bored. ;)

When FC came out, the computer game company I was working for rented out a local theater so we could all see it the day before the official launch. That was fun, even though I really was never much of a TNG fan and hardly knew what the Borg were. (One of my co-workers, who was originally from Sweden, was even more confused - Borg means "fort" or something in Swedish.)

I saw Insurrection with a bunch of friends. We were laughing our asses off when Our Heroes decided to go hide in some caves...of course the damn caves are going to collapse on them. Haven't they figured that out yet? The whole audience was hooting and throwing popcorn. That was a pretty rowdy crowd, so the fact that the movie stank wasn't as obvious immediately - it was still a lot of fun.

The only reason I saw Nemesis was so I could join the general bashing party here. Data's death fell flat for me since the minute his replacement, B4, came onscreen it was obvious that Data was going to die. And what a cheap death - to trot out his replacement beforehand! His death wasn't moving, it was infuriating and sickening. Thank GOD that the crass, cheap Berman era is over.

Some guy in the seat in front of me was loudly snoring through Nemesis. In retrospect, I can't say I blame him.

I guess I'm considered an old fart now. I saw most of them at the theaters. My first ever indoor theater experience (not drive-in) was STAR WARS with my best friend.

ST:TMP - I was a college freshman when the first movie came out. My dorm-mate worked at the local cinema as projectionist so I got in for free. It was really cool to see everything on the BIG screen for the first time... I kept trying to commit every detail to memory. I saw it twice that night & remember that I dozed off during round 2 of the "lets show the fans what Enterprise looks like..."

ST:TWOK - WOW! They finally did an ACTION movie for ST fans! I saw it with my best friend/boyfriend who was also a Star Wars/ST fan. We whispered in hushed tones our critiques & yelled with everyone else at the right parts. I remember how quiet it got when Spock died. We waited for soooo long for the next movie to solve the puzzle... for a year or two we had heard that Nimoy was done with ST movies & wouldn't be in...

ST:TSFS - So many questions answered! I saw it with my same BF. We had waited sooo long for this movie and we were not disappointed! My bf liked making out during movies... trying not to let anyone see that we were gay, but making our "stand" in public, but not at the ST movies... we were glued to the screen.

ST:TVH - Still my all-time favorite movie. I saw it with several friends... even my brother who thinks sci-fi is stupid.. went and enjoyed it. That's what I remember most about TVH, even people who normally didn't like sci-fi enjoyed this one!

ST:TFF - What can I say? We were all disappointed, but some good came out of it. I was at a convention with my friend not long after the movie bombed (she even wore a costume... I was so embarassed to be seen with her). There I met George Takei (only took about 1 minute for the GAYDAR to go into Red Alert mode). When I mentioned that I was in marketing George grilled me for about an hour while he signed autographs. "what do you think Paramount did wrong? how can we fix the franchise? is it damaged beyond repair?" etc., etc. We hit it off well and stayed in contact after the convention. Eventually he introduced me to Majel B. Roddenerry who I adore to this day. To make a way-too-long story short, eventually she championed my series idea to the studios... they went with that crappy DS9 idea over ours. So I have no love for Paramount, Berman, et. al.

ST:TUC - I enjoyed this movie. Although I can't really say why. It was just enjoyable.

ST:GEN - Didn't see it at the theaters. Only on VHS (yeah in the olden days ;-) ).

ST:FC - To me it was the only other movie that was a hit outside of Trekdom. I saw it at the premiere, thanks to my mentor and friend throughout the Paramount ordeal. I didn't have to go see it alone, the second and third times, because a lot of people wanted to see it. It was the last one I saw at a theater. The others I saw on DVD.

ST:XI - I am looking forward to seeing this movie in the theater. Probably on opening night.

First Contact was my first Trek movie experience in the theatre. I was 9 at the time and I remember loving every minute of it.

I agree with some of the previous posters, this is a great thread!:techman:

Let's see...

I was too young and missed TMP and TWOK (argh!) on the big screen so my first movie memory was getting to see TSFS at a now long gone theater that used to be under the street in the middle of the city where I live. It was a huge, cavernous (at least to me) theater - I remember the cool looking "new" klingon ship and being sad when the Enterprise blew up. Somehow, though, Spock being surrounded by all of his friends made it ok and when the words '...And the Adventure Continues...' popped up I remember looking up at my dad in excitement and asking " Neat does that mean there will be ANOTHER one?!?!" Awesome. I also remember a few days later my dad asking me if I could draw him a picture of "that new klingon ship" because he really liked it too.

TVH - I vaguely remember wondering how they were going to do this with no Enterprise...actually got the redneck portion of the extended family into the theater to see this as it was Thanksgiving and we were visiting with them. None of them cared about Trek and at the end, when they reveal the new Enterprise, my cousin jumped up and was high-fiving me and was really excited. I still get goose bumps to this day when thinking about that scene and my cousin's reaction.

TFF - Got to spend the night with my best friend at his house the night before this came out...he had MTV and I didn't so that was a bonus  So stayed up late and talked about what the new movie was going to be like and got up the next morning and saw the first showing...I remember being slightly disappointed it wasn't as good as all the others but still I was getting to hang out all day and watch Star Trek so it was all good back then. After the movie, my friend and I walked to the local comic shop and bought a bunch of comics, including the Star Trek V comics adaption and revisited all the scenes we had just watched. Later on that summer another theater near me had Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade paired with Star Trek V as a double feature and my whole family went - my first and only double feature ever! Great fun!

TUC - I knew this was the last one for the TOS crew so I loved and hated to see this one come. Loved it....went with my brother and father and at the end when Sulu says "Target that explosion and fire" the WHOLE THEATER stood up and clapped and cheered, then sat back quick to finish watching the end of the movie. It was an exciting memory. I went out that day and bought the soundtrack on cassette tape.

GEN - saw this with all my friends...we took up a whole row...theater crowd was crazy and excited. I got choked up at Kirk's death and I remember the theater being silent during that scene. I won a bet with my girlfriend at the time and she had to go see it with me...she still didn't "get it" after the movie was over...we broke up 2 years later - :rommie:

FC - I was extremely excited about this movie...saw all the teasers and recorded one off of Ent Tonight and watched it over and over. I also remember reading a "leaked" script that ended up being a fake where Picard commanded a new ship called the Admiral Kirk - ha! Theater was packed again and I remember there was a HUGE t-shirt sale going on inside the theater where there must have been at least 30 different Star Trek shirts for sale including all the new FC ones... I was amazed at all the stuff...the next day in our town, William Shatner was at a convention and I got to meet him for the second time that year!!!! A pretty good weekend if I do say so myself

INS - saw it, enjoyed it but I was sad there weren't more DS9 references as promised....from reading early script references I thought it might end up being a darker film but it wasn't but that was ok. Not enough ship action when there was plenty of opportunity...I remember there being snippets of dialogue from the movie being played on local morning radio that day to promote the film...the last time I remember that happening.

NEM - took the day off from work...theater was empty, but my family was with me again. THere was a WALL SIZE Nemesis poster in the theater lobby that I thought was awesome. I liked the movie and still don't know why it got bashed so badly. Oh well.

I can't wait to make some new memories when the new film comes. It's about time Star Trek returns to Summer!!!

Great thread! I've got memories of seeing most of them in theatres, starting with TMP with my Dad when I was seven (I fell asleep!)

One of my favorites was in Generations, with a packed theater (it was sold out, IIRC), and at the moment when we first see Kirk chopping wood, some guy yelled "Kirk kicks Picard's ass!" and almost the entire theater burst into cheering and applause.

I also remember seeing First Contact and bringing this girl who I had just started dating, and she was completely clueless about Star Trek. Well, she LOVED the movie, but when it was over she asked "wait, where were Kirk and Dr. Spock?" She had assumed they'd be in it and kept waiting for them to show up. So had to explain TNG vs TOS on the drive home (and break the news that Kirk was dead).

A very sad memory was when I went to see Nemesis on opening night (dragged my wife with me, even) and the theater was almost empty. And then the movie sucked, of course. When it was over, the seven or eight of us who were in the theater basically slunk out, embarrased to be seen coming out of the theater. It was a real low point in the history of the Trek franchise.

As I mentioned in the link off my earlier post, all the other ST films had had huge gala "event' premieres and lots of publicity, usually involving the participation of local fan clubs. Fandom as a whole (and Paramount Publicity) had seemingly abandoned "Nemesis" long before it began. Several Australian ST organizations had already folded after "Insurrection", so no one organized group ticketing or had costumed events, at least that i'd been able to discover. none of my old ST friends had any interest in seeing the film so I rolled up to my local cinema on opening night (with one work colleague) and there were no queues, no excitement, no patrons-on-seats.

Sad.

My Star Trek movie memories start with The Undiscovered Country. Then I saw Generations, following First Contact. I skipped Insurrection, for the fact of the odd-numbered curse Trek films seem to have. My last film was Nemesis. I was a bit young and never really saw any Star Trek films prior to The Undiscovered Country. To tell you the truth, I think my first interest in Star Trek was in the late 80s when Nickelodeon showed reruns of TOS.

I remember just getting into Star Trek in the mid-90s, and taking friends and relatives one-by-one to see First Contact. I must have seen it at least nine times myself.

My favourite memory is seeing a Trek film for the first time with fans - Insurrection. They laughed at all the right moments, cheered several lines and applauded at the end. Going to see a normal screening, in a near-empty cinema, with one person who snored loudly for a good deal of it, was a sobering experience.

I have seen all of them since TSFS and I remember telling my dad, I was maybe 10 at the time, that they couldn't destroy the enterprise. Well of course they did and we both started guessing what ship they would get next. My dad was set on Kirk and Company getting the Excelsior (sp?). I was nearly in tears when I saw Kirk say, "My friends, we've come home."

The coolest things happened when I saw GEN and FC in the movie theater. While on my second or third viewing of GEN, right as Kirk tells the cameraman "Turn that damn thing off!!", the power went out at the movie theater because of a small fire. We all had to leave the theater and they gave us coupons to come back later and see the show. Which I did of course, and I still laugh when the movie gets to that spot.

For FC me and bunch of buddies from Ricks College went and got great seats right in the middle of the theater. As we were waiting for the movie to start we saw a lady come in wearing a Next Generation uniform. Now, I mean no disrespect to anybody that wears them, but all of us had never seen that before. Then I noticed it was my next door neighbor that was with this gal. So we see the movie and loved it and after I get home I happened to bump into my neighbor. I asked about the gal with the uniform and he did seem a bit embarrassed, but he went on to say what was while that might have been embarrassing the fact that we missed on on his friend having a phaser and was pointing it to the screen shooting the borg was even more embarrassing. :wtf:

The other two movies were not much to see but it was good seeing the cast on screen. I look forward to seeing Trek XI and many others...

I have a few great memories.

First, when I went to see the fifth movie, Final Frontier, Mom covered her eyes when Kirk fell off the mountain. She hates heights! And I remember laughing so hard at McCoy!

I went to see the sixth movie with a friend of mine in '92 and had such a crush on Shatner it was unbelievable. :) I remember crying at the end of the movie with the autographs..that was amazing.

The funniest memory: Was waiting in line to see Generations when it came out. There was this guy who was making funny jokes about some of the characters..he said something like: "look there! Spock is blushing!" I can't remember what he was referring to at the time but it sure was damned funny!

That's so funny! I would have been like: OMG! Is Kirk really in here?!?! DAMN! :) :guffaw:! How hilarious!

I remember jumping a bit when the Borg thingie came out of Captain Picard's face in FC, but it's nowhere near as good as that!
